What is an SDI? Global Spatial Data Infrastructure, GSDI Cookbook An SDI denotes the relevant base collection of technologies, policies and institutional arrangements that facilitate the availability of and access to spatial data It provides a basis for spatial data discovery, evaluation, and application for users and providers within all levels of government, the commercial sector, the non-profit sector, academia and by citizens in general 11

Components of an SDI (compliance) Metadata Data Services Data Policy Organisational cooperation Standards Delivering benefit e.g egovernment 12

Some key principles (value add) Easy to discover data and evaluate its suitability (discovery services) Data are stored & maintained at the most appropriate level (distributed) Possible to combine data from different sources in a consistent way (data integration) Data collected at one level of public authority can be shared with other levels (local < > national) Remove obstacles to use (maximise use) SDI = DATA SHARING = BETTER DECISIONS 13

SDI Development Value-adding Data integration Compliance Data discovery Non-compliance Ad-hoc Time 14

Ad hoc SDI - Characteristics No formal mandate or SDI governance structure No overall strategy for the SDI User knowledge of datasets and data providers important But, many of the elements of an SDI are present Metadata & Data exists: but to what standards? Definitive or multiple sources? How useful is the metadata? Pricing & Licensing policies; legal framework Bi-lateral cooperation Private sector developing value added services 15

European SDI the INSPIRE Directive A framework framework directive to lay down general rules aimed at the establishment of the Infrastructure for Spatial Information in the European Community. Primary purpose of the directive is to provide relevant spatial information in support of Community environmental policies. The European infrastructure will be built upon National SDIs.
