2 The LNEG mission LNEG, the Portuguese National Institution for Energy and Geology, is a State Laboratory attached to the Ministry for Economy and Innovation, which carries out advanced R&D work. The LNEG mission is to promote technological innovation in the fields of energy and geology focused on science and technology, with the overriding objective of raising company competitiveness within a framework of sustainable economic progress. LNEG also acts as a consultant for public policies in these domains. LNEG takes up the role of an interface between results generated by R&D programmes and their effective technological integration into the private sector - e.g. mineral exploration.
