2 Read and Learn Sometimes you can work out the meaning of a word by reading and understanding a sentence. Work out what the word 'revolve' means by reading the text. Our earth revolves around the sun once every 24 hours. Earth is just one of 10 planets that travel around the sun. Because they all revolve around the sun and do not wander off into space, we say these 10 planets are a system. We call this a system a solar system because the sun is the centre of the system. 1. Mankind has dreamed about space since cavemen first stared up at the skies. Ancient people all over the world discovered how the world works which was revealed by the night sky. The passing of the season is controlled by the closeness of our earth to the sun at different times at the year. The phases of the moon control the rise and fall of the tide at the beach. Sailors learned they could use the stars as navigation aids in their travels across the great oceans of the world. Egyptians used the stars to work out the angles of their pyramids. Some scientists believe that the ancient Britons arranged the great circle of stone pillars at Stonehenge so the sun could mark the solstice (the longest day of the year) by shining in one particular spot between the pillars on that day. 1. 3 Comprehension I Text Type: Explanation An explanation presents an argument for why. Read the following explanation and answer the questions. Children should be made aware that diseases can be spread by touch. They need to be careful and make sure that they keep themselves clean. An infected area may be touched. This is called direct contact. Indirect contact means that a person may touch objects that have already been infected. For example, impetigo (or school sores) is a skin disease that affects mainly children. The sores appear on the exposed parts of the body such as the face, hands, arms and legs. It spreads to other areas by scratching. Other people may get it through direct or indirect contact. Blisters burst and harden to form a yellow crust. Fluid may ooze from these. To treat impetigo, you should remove the crusts with soap and water and apply cream containing antibiotics. Impetigo sores usually heal within a week and do not leave scars. 1. Read the following explanation and answer the questions The Mystery of the Golden Wombat By: Jill Morris In 1980 I saw the carcass of a wombat which had been shot in a field on the east coast of Flinders Island. It didn't look like an ordinary wombat. It had golden fur. Year later, I saw nine wombats with pale golden fur, feeding on a hillside on the centre of the island. Many of the wombats on Flinders Island have silver-grey fur, like other common wombats. The lightcoloured variation seems to be quite rare. Why are these wombats golden? It is because they are old and their dark fur has gone pale with age? No - because some I saw looked young. It is because their fir has been bleached by the sun? No - because the fur is the same colour all over the wombat's bodies: back, head and legs. It is because the soil in that area is lacking in some mineral, and that makes the animals' fur lighter in colour? I saw golden wombats in two, different areas. I don't think the colour is caused by the food they eat or the soil where it grows. I think the variation in fur colour is genetic - meaning that the wombats are born with it. 4
