2 Four new species of Lepanthes Sw. from Costa Rica Carlyle A. Luer MD & Johan Hermans Figs 4 1 and 42. Lepanth es clareae Luer & Herm ans sp. nov. Abstract Although the flora of Costa Rica has bee n studied intensively by seve ral institutions and resea rchers for the past century and a half, new species of the pleurothallid ge nus l epanthe s are continu ally being reco gnized. Prior to the prese nt four new spec ies disco v ered rece ntly by Joh an Herman s and his wife Dr Clare Herm ans, approximately 60 species of Lepanthe s were known from that small, Central American countr y. Three of the new specie s are des cribed from plant s that have flowered in cultivation by the Hermans in Crews Hill. Another of these new species has also been discovered by Steve and Karen Ingram of Bishop, California. The following species are member s of subsection Lepanthes distinguished by congested racemes shorter than the leaf. 3mm 2mm ~ w 5 cm..,., Lepanthes amplectens Luer & Hermans, sp. nov. Planta parva, ramicaulium vaginis microscopi ce ciliatis, inflorescentia congestissima folio ovato acuto breviore, sepalis ovatis acutis denticulatis carinatis, petalis transverse bilobis oblongis obtusi s, labelli laminis ovatis acutis columnam amplectentibus, connectivis corporque latissimis, appendice parva in sinu acuto. Typus: COSTA RICA: Prov. of Puntarenas, road to Santa Elena near the Monteverde Reserve, alt. 1,400m, flowered in cultivation 12 Jan 1994, J. & C. Hermans 2357 (holotypus: MO). Plant small, epiphytic, caespitose ; roots slender. Ramicauls slender, erect, 30-S0mm long, enclosed by 8-10 microscopically ciliate, lepanthiform sheaths. Leaf erect, coriaceous, ovate, acute, 22-30mm long, 8-llmm wide, the base cuneate into a 1mm long petiole. Inflorescence a very congested, distichous, successively many-flowered ORCHID REVIEW VOL
