PREFACE Since its establishment in 1967, the Geological Society of Malaysia has been a major contributor to the advancement of knowledge in the geosciences at the national and regional levels. The Society has organised numerous seminars and conferences and channeled papers from these meetings to its series on Bulletin of the Geological Society of Malaysia. Bulletin 53 is a collection of 19 papers based on basic, applied and policy research on geoscience. Five papers were presented at the National Geoscience Conference 2006, held on 12-13 June in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. Fourteen are from National Geoscience Conference 2007, held at Universiti Malaysia Sabah on 8-9 June 2007. The Society gratefully acknowledges all the authors for their contributions, the reviewers for making time to improve the contributions and the organising committee of the two conferences for facilitating publication of the papers.
