This forms molecules, such as chlorine (Cl 2 ). Compounds are formed when different elements chemically combine in fixed proportions via bonds, e.g. water (H 2 O).

When an atom becomes an ion, it loses or gains electrons. The resulting ion has either a positive or negative charge. Compounds that contain ions are called ionic compounds. These compounds are usually formed by a reaction between a metal and a non-metal. Electrons are transferred from each metal atom to each non-metal atom. The metal and the non-metal atoms form ions with completely full outer shells and become stable.

A symbol equation must be balanced to give the correct ratio of reactants and products.
