This course is a prerequisite for: NO COURSES Prerequisite(s) for this course: ANAT-1002 BIOL-1003 CHEM-1004 HLTH-1032 MATH-1024 PHYS-1005 HUMAN ANATOMY I BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES I CHEMISTRY I SUCCESS STRATEGIES IN HLTH PR MATHEMATICS PHYSICAL SCIENCES I Co-requisite(s) for this course: NO COURSES Course Description: This is a continuation of CHEM 1004 and involves a more detailed investigation into organic chemistry and biochemistry. Examples from inorganic, organic, industrial, and biological chemistry will be used to illustrate these underlying principles as well as applications to the various Health Science Programs. Vocational Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Compare and contrast saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons 2. Identify IUPAC nomenclature for organic compounds 3. Describe the characteristics and reactions of the functional groups 4. Discuss the biochemistry of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins 5. Detailed Content: The detailed content below is intended to give students an understanding of what they can expect to do in each unit of the course. There may be changes that occur to the detailed content once the College schedules class time and there may also be changes during the semester. The professor will provide students with a detailed class schedule on Fanshawe Online. Faculty reserve the right to alter curriculum material and delivery when deemed that an alternative strategy would best meet the outcome for the current student body. Unit 1 Saturated Hydrocarbons 1. Compare and contrast organic and inorganic compounds. 2. Draw structures that represent each of the families of organic compounds. 3. Write condensed and structural formulas for saturated hydrocarbons. 4. Describe the relationship between the structure and physical properties of saturated hydrocarbons. 5. Use the basic rules of the IUPAC nomenclature system to name alkanes and substituted alkanes. 6. Draw constitutional (structural) isomers of simple organic compounds. 7. Describe and name simple cycloalkanes. 8. Describe the combustion and halogenation reactions of alkanes. Unit 2 Unsaturated Hydrocarbons

3 1. Describe the physical properties of alkenes and alkynes. 2. Draw the structures and write the IUPAC names of simple alkenes and alkynes. 3. Write the names and draw the structures of simple geometric isomers of alkenes. 4. Describe the addition reactions of alkenes; hydrogenation halogenation, hydration. 5. Distinguish between symmetrical and asymmetrical reactions and the use of Markovnikovs rule. 6. Describe the formation of addition polymers of alkenes. 7. Draw structures and write the names of common aromatic hydrocarbons. 8. Describe the substitution reactions involving benzene. 9. Describe heterocyclic aromatic compounds and list several biological molecules in which they are found. Unit 3 Alcohols, Phenols and Ethers 1. Describe the differences between selected alcohols by relative water solubility, boiling or melting points. 2. Write the names and draw structures for common alcohols. 3. Classify alcohols as primary, secondary and tertiary. 4. Describe the preparation of alcohols. 5. Describe the dehydration reactions using Zeitzevs rule and oxidation reactions of alcohols. 6. Describe the use of phenols as germicides. 7. Write the names and draw structures for common ethers. 8. Write the names and draw structures for simple thiols and discuss their biological significance. Unit 4 Aldehydes and Ketones 1. Draw the structures and discuss the physical properties of aldehydes and ketones. 2. From the structures write the common and IUPAC names of aldehydes and ketones. 3. Describe the biological medical or environmental significance of several aldehydes and ketones. 4. Describe the preparation of aldehydes and ketones by the oxidation of alcohols. 5. Describe the oxidation and reduction reactions of carbonyl compounds. 6. Describe the preparation of hemiacetals, hemiketals, acetals and ketals. Unit 5 Carboxylic Acids and Esters 1. Write structures and describe the physical properties of carboxylic acids. 2. Determine the common and IUPAC names of carboxylic acids. 3. Describe the biological medical or environmental significance of several carboxylic acids. 4. Describe the synthesis of a carboxylic acid. 5. Describe the preparation of an ester. 6. Write structures and describe the physical properties of esters. 7. Determine the common and IUPAC names of esters. 8. Describe the hydrolysis reaction of ester. 9. Define saponification and describe how soap works in the emulsification of grease and oil. Unit 6 Amines and Amides 1. Classify amines as primary, secondary or tertiary. 2. Describe the physical properties of amines. 3. Describe the synthesis of amines. 4. Describe the structure of quaternary ammonium salts and discuss their use as antiseptics and disinfectants. 5. Discuss the biological significance of simple and heterocyclic amines. 6. Describe the physical properties of amides. 7. Draw the structure and write the common and IUPAC names of amides. 8. Describe the preparation of amides. 9. Describe the hydrolysis of amides. 10. Discuss the biological significance of amides

