2 Keith John CARPENTER Ph.D., F.R.Eng., F.I.Ch.E., C.Eng., M.ACS Executive Director Institute of Chemical and Engineering Sciences Block 28 Ayer Rajah Crescent, Unit # Singapore Phone: / keith_carpenter@ices.a-star.edu.sg MAJOR RESEARCH INTERESTS 1. Crystallisation and particle science Our focus is mainly on techniques to measure and to control form, shape, size and physical properties of complex organic materials for purification and formulation as pharmaceuticals, fine chemicals and personal care products. In particular we are interested in the effects of impurities, especially where these are very similar molecules, even stereo isomers and tautomers of the main compound. Understanding nucleation and growth are fundamental to controlling the product properties. A wide range of skills and disciplines interact including process engineering, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, characterisation and analysis. 2. Interface science The interaction between surfaces and molecules in solution controls the stability of many formulated products, including emulsions, dispersions and agglomerates. Understanding and controlling the nature of interfaces is a key element in controlling product properties. 3. Chemical Reactions and Reaction engineering In many chemical processes the reaction and the reactor are at the heart of the process and determine the cost effectiveness. Techniques to control yield and selectivity both by controlling the reaction and by better engineering are key aspects of this work. RECENT REPRESENTATIVE PUBLICATIONS 1. J.H. Atherton and K.J.
