3 RESEARCH PROFILE Study of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as stationary phases for gas chromatographic separations and evaluation of their functionalization for selectivity tuning and resolution improvement; development of chromatographic methods using MWCNTs-based stationary phases for the analysis of actual samples; purification of commercial MWCNTs from metal impurities; study of adsorption and surface properties of pristine, purified and chemically-modified MWCNTs by inverse gas chromatography; synthesis of novel HPLC stationary phases by radiation-induced grafting of MWCNTs onto silica microspheres; use of (derivatized)mwcnts as solid-phase extraction sorbents for the determination of environmental pollutants. Development of selective analytical methods for the trace determination of emerging pollutants such as Fluoroquinolones (FQs), perfluoroalkyl compounds (PFCs) and benzotriazoles (BTRs) in environmental complex matrices (surface water, soil, compost); study of photolytic degradation of FQs in natural water, soil and clays minerals, identification of the main byproducts and study of their residual antimicrobial activity; evaluation of clays and zeolites as green adsorbents for the removal of micro-pollutants from surface waters.
