2 Research Experience Dec Postdoctoral Researcher, University of Massachusetts, Amherst Mentor: Prof. Alfred J. Crosby, Polymer Science and Engineering I elucidated the deformation mechanism of a Crosby-lab-invented soft materials measurement technique, Cavitation Rheology, enabling more precisely a connection between measurement and intrinsic mechanical properties. I accomplished this through a combination of experiments, finite element analysis, and analytical modeling. Additionally, I fabricated and processed 2D nanoparticle ribbon-structures as components for organic photovoltaic active layers. Concurrently, I aided in writing two proposals, Focal Evaluation of Skin Elasticity: Demonstrating Clinical Relevance and Potential (UMass Medical internal grant, unfunded) and Size Dependent Mechanical Properties for Elastic Polymer Gels (NSF, funded). Jun-Nov 2011 Postdoctoral Researcher, California Institute of Technology Mentor: Prof. Julia R. Greer, Materials Science and Mechanics I explored image analysis as a method for determination of density gradient in vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VACNTs) and developed a microstructural theory postulating the existence of an intrinsic, material-level instability in VACNT materials. I also wrote my first independent proposal to NSF s SEES Fellowship, Chemomechanical characterization of ionomer fuel cell membranes for informed sustainable energy design (NSF SEES, unfunded) Graduate Research Assistant, California Institute of Technology Advisor: Prof. Julia R. Greer, Materials Science I utilized a constitutive relation incorporating a material instability and implemented this model using finite element modeling to capture VACNT deformation behavior as I observed it experimentally. These observations were gathered by designing and coding specialized mechanical testing programs for the elucidation of material behavior and constants. I fabricated both pillar test geometry samples and custom diamond flat punch indenter tips for testing using a focused ion beam Graduate Research Assistant, California Institute of Technology Advisor: Prof. Zhen-Gang Wang, Chemical Engineering I used a density functional theoretical framework to develop a mean field description of the nucleation of charged macromolecules in solution. I solved the resulting complex energy minimization problems numerically in C and Matlab. Summer 2002 Undergraduate Research Assistant, Univ. of Massachusetts Medical School Advisor: Prof. C. Robert Matthews, Biochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology I performed initial salt-induced denaturation studies to observe protein-folding energetics of superoxide dismutase, which I purified from wild type and ligand binding modified forms obtained via cell culture. Final results were presented in a poster session. CV Hutchens 2 of 6
