EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The EMSC is in charge of producing the Euro-Med Bulletin. Over the years, its content has greatly improved with an increasing number of data contributors. For the EMB 1998, 51 networks have provided data while for the year 2009, we have collected information from 78 institutes. Thanks to those efforts, the EMB has become a reference catalogue of the seismicity for the Euro-Med region. The available EMB now covers the period from 1998 to the beginning of 2009, corresponding to more than 65,000 tectonic events of magnitude larger than 3. Last year was crucial for the Euro-Med Bulletin with major changes in its production procedures. The first evolution concerns the velocity model as we have switched from Jeffreys Bullen global velocity associated to local velocity models towards the IASPEI recommended ak135. It has been adopted for the production of the EMB 2008 onward. Secondly, the magnitude threshold, previously set at 3.0, has been removed, as requested by the EMSC members. Consequently, the number of events included in the EMB has been multiplied by more than three, however, without a significant increase of inaccurate phase association. The global magnitude completeness does not display large improvement by adding low magnitude as large regional discrepancies are observed. Back processing of the previous EMB years is in progress. Low magnitude events have been included in the 2007 EMB and new location using ak135 for the full period will be available in the spring Finally, we have investigated how to improve the event type identification. While crucial to provide an accurate image of the seismicity, the task is not easy as various procedures are followed by our contributors. By communicating with the network operators, we have improved the collection of event type information, reflected by 21 contributors for 2008 (against 8 for 1998) providing these information. We have also set up a review procedure allowing the contributors to check and modify event type information (along with any other information) before entering the production phase. Already 26 networks perform these important checks. In terms of data access, a new page of the EMSC web site has been defined since July, 2010 to provide easier and detailed information on the Euro-Med Bulletin. More specifically dedicated to scientists, the EMB has proven to be also attractive for a more general public, such as scholars, interested in the seismicity of a given region. They can now access a simplified version of the catalogue. Thanks to this new web page, the number of connections has almost doubled in six months will also be an important year where the updated EMB will be available. Our main goal is to reduce the gap in production in collaboration with our contributors. We are also implementing the search and publication of authoritative locations provided by the contributors as decided in the general assembly. Finally, the EMSC would like to thank all the operating networks that participate to the production of the Euro-Med Bulletin. 3/25

I INTRODUCTION The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), hosted by the LDG (Laboratoire de Détection et de Géophysique, Bruyères-le-Châtel, France), is a non-profit scientific international NGO which provides rapid earthquake information in coordination with the national seismological institutes in the Euro-Med region. Currently, 84 seismological institutes are members from 55 countries spanning over the whole Euro-Med region. The main scientific activities of the EMSC are the real time information services and the production of the Euro-Med Bulletin. The Euro-Med Bulletin is a seismological product developed during the EPSI project (2002). It is based on the comprehensive collection of bulletins and arrivals provided by networks operating in the region. By merging data from 78 contributing networks and by computing locations in a homogeneous way, the EMB provides a reference catalogue of the seismicity since This report presents the status of the 2010 bulletin activities in terms of data received, published bulletin. It also presents the latest developments concerning the velocity model used and the integration of low magnitude event, along with the new EMSC web page, online since July 2010, which provides clearer information for the public. 7/25

II STATUS OF THE BULLETIN We present in this paragraph the data contribution collected by the EMSC and the published events in the Euro-Med Bulletin. II.1 Data contribution II.1.1 Data collection Since the beginning of the production of the Euro-Med Bulletin, the data provided by the operating networks of the region has steadily increased (Figure 1). The number of contributing networks is reaching a plateau as the data collection is now comprehensive. For the year 2009, data contributions from two networks are missing (SNSN and SPGM). The weekly content of the local bulletin database is available online Meanwhile, the content of the contribution has evolved. More networks compute and provide locations, reaching 85% of the contributions in Thanks to discussion with the data contributors, we now collect a significantly higher amount of event type information. In 2008 and 2009, one third of the networks provide information on non tectonic events, against only one tenth in nb of contributing networks Contributors Origin Group Amplitude Event type Data contribution year Figure 1: Evolution of the data contribution to the Euro-Med Bulletin The steadily increasing number of contributors providing locations and the broader magnitude range of events collected is leading to a continuously growing number of origins in the EMSC database (Figure 2). The high number in 2009 is also related to the L Aquila event and its replicas, with about 18,000 locations reported in the main shock vicinity. 9/25

