10 Year 12 ESYS Environmenta l world view Ecosystem Systems and Models Conservation of Biodiversity Population Dynamics This topic, in its entirety, could be considered a component of a theory of knowledge course, and particularly directs students to evaluate their own personal standpoints. Any knowledge is put to use in either intellectual argument or practical application, tends to carry with it a value-laden context. It covers history and development of environmental movements. The techniques required in this topic may be exemplified through practical work in marine, terrestrial, freshwater or urban ecosystems, or any combination of these. The selection of environments can be made according to the local systems available. The topic looks into the structure, components, function and changes in the ecosystem. The topic identifies some of the underlying principles that can be applied to living systems, from the level of the individual up to that of the whole biosphere. The systems approach also emphasizes the similarities between environmental systems, biological systems and artificial entities such as transport and communication systems. This topic raises some engaging issues of debate concerning the moral justification for exploiting species and the moral imperative for conserving them. It looks into evolution and speciation. Tracks governmental and nongovernmental organisations that work in preservation and conservation of species. It evaluates the biodiversity and vulnerability of species. The unit identifies the effect of human population into biodiversity and resource consumption. It relates on the geographical and political issues governing local and international communities. It looks into population demographics, the MDG's and ecological footprint. The students will start working on their first independent investigation at this time.

Opinion within scientific and political communities is divided on this issue, and students are encouraged to develop a personal viewpoint having considered the arguments. The topic includes the issue that involves the international community working together to research and reduce the effects of global warming Natural resources Pollution Revision The topic identifies how natural resources are managed in relation with its availability and consumption. The following are learned in the unit, energy resources, soil as a resource, water and food resources. Students will start working on their second independent investigation at this time. The purpose of this topic is to give a broad overview of pollution and its management with reference to examples from aquatic, terrestrial and atmospheric systems.
