Entry Task With your group members: Begin discussing the information you obtained from your research. Sketch on a sheet of paper the design your group plans for your poster.

Agenda Housekeeping Investigating the Animal Kingdom Posters Investigating the Animal Kingdom Tri-Fold The Animal Kingdom

Housekeeping Quiz 6 scheduled for Thursday, 15 Dec. Investigating Structure & Function in the Squid Lab on Friday, 16 Dec.

Investigating Animals Each group will research & bring information for Monday. A = Mollusks E = Cnidarians B = Poriferans F = Segmented Worms C = Arthropods G = Roundworms D = Echinoderms H = Flatworms Research the information according to the activity (pg. 343). Bring the information on Monday, 12 Dec. 2-3 pictures for your poster. Create posters with your group on Monday, 12 Dec. Only printed pictures may be glued or taped to the posters.

Investigating Animals Example: GROUP A

Investigating Animals Invertebrates Tri-Fold Graphic Organizer: Grab one foldable worksheet & pass the rest back. Use your classmates posters to complete your Invertebrates Tri-Fold Graphic Organizer. Then answer the questions located under Explain (pg. 343) Read The Animal Kingdom & Structures & Function of Feeding in Invertebrates. (pgs. 344-350) Highlight or underline key information.

Housekeeping Quiz 6 scheduled for Thursday, 15 Dec. Unit 18 workbook. Investigating Structure & Function in the Squid Lab on Friday, 16 Dec.

Investigating Animals Create invertebrate posters with your group. Only printed pictures & decorative details may be glued or taped to the posters. No typed print. Must be handwritten.

Investigating Animals Invertebrates Tri-Fold Graphic Organizer: Use your classmates posters to complete your Invertebrates Tri-Fold Graphic Organizer. Then answer the questions located under Explain (pg. 343)

Investigating Animals Many types of invertebrates are found in several marine ecosystems. For example, species of clams are found in coral reefs, mangrove forests, hydrothermal vent communities, salt marshes, & the deep sea. How can you explain this observation? Why is it important?

Investigating Animals Explain: 1. Which groups share the characteristics of radial symmetry? 2. Compare & contrast the annelids & platyhelminthes. 3. List three groups of mollusks & at least two examples of each. 4. Which phylum is most interesting to you? Why?

The Animal Kingdom Read The Animal Kingdom. (pgs. 344-345) Highlight or underline key information.

Feeding Techniques Read Structures & Function of Feeding in Invertebrates. (pgs. 345-350) Highlight or underline key information. In your notebook answer questions 2 & 3 (pg. 350)

Housekeeping Quiz 6 scheduled for tomorrow, 15 Dec. Unit 18 workbook. Investigating Structure & Function in the Squid Lab on Friday, 16 Dec.

The Animal Kingdom Read The Animal Kingdom. (pgs. 344-345) Highlight or underline key information.

The Animal Kingdom Within the ocean there are diverse physical & chemical features that support a wide variety of life. Invertebrates compose 97% of all organisms on Earth. How much of the remaining organisms are vertebrates?

The Animal Kingdom Vertebrate? Animals with a nerve chord along their backs. Vertebrates are described under the Phylum Chordata. There are four defining characteristics of the Phylum Chordata: Dorsal nerve chord Notochord Post-anal tail Pharyngeal slits

The Animal Kingdom There are four defining characteristics of the Phylum Chordata: Dorsal nerve chord: hollow nerve cord (becomes brain & spinal chord in vertebrates). Notochord: flexible rod that support dorsal nerve cord (bones protecting spinal chord in vertebrates). Post-anal tail: extension past anal opening (disappears in many adult vertebrates). Pharyngeal slits: openings between throat & outside environment (in mammals present in embryos).

The Animal Kingdom Tunicates & Salps are chordates that are not vertebrates, exist exclusively in the ocean. Why are these organisms classified as chordates instead of invertebrates? In their larval form they exhibit of the defining characteristics of the Phylum Chordata (nervous system disintegrates in adulthood). Because they are chordates they are more closely related to humans than any invertebrate.

The Animal Kingdom Discussion: Why might there be more animal phyla in the ocean than on land & water? What s surprising about being more closely related to a sea squirt than an octopus or other invertebrates?

Feeding Techniques Read Structures & Function of Feeding in Invertebrates. (pgs. 345-350) Highlight or underline key information. In your notebook answer questions 2 & 3 (pg. 350) Kahoot Link: https://getkahoot.com/ Name: Marine Quiz 6 Introduction to Marine Invertebrates

Feeding Techniques Discussion: What are some examples of invertebrates employing each of the strategies described in the first paragraph?

Feeding Techniques Discussion: Give examples of how specific structures of clams support the function of filter feeding. In which marine ecosystems would you expect to find filter feeders.

Feeding Techniques Discussion: What is the difference between deposit feeders & filter feeders? In which marine ecosystems would deposit feeding be a cmoon strategy?

MARINE SCIENCE Thursday 15 Dec 2016

Entry Task Take the next couple of minutes to review if needed.
