Wave Terminology We call these plane waves because they have constant phase over a set of planes. These are the equiphase surfaces of the wave. We call these plane waves uniform because the amplitude is constant in the equiphase plane. The wave is travelling in the +z direction as shown in the last slides. The wave is linearly polarized in the x-direction since at any point in space the tip of the E-field vector traces out a line segment along the x axis.
