FOUR-ON-THE SNOW Newsletter A publication of Tucker Sno-Cat Corporation Made in the USA since 1942 NO SNOW TOO DEEP NO ROAD TOO STEEP December 2017 Volume 9 Issue 12 This month Sterling says..we are finally catching up on service, so call if you need help. Another thing to check when you are under your Sno-Cat vehicle are that the weep holes in the bottom of the lower frame rails and the back cross support for the rear deck, make sure they are clear. These 1/8 holes are designed to let any moisture out so that it does not freeze and possibly expand the metal tubing. Look for the main frame holes to be in the forward section near the transfer case supports. On another subject, we offer a washer kit for the windshield wiper that is pretty easy to install and can really come in handy during the Fall and Spring when you could be traveling through mud. On the subject of wipers, if you are replacing the blades with a stiffer version (with a bow in it), then make sure the spring in the arm assembly is strong enough to hold the full wiper length against the glass. HELPFUL HINT TO PREVENT TRACK/WHEEL WEAR We have seen bogie wheels & drive cogs prematurely worn because of tracks traveling on side banks for extended distances. Tucker Sno-Cat recommends to operate your tracks on a flat surface. Track and wheel wear can be caused by an operator driving a track along a side bank (see illustration). Sno-Cat vehicles equipped with a front blade can prepare a level surface for the tracks to travel on. Sno-Cat vehicles not equipped with a front blade will need to be conscious of the terrain they are traveling on. Side bank wheels Level Surface Tracks / cogs Page 2 of 5
THE COLD..Cold conditions are back! According to the Farmers Almanac s 200-year-old formula, this winter is expected to be a bit more normal as far as the temperatures are concerned, especially in the eastern and central parts of the country chiefly those areas to the east of the Rocky Mountains with many locations experiencing above-normal precipitation. THE DRY.For the western third of the country mainly those areas west of the Continental Divide the overall winter will not be as wet as last year. Our forecasts are pointing to a return to more normal winter conditions in regard to both temperatures and precipitation. This is not to say that there won t be occasional bouts of heavy precipitation sweeping in from the Pacific, or shots of cold air pushing south through western Canada (because what s winter without those?), but these should be balanced out by spells of dry and mild weather. THE WET.Break out the space heaters, umbrellas, and warm socks, because the Southeast will see below normal winter temperatures with an unseasonable chill reaching as far south as the Gulf Coast, with above-average precipitation. From the Great Lakes into the Northeast, snowier-than-normal conditions are expected. We can hear the skiers, boarders, and snowmobilers cheering from here! Page 3 of 5
