No. (020) Associate Professor in Chemistry Degree Year Institute Class B.Sc. (Chemistry) April 1981 Pune University I st M.Sc. (Inorganic Chemistry) April 1983 Dept. of Chemistry, I st Pune University Ph.D. (Chemistry) Nov Dept. of Chemistry, Pune University Title of: thesis: STRUCTURAL CHARACTERIZATION OF TRANSITION METAL COMPLEXES OF POTENTIAL ANTI-TUMOR and ANTI-MALARIAL NAPHTHOQUINONE THIOSEMICARBAZONES Thesis advisor: PROFESSOR SUBHASH PADHYE Leverhulme Post-doctoral Oct School of Chemistry, University of Hull Fellowship Feb.1992 Kingston upon Hull, HU6 7RX, England. Brain-Pool International June 2004 Micro-chemical Technology, Korea Fellow May 2005 Research Institute of Chemical Technology, Daejeon, South Korea Broad Area of Research: Bio-inorganic Chemistry, Catalysis, Nanomaterials for environmental applications and organic synthesis Research Experience: (a) Ph.D. Work: Worked on the problem of `design and synthesis of new metal based anti-malarial and antitumor agents'. During the research tenure, synthesized metal complexes were screened for their anti-tumor activity against P-388 Lymphocytic cells. Two of the synthesized compounds exhibited > 90% anti-tumor activity. Structural characterization of these complexes involved different spectroscopic techniques such as ESR, Variable temperature magnetic susceptibility (VTMS), Mossbauer, Single crystal X-ray structure determination and electrochemical analysis. In order to derive meaningful structural information of these complexes, rigorous calculations were performed on ESR and Magnetic data. Familiar with controlled atmosphere synthesis using Schlenk assembly as well as many of the physico-chemical techniques including NMR, ESR, Cyclic Voltammetry and single crystal X-ray analysis. (b) Post-doctoral Work: (1) Worked with Professor J.P. Tuchagues at Laboratoire de Chimie de Coordination, CNRS, Toulouse, France, for three weeks as a visiting post-doctoral fellow. Carried out work on "Synthetic Models for Water Splitting Enzyme of PS II Reaction Center". (2) Worked as a "LEVERHULME COMMONWEALTH POST DOCTORAL FELLOW" with Professor Ekkehardt Sinn at School of Chemistry, University of Hull, England for a period of One and half year (Oct Feb. 92) in the fields of `New Inorganic materials' and `Bio-
2 inorganic Chemistry'. During the tenure, first research problem was based on `Synthesis and Characterization of Transition Metal Complexes' having biological relevance such as models of enzymatic bio-molecules. It involved systematic approach for the synthesis of desired complexes as well as structural characterization using variety of spectroscopic techniques. Also, the second problem investigated was related to `Design and Synthesis of Metal Complexes as Inorganic Liquid Crystals'. (3) Worked as a BRAIN-POOL INTERNATIONAL FELLOW at Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology (KRICT) Daejeon, South Korea, under Brain-Pool Program of Korea Science and Engineering Foundation (KOSEF) for a period of one year in the field of Nanomaterials During the tenure, two project were undertaken: First was related to synthesis, characterization and dispersibility of nano-iron oxide and magnesium oxide in heavy oil as a fuel additive. Nano-sized crystals were synthesized by solvothermal technique and they were characterized using XRD, IR, TGA-DTA, ESR, PL, Magnetization, SEM, FESEM and HRTEM techniques. The iron oxide dispersibility was found to be about 15% by weight in model solvents while the particle size was found to be around 10 nm. The second problem involved Large Scale synthesis of Carbon Nanotubes by Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) employing different catalysts. Characterization of these nanotubes reveals them to be thin multi-walled as evidenced from TGA-DTA, XRD, SEM, Raman and TEM analysis. (c) Collaborative Research Work: 1. A research project dealing with design and synthesis of nanomaterials such as Bi, Bi-Pt, Bi- Pd has been undertaken in collaboration with Scientist from National Chemical Laboratory, Pune. The work involves structural characterization of these materials as well as their catalytic efficiencies towards hydrogenation and oxidation reactions under the theme of Green Chemistry. 2. Another research project involves synthesis of metal and semiconductor nanoparticles as a photocatalysts for environmental remediation in collaboration with Scientist from Agharkar Research Institute, Pune. 3.