After this detailed check, we have set up a routine search for duplicated events before producing the Euro- Med Bulletin. This procedure allows us to identify possible problems and eases the following production step. 11/25
For a couple of years an additional review procedure is in place. It allows the contributors to check and update their data before starting the Bulletin production by sending monthly bulletins by . This procedure has proven to be useful: - To ensure that a maximum of data is available for the computation of the Euro-Med bulletin - To identify missing or erroneous data which helps to upgrade the data parsers - To identify known explosions which were previously identified as earthquake - To verify station information (new feature in 2010) This procedure has proven to be useful with 26 networks providing valuable updates particularly for event type modification. Over the years, 2,743 stations were reported to the EMSC, but with variation in time, the maximum number of stations in a single year being 2,139 (in 2009). In 2010, we reviewed in details the station book in order to identify remaining non registered stations or wrongly located stations. More than a hundred stations have been updated. Local codes have been mapped into international codes. Furthermore, this work showed to be useful for the back processing of the past EMB data Indeed, a station reporting in 1998 could be present at that time in the EMSC station book with accurate location but with a local code while it could well not be registered to the International Registry maintained by the ISC and the NEIC Station contribution 2000 nb of contributing stations year Figure 3: Evolution since 1998 of the number of stations in the Euro-Med region provided by the contributing networks 12/25
Figure 4: Distribution of the stations used in the Euro-Med Bulletin since Stations in blue are available since Stations in green have started to be reported to the EMSC afterwards. II.2 Euro-Med Bulletin II.2.1 General information The broad collection of data contributions to the Euro-Med bulletin provides a comprehensive image of the regional seismicity. The Euro-Med bulletin is currently available and covers the period from January, 1998 to December, 2008 (Figure 5). The EMB for the year 2009 is now in production and should be available in the first half of The EMSC has introduced in 2010 two major evolutions in its Bulletin: the computation of earthquakes hypocentres using the ak135 velocity model and the removal of the magnitude threshold previously set at M>3.0. These new features have been applied for the Bulletin production of 2008 onward and reprocessing of the full period is in progress. To provide coherent information, we present here statistics and results for events of magnitude larger than 3. Since 1998, the number of events of magnitude larger than 3 has regularly increased (Figure 6). A total of 76,000 events are included in the EMB. For the year 2008, a large amount of events is related to the earthquake sequences in Greece in January-February and June-July. Activity in the Aegean Sea and Iran has also an impact on the EMB content in Three classes of location are published in the EMB: - Associated event: when an event is recorded by several networks. In this case, an EMSC location computed. - Reported event: if the event is recorded by a single but close network. In this case, the network location is reported. 13/25
- Deprecated event: if the event is recorded by a distant network or if the number of recording stations is lower than 4. In this case, the network location is reported. Figure 5: Natural seismicity in the Euro-Med region for the period as computed in the EMB for events of magnitude larger than 3. On average, phase association is possible for 53% of the events. For the year 2008, the number of deprecated events has decreased for the first time thanks to the improvement of the collected data. number of events Evolution of M>3.0 events Total Associated events Reported events Deprecated events year Figure 6: Content of the EMB since /25
II.2.2 Azimuthal coverage Thanks to extensive data contributions, the seismicity imaged in the EMB displays a good azimuthal coverage over the whole region. Figure 7 shows the azimuthal coverage for associated events of magnitude larger than 3. High resolution is observed for most of the Euro-Med region although lower azimuthal gap is obtained at the outskirt of the area and at the coasts (e.g. West of Gibraltar and Off the Coast of Portugal). In the North of the Red Sea, lower resolution is also obtained and in the Mediterranean Sea between Sicily and Lybia. Figure 7: Azimuthal gap of associated events with magnitude larger than 3. Almost 70% of the events of magnitude larger than 3 were located with an azimuthal gap lower than 160 and about 60% of the events display a gap lower than 120 (Figure 8). Since 1998, the overall azimuthal gap has significantly improved. 15/25
