AUSTRALIAN CURRICULUM: SCIENCE Strand: Sub-strand: Descriptor: SCIENCE WORDS Science Understanding Biological Sciences Living things have basic needs, including food and water Plants, living things, roots, stem, leaves, flowers, fruit, seeds, water, soil, sun, air, grow, change INFORMATION FOR PARENTS OR CAREGIVER Helping your child learn to read is a rewarding and enjoyable experience for both you and your child. Here are some ways you can help your child with their reading. BEFORE READING Introduce the book; read the title and look at the picture on the front cover. Ask what the book might be about. Ask your child if they know any examples of plants. Look through the book and talk about the pictures. Can they identify any plants they know? Refer to the science words. Discuss each word and its meaning. These words will appear in the book. Science is fun! We learn cool things everyday! Today we will learn about plants. Plants DURING READING Ensure the book is being held correctly and your child is tracking the words from left to right across the page. Encourage your child to look at the pictures for clues if they are unsure of a word. Should your child need help to decode a word, break it down into its individual sounds, and blend them together from left to right. SCIENCE CONCEPTS IN THIS BOOK Plants constitute one of a number of kingdoms that define living things; other common kingdoms include animals, fungi and bacteria. The plant kingdom has over 300 000 species and includes flowering plants, conifers, ferns and green algae. Most plants grow from seeds and typically possess roots, a stem, leaves, flowers and fruits (although not all plants are flowering plants with fruits). Plants gain their energy from the sun and convert carbon dioxide and water into cellulose via the process of photosynthesis this process also produces most of the Earth s oxygen. Plants are the source of much of our food through grains, fruits and vegetables; they are also a source of many drugs and medicines. The study of plants is known as botany. Written for the Australian Curriculum: Science Sienna Osborne Randall Hall Richard John

This is a plant. A plant is a living thing. Did you know the Golden Wattle is Australia s national plant? 2 3

Plants have different parts. They have roots, a stem, leaves, flowers and fruit. Not all plants have flowers. Ferns and mosses are examples of plants that have no flowers. 4 5

If a plant has what it needs, then it will grow and change. AFTER READING Ask your child what the book was about and encourage them to re-tell it in the order in which it appeared. Discuss the following with your child to assist in understanding the content of the book: Can you name the different parts of a plant? What do you think would happen if a plant had no water or no sunlight? We eat a lot of plants. What other living things do we eat? Do you have a favourite plant to eat? 16 WOW! Plants are cool! And so is science. In this book Suzie the Scientist helps us learn about plants. We see lots of different examples of plants and learn about the different parts of a plant, including the parts we like to eat. Suzie also shows us the four things plants need to grow and change. Australian Curriculum: All books in the Suzie the Scientist series are written for the Australian Curriculum: Science and align directly to what children learn in the classroom. This book addresses the learning outcome Living things have basic needs, including food and water from the Biological Sciences sub-strand. WOW! Plants are cool! And so is science. Plants Biological Sciences PARENTS, READ ALONG WITH SUZIE! Throughout this book Suzie the Scientist tells us interesting scientific facts. Use these pages to encourage further interest and discussion about plants with your child.
