1 activities: Fourth Grade UNIT CONTENT STANDARD ACTIVITY NAME DESCRIPTION WEEK #1 9/13-9/17 WEEK #2 9/27-10/1 Investigation & experimentatio n 6.c: Formulate and justify predictions based on causeand-effect relationships. Intro + Cardboard Flyers Limits to Growth Introduce the classroom & lab structure, go over lab safety rules; Have students build cardboard flyers to show how air can help things move (along with Frisbee work in PE) Students fill 3 cups with soil and add a different number of lima bean seeds into each cup & measure height of the seedlings in the coming weeks. WEEK #3 10/4-10/8 Life Support Students start a non-living terrarium with gravel, soil, rocks, & water WEEK #4 10/11-10/15 Right at home Students add living things to the terrariums started the previous week. Item include grass, moss, earthworms, crickets WEEK #5 11/1-11/5 Right at home Students add living things to the terrariums started the previous week. Item include grass, apple slices, earthworms

2 WEEK #6 11/15-11/19 WEEK #7 11/29-12/3 Finish terrariums Growing Mold Students will disassemble their terrariums carefully placing the earthworms in the garden. Students will grow mold on bread in a sealed plastic baggie with 10 drops of water in each, at three different temperatures to see which conditions grow the most mold. WEEK #8 12/6-12/10 3.d: Students know that most microorganisms do not cause disease and that many are beneficial. Bacteria Grows Students learn about the difference between bacterial and cells, and scrape surfaces around the room to grow bacteria in a Petri dish over agar. WEEK #9 1/3-1/7 WEEK #10 1/10-1/14 6.d: Conduct multiple trials to test a prediction and draw conclusions about the relationships between predictions and results. 6.a: Differentiate observation from inference (interpretation) and know scientists explanations come partly from what they observe and partly from how they interpret their observations. Check Mold & Bacteria results Looking at Cells Students will examine the results of their mold-growing experiment as well as their bacteria scrape experiment. Students will look through microscopes at skin cells, after learning some background information about plant vs. animal cells vs. bacteria.

3 WEEK #11 1/24-1/28 WEEK #12 1/31-2/4 WEEK #13 2/7-2/11 WEEK #14 2/28-3/4 Earth Earth Earth Earth 4.a: Students know how to differentiate among igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks by referring to their properties and methods of formation (the rock cycle). Rocks & the Rock Cycle Erupting Volcano Lava in a Cup Landslide Model Students will watch a BrainPop video of rocks then examine different types of rocks using hand lenses and streak plates. Students will create their own volcanoes with modeling clay and plastic cups, and create an eruption with baking soda, food coloring, dish soap, and vinegar. Students will create lava-like fluid in a cup using water with food coloring in it, layering vegetable oil on top, and then dropping in salt to see its motion within the water (simulates lava). Students will create a sample of earth with pebbles, dirt, and sand in an open milk carton, and then add water to create a landslide. They will measure the amount of runoff with each landslide at different heights.

4 WEEK #15 3/14-3/18 1.e: Students know electrically charged objects attract or repel each other Build a Charge Students will begin to learn about electricity by rubbing balloons with wool cloth to create a charge and see how they react to each other, a stream of water, etc WEEK #16 3/21-3/25 No TLP, IB training WEEK #17 3/28-4/1 1.a: Students know how to design and build simple series and parallel circuits by using components such as wires, batteries, and bulbs. Build Circuits Students will use a battery, battery, holder, wires, and small light bulbs to create various types of circuits to light the bulbs. WEEK #18 4/18-4/22 Earth Day Planting Seeds Each student will plant seeds in their own containers to take home and care for. WEEK #19 4/25-4/29 1.f: Students know that magnets have two poles (north and south) and that like poles repel each other while unlike poles attract each other. Magnetism & Magnetic Poles Students will use bar magnets to show how north and south poles of magnets attract/repel each other, then create a charge on a sewing needle through a foam ball in a bowl of water. WEEK #20 5/2-5/6 1.c: Students know electric currents produce magnetic fields and know how to build a simple electromagnet. Electro- Magnetism Students will use wires, batteries, and a nail to create a magnetic field on the nail that can attract paper clips.

5 WEEK #21 5/23-5/27 1.e: Students know electrically charged objects attract or repel each other. Rice Crispy Lab Students will use plexiglass and wool cloth to make rice crispy cereal jump. WEEK #22 6/6-6/10 Last day of science! Q & A Students will be able to ask any science related questions they might have and summarize science for the year.