Figure 8: Evolution of the azimuthal gap since 1998 for associated events of magnitude larger than 3. In red is shown the average value over 11 years. II.2.3 Non tectonic activity To provide an accurate image of the seismicity useful for seismic hazard assessment, it is crucial to properly identify the different type of events. Event type identification relies on the information provided by the local networks. However, data policies can be very different. Last year, the EMSC has contacted the network operators in order to have an image of the current status of their discrimination policy, aiming to discuss and to improve the event identification. Thanks to this survey, several networks have taken into account this important issue and now include the event type information in their contribution (cf Figure 1), in particular for 2008 data onward. We have gathered discrimination procedures and information available on non tectonic events from the EMSC contributors (Table 2). Among the 59 answers received, 28 networks declare to remove completely or partially non tectonic events, which can lead to inaccurate event labelling if data are provided by neighbouring countries. Moreover, 12 networks do not apply any filtering procedure which means that labelling relies solely on neighbouring countries information. Table 2: Discrimination procedures collected from the network operators. In addition, we collected the location of mining areas. Currently, 7 networks have provided listings which can be fully available or with restricted access from the following countries: Georgia, Kazakhstan, Turkey, France (restricted), Albania, Russia, Yemen Moreover, quarry locations have been collected from 12 countries: Tunisia, Lithuania, Armenia, Turkey, Spain, Poland, Sweden, Norway, Russia, Finland (Geological Survey of Finland), Israel/Jordan. 16/25
Collecting these information is useful to scan bulletin events and to discard the related explosions using specific criteria (radius, time, magnitude) to flag possible explosion and blast. We have performed simple cluster representation of events around quarries showing promising results. Figure 9 shows that the amount of non tectonic events of magnitude larger than 3 increases over the years, reflecting a better identification and reporting of these information by the operating networks. The large values in 2006 and 2007 are mainly due to a significant amount of induced events reported by the Swedish network. 7 Non tectonic events of M>3 in the EMB 6 % of the total number of events year Figure 9: Evolution of the number of non tectonic events of magnitude larger than 3 in the EMB since Figure 10 shows the distribution of non tectonic events in the EMB , period for which no magnitude threshold is applied. Large regional variations are observed, with clusters in Poland and Czech Republic, Scandinavia, Spain, the Red Sea and Kazakhstan. This regional discrepancy shows the importance of collecting accurate event type information. The Gutenberg Richter distribution shows a magnitude completeness of 1 for non tectonic events (Figure 11) related to the good detection threshold of the operating networks which discriminate non tectonic seismicity. It is a challenge to harmonize event type information practice among the Euro-Med seismological networks and this process will continue in the coming years, possibly by setting up a working group within IASPEI. 17/25
Figure 10: Distribution of non tectonic events in the Euro-Med Bulletin in 2007 and 2008 for all magnitude. Figure 11: Magnitude distribution of non tectonic events in the Euro-Med Bulletin over two years. The event of magnitude 5 occurred in Kazakhstan. 18/25
III EVOLUTION Last year, we introduced two major changes to the production of the EMB: The ak135 velocity model is now used for all phases and at all distances, in agreement with the IASPEI recommendations. The currently available EMB98-07 is based on the Jeffrey Bullen global velocity model associated with local velocity models. This period is being reprocessed to use ak135 and should be available in the spring The magnitude threshold, previously set at 3.0, has been completely removed. The magnitude content of the Euro-Med Bulletin now reflects the full range of data contributions provided by the local networks. III.1 Impact of removing the magnitude threshold The computation of the Euro-Med Bulletin for all magnitude leads to a striking increase of the number of events included in the Bulletin, with an average number of events per day rising from 60 to more than 200 (Figure 12). However, adding low magnitude events has no impact on the EMB magnitude completeness as shown by Figure 13. This is explained by the fact that each network uses different magnitude cut-off in their contribution to the EMSC. For example, the Icelandic network provides events of magnitude larger than 3.5, whereas in Nordic countries, Slovenia or Spain, events of magnitude lower than one are reported (Figure 14). Number of events in the EMB database number year Figure 12: Evolution of the number of events in the Euro-Med Bulletin (for all magnitude). Figure 13: Magnitude distribution of events before (red) and after (black) adding low magnitude events in the Euro-Med Bulletin for /25