4 Unit 7 Carbohydrates 1. Explain the difference between complex and simple carbohydrates. 2. Apply the systems of classifying and naming monosaccharides according to the functional group and number of carbons in the chain. 3. Explain stereoisomerism and identify monosaccharides as D or L. 4. Identify the common disaccharides and discuss their significance in biological systems. 5. Discuss the structural, chemical and biochemical properties of starch, glycogen and cellulose. Unit 8 Lipids 1. Discuss the physical and chemical properties and biological function of each of the family of lipids. 2. Write the structures of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. 3. Compare and contrast the structure and properties of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. 4. Describe the reaction of fatty acids. 5. Draw the structure of a phospholipid and discuss its amphipathic nature. 6. Discuss the general classes of sphingolipids and their function. 7. Draw the structure of the steroid nucleus and discuss the function of steroid hormones. 8. Describe the function of lipoprotein in triglyceride and cholesterol transport in the body. 9. Explain the structure and function of biological waxes. Unit 9 Proteins 1. List the functions of proteins. 2. Draw the general structure of an amino acid. 3. Explain the difference between essential and non essential amino acid. 4. Describe the primary structure of proteins and draw the structure of the peptide bond. 5. Describe the types of secondary structure of protein and discuss the forces that maintain this structure. 6. Describe the tertiary and quaternary structure of a protein and discuss the forces that maintain these structures. 7. Explain the processes causing the denaturation of protein. 8. Describe amino acids as zwitterions 9. Explain the use of electrophoresis for separating proteins Unit 10 Enzymes and Vitamins 1. Classify enzymes according to the type of reaction catalyzed and the types of specificity. 2. Explain the effect of enzyme catalysts on reaction rate. 3. Discuss the role of the active site and the importance of enzyme specificity. 4. Discuss the roles of cofactors and coenzymes in enzyme activity. 5. Give examples of the medical uses of enzymes. 6. Discuss the general properties of vitamins. 7. Differentiate between water soluble and fat soluble vitamins and their role in the body. Classroom response system TurningPoint Clicker (Blue LCD model) Method Of Evaluation: The final mark/grade for this course will be determined as follows: Method Percentage Mid Term Exam 40% Assignments and/or in-class quizzes 20% Final Exam 40% TOTAL 100% Evaluation delivery may be altered if the course instructor determines an alternative learning strategy will best meet the outcome for the current student body. Students must complete each evaluation to be eligible for a comprehensive supplemental evaluation. Missed Evaluations Students are required to complete all evaluations at/by the scheduled date and time. A mark of zero is recorded for all missed evaluations. Students cannot make the assumption that any provision will be made by the professor to reschedule missed evaluations. If illness or serious extenuating circumstances prevent attendance, the student must notify the course professor or one of the divisional secretaries at the College, prior to the scheduled/due date and time of the evaluation in question; otherwise, a mark of zero will be automatically assigned. Rescheduling of a missed evaluation may be granted in exceptional circumstances as specified by Division Policy and after consultation with your professor, and it must be completed within one (1) week of the original test date. A $35.00 fee is charged for all such rescheduled evaluations regardless of the circumstances. the format of any rescheduled evaluation is at the course professor's discretion and may not follow the original test format. Examples of invalid excuses which may result in the assignment of zero (0) for missed evaluations include planned or unplanned vacations, transportation problems, job demands, friends' problems, sick family members, and/or lack of preparedness. Faculty reserve the right to request a note from the appropriate professional for a missed evaluation before a rewrite may be granted. Upgrades This course is upgradeable under college policy 2-C-04. See program intersession course information posted on FOL. Educational Technology this course requires regular computer use. Course information will be available on-line using FOL or
