Conference Topics and History The increasing ability of scientists to manipulate the matter virtually atom by atom, to create and use structures, devices and systems that have unique physical and chemical properties and functions because of their small size in a nanometer scale (1-100 nm range) can be expected to have a significant impact on sustainable development and an enormous potential for industry and technology, social, economic and environmental benefits. Nanostructured materials a state of matter in between molecules and bulk structures include ultrafine microstructures (atomic clusters, layered films, filamentary structures and bulk nanostructured materials) having an average phase or grain size less than 100 nm. Functional materials are nanomaterials having essential functional properties originate mainly from small size, surface structure, large surface area and high surface to volume ratio, chemical composition, shape, solubility and aggregation, which are useful in processes such as adsorption, ion-conducting, separation, catalysis, biomaterials and biosensing. Nanostructured materials exist as nanocrystalline materials (crystallites of 1-10 nm in diameter) and as nanoporous materials (structures consisting of nanometer-sized cavities or pores). Nanomaterials can be metal nanoparticles, ceramic nanoparticles, nanoporous materials, polymeric materials and composite materials. Porous materials (micro- and meso-) are of scientific and technological importance because of presence of the voids (cavities and channels with deformed geometry) of controllable dimensions at the atomic, molecular and nanometer scales, enabling them to discriminate and interact with molecules and clusters. Commercial applications of 7

nanoporous materials are in air separation, petroleum and petrochemical processing, environmental cleanup, chemical sensing, fine chemical catalysis, packaging and chemical separation. Porous materials with unique molecular sieving capabilities and ultrahigh surface area are ideal host and template materials for supramolecular organization and for fabrication of nanoscale devices. The nanoporous materials are considered as high tech strategic materials. An increasing interest and research effort have been driven in the synthesis, characterization, fictionalization and in molecular modeling and design. Among the new applications of nanoporous materials we can state photonic devices, nanocatalysts, environmental pollution control, biosensors, sensors, energy storage and fuel cell, membranes, drug delivery etc. The First Nanostructured Multifunctional Materials National Conference (NMM07) jointly organized by the Al.I.Cuza University of Iasi, Faculty of Chemistry, Laboratory of Materials Chemistry under the auspices of the Research Excellence Programme CEEX initiated by the Ministry of Education and Research, brings together experts in the field of nanomaterials to present and discuss their research and development work and serve as a stimulus for increased collaborations among the researchers. The proposed topics: 1. NANOSTRUCTURED POROUS MATERIALS 2. ADVANCED MULTIFUNCTIONAL MATERIALS 3. NATURAL AND SYNTHETIC ZEOLITES 4. MESOSTRUCTURED MATERIALS SYNTHESIS AND MODIFICATION 5. CATIONIC AND ANIONIC CLAYS 6. INDUSTRIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL APPLICATIONS 7. OTHER ASPECTS OF NANOMATERIALS SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 8

Round Tables: 1. FP-7 RESEARCH IN THE NANOSTRUCTURED MULTIFUNCTIONAL MATERIALS FIELD. 2. NEW DIRECTIONS IN NATURAL ZEOLITES SCIENCE The School of zeolites at the Al.I.Cuza University, Faculty of Chemistry started with the first PhD in 1968 obtained by Prof. dr. eng. M.Cruceanu who is one of the initiators of research in zeolite field. New PhD degrees in the zeolite field were obtained under the guidance of Prof. dr. eng. V.Ababi. The carriers out researches were connected with the diversification of structural types, extension of raw materials and the most favorable parameters of synthesis and with the applications. As a result of our research we published an important number of scientific papers in national and international journals. Our research focused on the zeolite field allowed as to organize four National Symposiums Zeolites in modern technologies, Iasi, October, 28-29, 1983, Iasi, October, 30-31, 1987, Iasi, November, , Iasi, September, 23-25, 1995 and, also, allowed to set up The Romanian Association of Zeolites and Molecular Sieves (ARZESIM). This NMM07 Conference (Sinaia, October, 18-20, 2007) intend to be a continuation of those very important and interesting symposiums. Organizing Committee 9

A short presentation of the Al.I.Cuza University of Iasi, as Conference organizing and Sinaia, Conference s location. The Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi is the oldest higher education institution in Romania. Since 1860, the university has been carrying on a tradition of excellency and innovation in the fields of education and research. With over students and 900 academic staff, the university enjoys high prestige at national and international level and cooperates with over 180 universities world-wide. Alexandru Ioan Cuza University is a member of some of the most important university networks and associations: EUA - European University Association, Utrecht Network, International Association of Universities, University Agency of Francophony and the Alexandru Ioan Cuza Network of Francophone Universities (RUFAC). Our partnerships offer the opportunity of experience exchanges, student and teacher mobility and of joint academic, research or strategy initiatives. The Alexandru Ioan Cuza University became the first student-centered university in Romania, once the Bologna Process was put into practice. We believe in the power of individual choice and customized education. Thus, we became the only university to give our students the opportunity to pick both a major and a minor field of study, in a combination at their choice that best suits their career goals 32

Sinaia is one of the most beautiful mountain resorts of Romania, combining natural beauty with picturesque architecture. The town was named after Sinaia Monastery, around which it was built; the monastery in turn is named after the Biblical Mount Sinai. King Carol I of Romania built his summer home, Peleş Castle, near the town. Sinaia is about 60 km northwest of Ploieşti and 50 km south of Braşov, in a mountainous area on the Prahova River valley, just east of the Bucegi Mountains. The altitude varies between 767 m and 860 m. The city is a popular destination for hiking and winter sports, especially downhill skiing. Among the tourist landmarks, the most important are Peleş Castle, Pelişor Castle, Sinaia Monastery, Sinaia Casino, Sinaia train station, and the Franz Joseph and Saint Anne Cliffs. Sinaia was also the summer residence of the great Romanian composer George Enescu, who stayed at the Luminiş villa. Considered by many one of the most beautiful castles in all Europe, Peles Castle is a masterpiece of German new-renaissance architecture. This castle was built in the final quarter of the last century for Romania's 'imported ruler' King Carol. Designed mainly in German Renaissance style, this summer residence was decorated throughout by Carol's eccentric wife Carmen Sylvan. Many valuable objects are contained within the castles 160 rooms. Almost adjacent to Peles Castle is Pelisor ("Little Peles"). King Ferdinand, who succeeded Carol I, intended to use Peles Castle as a summer residence. Pelisor's 70 rooms feature a unique 33

collection of turn-of-the century Viennese furniture and Tiffany and Lalique glassware, and were mostly decorated in the Art-Nouveau style by Queen Maria In the town of Sinaia and its surroundings restrictions are in place regarding cutting down or picking up flora. The felling of trees is not allowed. It is forbidden to pick up any alpine plants. Severe punishment may be in store for those who gather these plants: the Mountain Peony (Rhododendron Kotsky), Edelweiss (Leontopodium alpinum), and the Yellow Gentiana (Gentiana lutea). Tourist camping is only authorized in designated places, following necessary and compulsory protection standards. The mountainous area in which Sinaia is located is in the Bucegi Natural Park region. The Park covers a total area of square kilometres, of which square kilometres are under strict protection and shelter natural monuments. The Bucegi Natural Preserve area includes all the abrupt areas of the mountains Vârful cu Dor, Furnica, and Piatra Arsă. 34
