1 The iakhar Social etwork and Health Project (2016) Codebook for the Reponse/Alterclaim files (sections concerning alters and alter information) 2 nd Panel survey 15 th February 2017 Contact : jsandber@ .gwu.edu
2 This document describes the questions and variables found in the first three parts of the iakhar Social etworks and Health project's first pilot survey (2014). Part I: Part II: Part III: ame generators (asking for names of specific individuals) ame identifiers (asking for information used by the algorithm to identify names in the surveillance system) ame interpreters (asking about information concerning these individuals)
3 Part I : ame generators In this first part, the name of alters belonging to each name generator were collected. Variables prenom1_alter and nom_alter recorded the full names of each alter. The variable gn_key recorded the name generators in which each alter was listed, but was recorded into multiple dummy variables presented bellow (Gx). The name generators were divided into three sections : 1-People to whom you are the closest ( ) 2-The people that you give help to or that give you help (7-8-9) 3-The people with whom you spend time ( ) Before starting, the interviewers were instructed to briefly present the different sections to the respondents so that they could to some extent structure their alters in advance and cite the categories that best fit them. Alters could still be named across multiple generators. The name generators 2, 11 and 14 were deleted from the final instrument. Variable name: G1 Could you give me the name of the people that are closest to you (in your heart). This could be anyone including your parents, friends, fellow students, colleagues at work or neighbors. 11 Part II. ame Identifiers In this part of the interview, information concerning each unique alter was collected to be used by the identification algorithm. In the first panel, the algorithm was simultaneously looking for a match. Information on sex, place of living and name of compound head were asked for every alter. In this second panel, the algorithm was turned off and all information was collected for every alter that once lived in the HDSS area and is identifiable in the database.
