1 PhD course in qualitative methods for Human geographers 7,5 p, Uppsala, Lund, Malmö Spring Registration: 15th November 2017 to Carina Listerborn (carina.listerborn@mah.se) Organisers: Irene Molina (main organiser), Aida Aragao Lagergren, Uppsala University, Anders Lund Hansen, Lund University & Carina Listerborn, Malmö University Aim of the course The course aims to provide a detailed presentation of current qualitative methods, each within its correspondent theoretical frame. The PhD students will have the opportunity of practicing with the different techniques and methods discussed during the course, and to relate to the whole process of research, i.e. from the selection of the method/s in relation to the question/s formulated for the research, to the treatment of the research information and the presentation of the results. A special focus will be put on ethnographic methods and the geographies of everyday life. Ethic aspects are going to be considered during all the blocks of the course. Active participation will be crucial for the structure of the course. The Contents of the Course The course starts with an introduction to qualitative methods and methodologies including the theoretical foundations for each kind of method particularly referring to the discipline of Human Geography. Afterwards the course is going to be structured in seminars in which the discussion of the papers provided by the participants as well as the literature for each section will be the basic components. Both national and international guests are going to participate with lectures and discussions. In all lectures and seminars, the whole process of research and associated reflections and decision making, will be addressed. The question why selecting each particular method, the way/s of collecting the data, the organisation and the analysis of the data, the presentation of the results, as well as ethical considerations attached to the chosen methods are important aspects contained in the course. A collected data base can consist on both written and visual or audio visual representations, which means that both texts (daybooks, interviews, articles, books, etc.), pictures, photos, maps, films and sound will be discussed as research material in the course. Even live material such as the environment that surround us and the ways in which people perceive it and each other in public and private spaces can be considered as researchable. The course is organised in three blocks, one at each university. 2 Entry Requirements The participant must be admitted to the PhD program in a university department. The participant will send an abstract of her/his project to carina.listerborn@mah.se by the 15 th of November 2017, together with the application to the course. Decision of participation will be announced by the 10 th of December The accepted participant will send a document of 8 10 pages to the administrators explaining the dissertation plan with emphasis on methodological issues, by the 28 th of January Examination and evaluation Participation in all blocks is required. A course PM will be delivered at the end of the course, at latest the 30 th of April A course evaluation will be conducted verbally at the last session of the course. The organisers will deliver an evaluation document to the National Courses administration.
