UH will play the Bulldogs for one game on Tuesday, May 7 (6:00 p.m. PT, 3:00 p.m. HT) then close the trip with three Big West Conference games against the Dirtbags on Friday, May 10 (6:00 p.m. PT, 3:00 p.m. HT), Saturday, May 11 (2:00 p.m. PT, 11:00 a.m. HT), and Sunday, May 12 (1:00 p.m. PT, 10:00 a.m. HT). The Bows won their second Big West series and first on the road after taking two of three games this past weekend at Pacific. Hawai i (11-30, 6-12 BWC) would have completed its first series sweep of the season if not for a ninth-inning rally by the Tigers in Sunday s series finale loss. First baseman Marc Flores had a stellar weekend at the plate. He batted.667 (6-9) in the series while adding four runs and belting his second homerun of the season, a solo shot in game two. Third base- man Pi ikea Kitamura also went yard in the second game of the series, helping UH complete its comeback with an RBI hit in the ninth inning. UH and Fresno State will play each other for the first time not as members of the Western Athletic Conference. Both the Rainbows and Bulldogs left the WAC last season with UH joining the Big West and Fresno State going to the Mountain West. The Bulldogs enter the week 16-29 overall and 10-14 in conference. Long Beach State stands at 21-24 overall and is fifth in the Big West at 9-9, three games up on Hawai i. The Bows played at Long Beach State as recently as 2011 where the Dirtbags won the lone meeting, 4-3. Old Foes - Fresno leads the all-time series 80-51. The two teams have a rich history as members of the WAC but this game will have a very different feel as the two teams play as members of different conferences. The two teams played their last game in the opening round of the 2012 WAC Tournament where FS beat UH en route to winning its second straight tournament title. They last played in Fresno in 2011 where UH won the first two games of the series before the Bulldogs earned the split with wins in games three and four. In 2010, the two teams played three times in the WAC Tournament including a winner-take-all game that UH won en route to an appearance in the NCAA Tempe Regional. Facing the Dirtbags - Long Beach State holds a 5-2 advantage over the Bows in their all-time series. This will be the first time UH will play at LBSU for for more than one game. The two teams met back in 1989 in the NCAA Regional in Tucson, Ariz. All-Time Results vs. Long Beach State (2-5) Date Result Score Site 3/7/11 L 3-4 A 3/24/10 W 8-2 H 3/9/08 L 3-4 H 3/8/08 L 2-4 H 3/7/08 L 2-8 H *5/26/89 L 7-14 N 4/25/79 W 10-0 A *NCAA Tucson Regional Up and Down - Reliever Lawrence Chew has been far from the pitcher he was a season ago but lately had been getting the job done out of the pen. In what hopefully was a hiccup in a good string play, he gave up a double and a single allowing three runs to score in Pacific s four-run ninth inning rally on Sunday. He pitched to two hitters and was tagged with the loss. Prior to that performance, he had four straight scoreless outings, getting a win and a save this past weekend. Over that four-game stretch, he allowed no runs on one hit in five and twothirds innings. In UH s win two weeks ago against then No. 4 Cal State Fullerton, he entered a tie game in the 8th inning. He forced a ground out to strand two runner s and set the stage for UH to score the winning run in the bottom of the inning. Chew faced a similar situation in the opener of the Pacific series, forcing a pop up to strand two Tiger runners and preserve the lead. Finding the Holes - This past weekend, UH s bats that had gone so quiet against Cal State Fullerton started to wake from their slumber. They had more hits (32) over the three games than any other conference series, and scored more runs (14) than in the previous two conference road series. Two For The Money - Both Pi ikea Kitmaura and Marc Flores belted homers in game two of the Pacific series. It was the first multihomerun game of the season for the Bows. UH had hit only two homeruns all season prior to that game. Best In The West - Shortstop Austin Wobrock has been UH s best hitter during 2013 RAINBOW BASEBALL - PAGE 3 HAWAIIATHLETICS.COM

Kuzminsky Making His Mark - Reliever Scott Kuzminsky has been used once in every series of the season, but made two appearances against Pacific. In two and two-thirds innings, he allowed no runs on three hits with a strikeout and just one walk. In game two of the Pacific series he worked a scoreless eighth inning in a setup role to help preserve a 4-3 win. After his two solid appearances last weekend he is now tied for third on the team in with a 4.02 ERA. A Weekend To Forget - Conner George, who entered the Pacific series as UH s leading hitter, had a weekend at the plate to forget. He failed to record a hit in the series, going 0-13 with one walk and a run scored. To date though, he is fourth on the team with a.254 batting average. Making Them Work - The UH pitch- ing staff may have given up its fair share of runs, but the opposition has needed to bring their bats to the plate. The Bows rank in the NCAA s top 100 in both walks per 9 innings and K/BB ratio. They are the 26th most efficient team in the nation with a 2.76 BB/9 inning ratio and rank No. 99 with a 2.04 K/BB ratio. PK Earns Bonham Award - Pi ikea Kitamura, along with softball