ESA Initiative on Climate Change UNFCCC Conference 2007 Bali Action Plan parties should describe the status of their programmes for contributing observations of the essential climate variables (ECVs) to the international community Earth observation from space plays a vital role in this endeavour ESA through CEOS has committed to deliver global observations of ECV and associated products ESA has 30 years of archived data and will concentrate on those ECV which can be fed by ESA data
ESA Initiative on Climate Change The rationale of the proposed ESA initiative on climate change is: to systematically generate and distribute long-term series of Essential Climate Variables (ECV) to meet needs of UNFCCC and IPCC, based on ESA archived EO data ECV have been defined by GCOS: The proposed initiative therefore builds on a solid ground of internationally agreed requirements. The output shall be: ECV Records: Quantifying the state of the Climate system to (a) advance our knowledge of climate change, and (b) support work of UNFCCC and IPCC for climate change mitigation and adaptation
ESA Initiative on Climate Change INPUT FROM Long Term Archiving Programmes Multi-mission infrastructure Gather Re-processing ex archive (e.g. calibration) FEEDBACK LOOP: Deliver ECV generation (e.g. validation & bias) Exploit ECV assimilation & assessment OUTPUT TO International Climate Programmes EC & MS R&D Programmes IPCC Process, UNFCCC Show Education & Awareness
Outlook Next ESA Ministerial Conference 2008 3 main elements will be presented METEOSAT Third Generation (MTG) GMES Segment 2 Climate Change initiative