Figure 14: Magnitude distribution of data collected from Spain (red) and Turkey (black) in III.2 Impact of using ak135 The EMB for the year 2008 onward is computed using the global velocity model ak135, as recommended by IASPEI. The back processing of the period is in progress. A comparison of the Jeffreys Bullen locations with the ak135 locations will be the subject of a report in the spring An important issue that we encountered while reprocessing the data was station coordinates. For the year 1998, the station book used at the EMSC was not fully compatible with the International Registry and not all the stations it contained were not and have never been registered or have been registered later on with an alternative code. Approximately 50 station codes have been updated in 2010 in collaboration with the ISC, the NEIC and the local networks. IV WEB AND DATA ACCESS IV.1 The new EMB page In order to improve the clarity of the information published by the EMSC, a new web site has been online since July, A new version of the Euro-Med Bulletin page has then been developed The goal is to provide clearer information for the scientists and easier access to the data by and online. Additionally, we have tried to provide access to seismic catalogue which are useful for the general public interested in making maps or collecting simple lists of events. Only the natural seismicity in the Euro-Med region is available online. Non tectonic events are discarded on the web and can be requested to the EMSC directly. Deprecated events are also discarded as their occurrence is doubtful. 20/25
Figure 15: New page dedicated to the Euro-Med Bulletin. On this new page, users can access the catalogue of seismicity online and display it on Google map (Figure 16). Figure 16a: View of the catalogue accessible online Figure 16b: Example of the Google Map provided with the catalogue 21/25
IV.2 Web users To measure the traffic on the Euro-Med Bulletin page, we use the statistics provided by Google Analytics. The traffic on this specific page is, of course, much lower than on the real time information pages. On average, 25 unique visitors reach this page per day (Figure 17). Some interesting picks are observed on the traffic and could be identified. The first corresponds to the ESC 2010 conference which finished on the 9 th of September and a second is related to the Serbian earthquake of November, 3 rd (magnitude 5.4). People interested by this event do search additional information on the EMSC web site for about one week and access the Euro-Med Bulletin pages. Figure 18 also shows that this event has dragged a significant amount of visitors with 20% of the visitors over six months originating from Serbia. Furthermore, a significant amount of users are connecting from Italy and Romania. Overall, users from 52 countries have visited the EMB web page over the last six months. Figure 17: Daily number of unique visitors on the Euro-Med Bulletin web page since July Figure 18: Origin of the EMB web page users over a period of six months (July 2010-January 2011). V DATA DISTRIBUTION AND REQUEST The Euro-Med bulletin is automatically provided to the ISC (International Seismological Centre) as soon as a monthly period is available. In addition, all the data are available online, i.e. collected local data and published Euro-Med Bulletin, both in GSE format. Redistribution or uses for commercial purposes are prohibited, following a decision made by the EMSC general assembly in Furthermore and following the general assembly decision, full access to the data is now given to all users upon simple registration. 22/25
V.1 Local bulletin request Since 2005, the local bulletins are available on the EMSC web site and by autodrm. In total, 78 users are registered to collect data from 30 countries. More than 1,600 requests have been performed to retrieve about 32,000 days of data. local bulletins requested nb of requests nb of days requested year 0 Figure 19: Local bulletins requested since V.2 EMB request The Euro-Med Bulletin is also accessible online and by . Currently 36 users from 21 countries have requested data, either full bulletins (origins and phases) or catalogues. By implementing a new web page, the visibility of the EMB has increased and provides easier access to the data as reflected by the larger amount of data downloaded in EMB data requested number of events year Figure 20: Euro-Med Bulletins requested since /25
VI CONCLUSIONS AND PERSPECTIVES The Euro-Med Bulletin has gathered an increasing number of data contributions. Its content and computation have been improved leading to a comprehensive picture of the seismicity. It now provides data for the full magnitude range using ak 135. In 2011, our goals are the following: Faster production The Euro-Med Bulletin provides now a comprehensive picture of the seismicity of the region. The next step is now to significantly decrease the delay of production. To achieve this goal, the data collection has to be improved, by collecting more rapidly the contributions. This will only be possible in collaboration with the operating networks and by setting up reliable and automatic data exchange. Authoritative location identification The Authoritative location procedure has been implemented to the Real Time Services following the decision of the general assembly. A similar scheme is in implementation to scan the local bulletins and extract authoritative locations. Identifying those locations will provide a useful tool to assess the quality of the Euro-Med Bulletin and how earthquake location may vary. Back processing in ak135 In spring 2011, the Euro-Med Bulletin will be fully available using the global velocity model ak135 for the period Enriching the EMB with low magnitude events for the full period is a significant work. As mentioned in the General Assembly and in paragraph III-1, adding low magnitude events does not greatly improved the magnitude completeness due to large regional variations. Therefore, adding low magnitude events in the currently available EMB is not a priority. 24/25
