Abstrct We study the existence of Riemnn Stieltjes integrls of bounded functions ginst given integrtor. We re lso concerned with the possibility of computing the resulting integrls by mens of relted Riemnn integrls. In prticulr, we present new generliztion to the well known formul for continuous integrnds nd continuously differentible integrtors. 1 Introduction Let f : [,b] R be continuous nd let G : [,b] R hve bounded vrition over the intervl [, b]. A stndrd result [3, Exercise 30 (g), pge 281] then gurntees tht f(x)dg(x) (1.1) exists in the Riemnn Stieltjes sense. Moreover, the formul f(x)dg(x) = f(x)g (x)dx (1.2) holds true if G hs continuous derivtive in [,b], thus reducing the computtion of Riemnn Stieltjes integrls to Riemnn ones. 1
We cn find deeper informtion in Stromberg [3, Exercise 30 (k), pge 281]: the formul (1.2) is fulfilled when f is Riemnn integrble nd G is bsolutely continuous. This result lens on the Fundmentl Theorem of Clculus for the Lebesgue integrl, nd the proof suggested by Stromberg uses pproximtions of f by step functions. Notice tht, in this cse, the integrl in the right hnd side of (1.2) is Lebesgue integrl which need not be, in generl, Riemnn integrl. In this note we re concerned with the twofold problem of the existence of (1.1) in the Riemnn Stieltjes sense nd the possibility of computing it vi (1.2) when f is merely bounded function (not necessrily Lebesgue mesurble). Obviously, the conditions over the integrtor G hve to be reenforced. Specificlly, in this pper we prove the following result. Theorem 1.1 Let f : [,b] R be bounded, let g : [,b] R be Riemnn integrble nd let G(x) = c+ x g(y)dy (x [,b]) for some c R. A neccessry nd sufficient condition for the function f to be Riemnn Stieltjes integrble with respect to G over [,b] is tht the product fg be Riemnn integrble over [, b] nd, in tht cse, f(x)dg(x) = f(x)g(x) dx. (1.3) TheproofofTheorem1.1, whichoccupies section 2, isbsedonthefollowing shrp version of the men vlue theorem for Riemnn integrls. Theorem 1.2 [2, Corollry 4.6] If h : [,b] R is Riemnn integrble on [,b] then there exist points c 1, c 2 (,b) such tht h(c 1 )(b ) h(x)dx h(c 2 )(b ). Even though our conditions on the function f re very generl, our proofs turn out to be quite esy (this fct being nother interesting point). In prticulr, we remin in the relm of Riemnn integrtion theory. 2 Proof of Theorem 1.1 We need the following lemm on mixed Riemnn sums (see [1] for more informtion on mixed sums). Its proof is very esy, but we include it for completeness nd for the convenience of the reder. 2
Lemm 2.1 Let f : [,b] R be bounded nd let g : [,b] R be Riemnn integrble. If the product fg is Riemnn integrble on [,b] then for ech ε > 0 there exists δ > 0 such tht for every prtition = x 0 < x 1 < < x n = b whose norm is less thn δ we hve k )g(z k )(x k ) f(x)g(x)dx < ε, for ny choice of points y k,z k [,x k ] (k = 1,2,...,n). Proof. For given prtition = x 0 < x 1 < < x n = b nd points y k,z k [,x k ] (k = 1,2,...,n) we hve k )g(z k ) (x k ) f(x)g(x)dx k )[g(z k ) g(y k )](x k ) + k )g(y k )(x k ) f(x)g(x)dx where sup x b f(x) osc(g,[,x k ])(x k ) + k )g(y k )(x k ) osc(g,[,x k ]) = sup g(x) x x k inf g(x) x x k f(x)g(x)dx, is the oscilltion of g in [,x k ]. Since g nd fg re Riemnn integrble, the lst term in the previous inequlity is s smll s we wish if the norm of the prtition is sufficiently smll (nd this does not depend on the choice of y k,z k [,x k ]). Proof of Theorem 1.1. We first show tht the condition is sufficient, so we ssume tht fg is Riemnn integrble on [,b]. Let ε > 0 be fixed nd let δ > 0 be s in Lemm 2.1. We re going to prove tht for ny prtition 3
of [,b], sy P = {x 0,x 1,...,x n }, with norm less thn δ, nd ny choice of points y k [,x k ] (k = 1,2,...,n), we hve k )[G(x k ) G( )] f(x)g(x)dx < ε, (2.4) thus finishing the first prt of the proof of Theorem 1.1. Let P nd the y k s be s bove. Theorem 1.2 gurntees tht for ech k {1,2,...,n} there is some z k (,x k ) such tht k ) Hence k )[G(x k ) G( )] = g(y)dy k )g(z k )(x k ). < k ) g(y)dy k )g(z k )(x k ) We deduce in n nlogous wy tht k )[G(x k ) G( )] > so (2.4) obtins. f(x)g(x)dx+ε (by Lemm 2.1). f(x)g(x)dx ε, We now prove tht the condition is necessry, nd therefore we ssume tht f is Riemnn Stieltjes integrble with respect to G over [,b]. Let us consider n rbitrry prtition = x 0 < x 1 < < x n = b nd rbitrry points y k [,x k ] (k = 1,2,...,n). We hve k )g(y k )(x k ) k )[G(x k ) G( )] (2.5) [ ] xk = k ) g(y k )(x k ) g(y)dy sup f(x) x b g(y k)(x k ) g(y)dy. (2.6) 4
For ech k {1,2,...,n} we hve inf g(x)(x k ) x x k g(y)dy nd, since y k [,x k ], we deduce tht g(y k)(x k ) g(y)dy [ sup g(x) x k inf g(x) x x k = osc(g,[,x k ])(x k ). sup g(x)(x k ), x x k ] (x k ) Going with this informtion bck to the inequlity (2.5) (2.6), we get k )g(y k )(x k ) k )[G(x k ) G( )] sup f(x) x b osc(g,[,x k ])(x k ), which tends to zero when the norm of the prtition tends to zero (nd this does not depend on the y k s). To sumup, if thenormof theprtition issufficiently smll thenriemnn sums of fg re s close s we wish to Riemnn Stieltjes sums of f with respect to G, which, in turn, re s close s we wish to the corresponding Riemnn Stieltjes integrl. Hence Riemnn sums of fg re s close s we wish to the Riemnn Stieltjes integrl of f with respect to G provided tht the norm of the prtition is sufficiently smll. 3 Concluding remrks Theorem 1.1 is not prticulr cse to [3, Exercise 30 (k)], which requires f to be Riemnn integrble on [,b]. Exmples in the conditions of Theorem 1.1 which do not fulfill the ssumptions in [3, Exercise 30 (k)] cn be esily constructed: it suffices to consider bounded functions f which re not Riemnn integrble on subintervl of [, b] where g is lmost everywhere equl to zero. If we combine Theorem 1.1 with the integrtion by prts formul for the Riemnn Stieltjes integrl, see [3, Exercise 30 (h)], we obtin the following new sufficient condition for Riemnn Stieltjes integrbility. 5
Corollry 3.1 In the conditions of Theorem 1.1, the function G is Riemnn Stieltjes integrble with respect to f over [,b] nd G(x)df(x) = G(b)f(b) G()f() g(x)f(x) dx. Finlly, Theorem 1.1 nd Corollry 3.1 yield the following more symmetric test. Corollry 3.2 Let α, β : [,b] R be Riemnn integrble functions. If one of them is n indefinite Riemnn integrl, then either of them is Riemnn Stieltjes integrble with respect to the other over [, b] nd the corresponding Riemnn Stieltjes integrls reduce to Riemnn integrls.