player Kelly Majam and two-sport athlete Stephanie Ricketts were the recipients of the 2013 Jack Bonham Award in recognition of their outstanding performances on and off the playing field. MIKE TRAPASSO 35 Head Coach 12th Season Oklahoma State (1987) 355-324 Mike Trapasso enters his 12th season as the head coach of the University of Hawai i baseball program. After 11 seasons of guiding his team through the Western Athletic Conference, Coach Trap hopes to take the program to new heights as the team transitions to its new home in the Big West Conference. He has led his teams to winning records in eight of the last nine seasons, and has guided his teams to 30 or more wins in eight of his seasons. Trapasso is 344-294 overall at Hawai i. 2012 saw Coach Trapasso guide the Rainbows to their fourth straight 30-win season on their final WAC campaign. In 2011, Coach Trapasso was named WAC Coach of the Year for the third time, as UH was named Co-Regular Season Champions for the first time since 1992 and earned the No. 1 seed in the WAC Tournament. The Rainbows advanced to the championship before falling to Fresno State, finishing the season with an overall record of 34-25. The 2010 season saw the Bows advance to the NCAA West Regional in Tempe, Arizona for the first time since 2006. The team won its first WAC Tournament Championship since 1992 before falling to top-ranked Arizona State in the regional championship. UH finished ranked #30 in the final Collegiate Baseball Top 30 Poll. In 2009, the team started the season with one of the nation s toughest nonconference schedules, helping the team peak at No. 20 in the Baseball America poll, while posting an RPI in the top 10. Hawai i broke the single-season school home run record with 64 team homers, while Kolten Wong earned freshman all-america honors by five different publications. In 2006, Trapasso guided the team to a 45-17 record, going to its first NCAA Regional in 13 years. The team advanced to the regional final before falling to eventual national champion Oregon State. He pushed the team to a second-place finish in the WAC, losing the regular-season title by just a half a game. He also guided UH to a 16-5 record on the road, posting the most road wins in UH history and the third-highest winning percentage. And Trapasso got his share of recognition for the great season. He was named National Coach of the Year by the National Baseball Foundation and was a finalist for the College Baseball Insider National Coach of the Year award. He also earned his second WAC Coach of the Year honor in the past three seasons. The 2006 season was the breakthrough season Trapasso was looking for, but success didn t come overnight. After a challenging first season in 2002 while adjusting to his new surroundings coaching an inherited team, the St. Louis, Mo., native posted five straight winning seasons. In 2004, Trapasso was named the WAC Coach of the Year after guiding UH to its second straight 30-win season that included a big series win over No. 3 Rice. Following that successful season, he joined Team USA that summer as an assistant coach. He accompanied the team all over the world, helping them to win the gold medal at the World University Baseball Games in Tainan, Taiwan. In 2003, the Oklahoma State graduate guided Hawai i to the program s biggest turnaround to date, winning 14 more games than in 2002. The 2003 season is now the second-largest turnaround in school history as the 2006 team won 17 more games than they did the year before. Trapasso became just the second full-time Division I head baseball coach at Hawai i in 2001 after a successful seven-year run as an assistant coach at Georgia Tech. While with the Yellow Jackets, he became known as the top collegiate baseball assistant/recruiter in the country, as noted by Baseball America in January 2001. During his seven years at Georgia Tech, Trapasso was responsible for assembling some of the top recruiting classes in the nation. His classes were ranked fourth, 18th, seventh, first, 14th, 11th and 12th by Collegiate Baseball. Four players in his 1999 recruiting class were ranked among the nation s top 50 prep players by Baseball America, which touted the Yellow Jackets class as best of the draft era. In his first year there, he built a pitching staff virtually from the ground up, tutoring a freshman-dominated staff that earned 25 of Tech s 38 wins and helped to develop them into a unit that won 46 games in 1997, giving the Jackets their first of two ACC titles while he was there. The southpaw enjoyed a great collegiate career at Oklahoma State as one of the top pitchers from 1984-85. He was very instrumental in taking OSU to the College World Series in 1984 and 85. In 1984, Trapasso was the winning pitcher in the CWS opening game versus Maine, outdueling former major leaguer Billy Swift. The former Cowboy also led the Big Eight and was ranked fifth in the country with a 1.42 ERA in 1984. Trapasso was selected four times in the Major League Baseball Draft after graduating from Mehlville High School between 1982 and 85, before signing with the Braves after his final year of college. He is married to the former Catherine Grieshaber of Festus, Mo., and they have two sons, Michel and Matthew. Michel is in his second season as team manager for the Bows.
