Introduction The Environment Committee of the Como Community Council, District 10 (District 10) undertook a study of turtle population in Como Lake. This is a part of an ongoing series of natural resource Inventory studies being conducted by District 10 of Como Lake and surrounding Como Park. The purpose of the study is to establish a baseline of the turtle population in Como Lake. The results present an estimate or representative snapshot of the turtle population in the lake, not a comprehensive count of the total population. Como Lake is located in St. Paul Minnesota (Figure 1). It is a 16-acre hypereutrophic lake surrounded by developed residential neighborhood and parkland. The lake is shallow with a maximum depth of 16 feet and a median depth of 5 feet. Inflow to the lake is stormwater directed by storm sewers from three communities (St. Paul, Falcon Heights, and Roseville). The outflow is a storm sewer that empties from an elevated drainpipe within the lake and discharges into the Mississippi River near downtown St. Paul. There is no natural inflow or outflow and few water bodies near the lake, so there is expected to be limited migration of turtles into or out of the lake. The study is broken up into two parts; the basking study and the trapping study. The details of each study are presented below. Photographs from the trapping study are presented at the end of the report. Basking study Basking details The basking study took place from May 1, 2011 through August 23, 2011, and consisted of walking around the lake and counting the number of turtles seen basking in and along the lake. The perimeter of the lake was divided into 13 sections which were based on the St. Paul Parks and Recreation Department plan Como Lake Shoreline Vegetation Management Plan (March 8, 2000). In that plan, the 13 sections assisted in planning the revegetation and maintenance of the lake shoreline (Figure 2). Section 1 begins at the northeast side of the lake and the sections progress clockwise around the lake. The number of turtles of each species was recorded for each section, as along with the day s temperature, weather and wind conditions. No attempt was made to identify individual turtles. The turtles were seen on logs and rocks in the lake, along the shore, and floating in the water. In general, Painted Turtles bask on logs and rocks. The Snapping Turtles were found floating in the water. Counts were made on 85 of the 120 days during the basking study. Turtles were not seen on only three of the 85 days. The daily temperature ranged from 37 degrees in May to 101 degrees in June. The average temperature was 75 degrees. All temperatures are in Fahrenheit. Volunteers from District 10 conducted the counts. 1

Basking Results The basking study observed a total of 2052 Painted and 47 Snapping Turtles. Table 1 presents a breakdown of the number of turtles observed in each section. There were seven days when 70 or more Painted Turtles were observed. Three Snapping Turtles were observed on June 7, June 8, and July 15. Generally only one Snapping Turtle was observed in a day. The sections of the lake where more Painted Turtles were observed tended to be the sections with the most downed trees or locations where the turtles could climb out of the water to bask. The number of turtles observed by month is presented in Table 2. The number of Painted Turtles decreased significantly by August, while the number of Snapping Turtles was consistent in all months. 4

Temperature does not appear to be a major factor in the number of turtles sighted. On May 30 th the temperature was 85 degrees and 103 turtles were observed. July 19 th was also 85 degrees and 21 turtles were observed. June 7 had a temperature of 101 degrees and only 25 turtles were observed. The complete set of data is presented in Appendix A. Trapping study Trapping details The trapping occurred during May, June, and July 2011. The trapping was conducted by Como Zoo personnel with assistance from volunteers. The Como Zoo had a trapping permit from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (Permit # 17471). A copy of the permit is presented in Appendix B. Three traps were set in the lake (see Figure 2): the southeast end of the lake (in Section 7) the northeast side of the lake (in Section 1) in the north end of the lake (in Section 13) The traps were set in approximately the same location each week of the study. The traps were set for a week and then removed for at least one week. The initial plan was to trap for two weeks separated by a week but a third week of trapping was added during the project. The dates of the trapping were May 17 through May 21, May 31 through June 4, and June 28 through July 2. The traps were set on Tuesday, checked on Thursday and removed on Saturday. The traps were checked and emptied every 48 hours. The traps were hoops traps approximately three feet high and four feet long. The traps were set in about 2 feet of water with sufficient room above the water to prevent any turtles drowning. The captured turtles were identified, sexed, and their carapace length measured. Snapping Turtle s weight was estimated by lifting the turtle. The carapace was notched on all turtles caught to identify which turtles were recaptured. The turtles were released back into the lake after they were measured. Trapping Results The traps were in the water for a total of 15 days and 150 turtles were trapped. Snapping and Painted Turtles were the only types of turtles caught. Two Painted Turtles escaped from Trap 1 on June 4 during removal of the other turtles. A summary of the number of turtles trapped is presented below. The full results are presented in Appendix C. The most turtles were captured in the first two days with 54 turtles captured. The numbers decreased with time until the last two days of trapping only 5 turtles were captured. From the beginning of the trapping through the first week in June, more Painted Turtles were captured than Snapping Turtles. After this more Snapping Turtles were captured than Painted. Fish While not a part of the original project, fish were also captured in the traps. The fish were counted by species and released back into the lake. A summary of the results is presented below and the complete results are presented in Appendix D. Total fish captured 407 Types of fish and total number captured: Black Bullhead - 4 Black Crappie - 11 Bluegill - 332 Northern Pike - 1 Perch - 1 Pumpkin Seed - 22 White Crappie - 24 Yellow Bullhead - 12 The most fish were caught on the last day (July 2) with 185 fish captured, including 162 bluegills. The lowest number of fish captured was on June 4 with 10 captured. Conclusions This study found Painted and Snapping Turtles are the predominant, possibly the only, turtle species in Como Lake. During the basking study, 2,052 Painted Turtles and 47 Snapping Turtles were observed from May 1, 2011 through August 23 2011. Many of the Painted Turtles were observed basking in sections of the lake with a large number of downed trees. During the trapping study, 118 Painted Turtles and 32 Snapping Turtles were caught, measured, sexed and released. During the trapping study, 407 fish were also caught and counted. It appears that the lake has a robust turtle population. However, only two turtle species were observed. It maybe that other species are present but were not observed during the basking study, nor caught during the trapping study.
