Introduction The McTavish Township prospecting project covers exploration work performed at the site of the historic Enterprise Mine in Pearl, McTavish Township in the Thunder Bay Mining District. The mining claim number is T,B. 1149137. One hundred-fifty tons of massive galena (bearing 5% copper) were mined there during the mid 1800's and marketable amethyst veins can be found on the property. Uranium on the property appears to be related to a late stage Fault in the proximal area. Previous work performed by me revealed the presence of silver in a wide calcite vein. I located the surface expression of the structure originally mined. It is.a massive galena vein which is 25 cm wide on surface and 5 to 7 feet wide at a depth of 180 feet. An historic gold assay of well mineralized material from the vein ran.33 opt. gold. Historically, hundreds of tons of lead ore were removed from two mine shafts along the fault zone. The size, depth, strike and dip of the ore body were well documented by T.L. Tanton in 1935. In his report, he recommended that " A further search for lateral extensions of the principal vein along the main fault would be warranted." The mining claim is situated in the 20 km wide amethyst belt in the Pearl area and numerous active mines are currently producing amethyst. Overburden removal between the two mine shafts has exposed 30m of an amethyst vein in which irregular vugs of gem-quality amethyst are present.

Location and Access The McTavish Twp. project area is located 2 km Northeast o f the Hamlet of Pearl, Ontario, 50 km Northeast o f t he City of Thunder Bay, in the Thunder Bay Mining District. The study area borders the North portion of mining lots D and C in McTavish Township, along the Eastern boundary of mining claim number 1120425. The mining claim in this study is T.B. 1149137 upon which are located the abandoned workings of the Enterprise Mine. The project area is accessed From the Trans Canada Highway From which a pipeline access road can be taken. The bush access road is about one quarter mile long and rough but the gravel base is very good, even while extensive parts of the road are submerged in water. The bush road Forks in two locations; the second left Fork leads directly to and terminates at the main concrete capped mine shaft. This mine shaft Fenced off with a chain link Fence. An alternate, less desireable access route may be taken From the Spruce River Road to the Dorion cutoff. The Dorion cutoff links the Spruce River Road to the Trans Canada Highway. From Dorion, the Trans Canada Highway can be taken south to Pearl. The bush access road is located 1.6 km north of Little Pearl Lake. Little Pearl Lake borders the Trans Canada highway on the east side of the highway just north of the hamlet of Pearl. The mining claim in this study is diagonally bisected by currently used Canadian National railway tracks. The main mine shaft on the property is within ten meters of the railway, 2.5
'miles southwest of AncliFF station. Geo logy T.L. Tanton [1934) described the geology of the local area in considerable detail. Mining lots "C" and "D" are underlain by gently-dipping Sibley sediments up to 40 Feet thick overlying pink granite. The sedimentary series includes sandstone, conglomerate, limestone, Finely laminated chert and red tuff. The sedimentary series overlap each other and contact the granitic intrusion towards the north. On mining lot "C" several mineralized veins are located in Faults. This particular Fault is in a Four Foot wide diabase dike. In 1865 a well-mineralized vein was located on this property. The vein material consisted of calcite, white quartz, galena, chalcopyrite, amethyst and barite, in a diabase dike occupying a large Fault. A bulk sample of the mineralized vein material was analyzed and returned the Following values: Lead......................... 41. 847, Copper........................5.4054 Silver......3.2 opt. Gold...,...0.33 opt. M.A Vos [1376) described the general geology of a different amethyst vein in the same Township on Dzuba's property. Dzuba's vein was traced For BOO m through lot 5. V os [1976) states that the vein was located in a Fault; the north wall was composed of granite and the southeast wall was Sibley quartz sandstone and a red coloured Fragmental. Most of the vein was composed of coarse calcite and some amethyst was associated with barite. Enriched disseminated seams of chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite can be
Found in the calcite vein. The description of Dzuba's geological setting is identical to my observations of the Enterprise Mine. Work Done During the course of my exploration of this property, an extended effort was made to locate any Further outcrops in the vicinity of the mine shafts. A scintillometer was used to delineate the orientation of the radioactive highs previously documented From this location. I surveyed the vicinity of the mine site using a scintillometer to locate the most radioactive areas (up to 17,000 c.p.m.). Overburden depth determination was done with a lining bar. Based on the results of these efforts, a large track backhoe was used to strip the overburden to trace the linear trend of the scintillometer readings. Rock specimens were taken From the best-mineralized portions of the vein For analysis. One day was spent plugger drilling along the vein. Several days were spent removing overburden by pick and shovel. Clearing of the remaining overburden revealed the presence of an amethyst vein and two massive galena veins. Hand trenching by hammer and chisel was performed along the newly-discovered amethyst vein. An effort 'was made to carefully Follow the amethyst vein along strike and down dip to Fully explore the nature and extent of it. About 200 we 11-mineralized samples were visually inspected with a 16 X hand lens. Results and Recommendations A 30m by 20m mineralized lens of calcite, quartz, diabase 5-
breccia and Fragmented Sibley sediments is now exposed between the two mine shafts on the Enterprise Mine property. As a direct result of removing the overburden in the vicinity of the two mine shafts, the locations of two massive galena veins and an amethyst vein were discovered. The massive galena veins outcrop on the surface of the main vein, dipping steeply to the southeast. The galena analysis is 42/S Pb and 5/i Cu. The veins are up to 30 cm wide at the surface and appear to be virtually continuous along strike with little wall rock alteration. A high scintillometer reading indicated that the galena veins are possibly continuous in lateral extent to the western margin of this claim, a distance of over 300 m. Enriched zones of disseminated chalcopyrite and sphalerite can be Found in various parts of the main calcite l ens. Overburden removal exposed a 30 m long portion of an amethyst vein. The amethyst colour, Form and grade are extremely variable within this section. The width of the amethyst vein on surface ranges up to 40 cm. Irregular vugs along the amethyst vein contain high grade, gem quality dark purple amethyst. Some of the other adjacent vugs have been reheated at some point, rendering the amethyst crystals colorless. The crystal sizes Found so Far range up to 1.5 inches in diameter at the base. The current study has merely scratched the surface of the amethyst deposit at the Enterprise Mine. Further work in the way of drilling and blasting must be carried out on the amethyst vein to bring it into Full production. Some of the material has been test Facetted and has turned out to be very attractive.
