2016 Monarch Report M onarch butterfly populations are in decline nationwide and Boise Parks & Recreation (BPR) has stepped up to take action, with the launch of Parks, Monarchs, and Milkweeds. Parks, Monarchs, and Milkweeds is a citizen science program aimed at protecting and enhancing monarch habitat, as well as monitoring monarch breeding activity and milkweed health in Boise parks. To prepare for the launch of Parks, Monarchs, and Milkweeds, BPR staff and volunteers spent much of 2015 identifying and mapping milkweed patches, as well as developing support material for the program. There are six species of milkweed native to Idaho, however, showy milkweed is the only species that has been found in Boise parks. That aside, we were pleasantly surprised by the amount of milkweed found in Boise parks and see room for future habitat enhancement and development. As such, BPR is working with several volunteer groups to seed and plant milkweed at numerous locations through the fall of 2016. Showy Milkweed in Ann Morrison Park The launch of the citizen science component of Parks, Monarchs, and Milkweeds began ominously with a report of an unusual ice storm in the monarch s overwintering range in central Mexico, just as the spring migration was set to begin. This occurred after conservationists cheered a surge in monarch populations, with reports of the population having tripled over the previous year. Although exact losses are not known and initial reports were dire, only time will tell the impact the storm had. Nonetheless, BPR kicked off its program on May 21, 2016, with optimism and a crew of energetic volunteers. We began the effort with a training course that instructed volunteers on what to look for and how to identify the different development stages of both the monarch butterfly and milkweed plant. Volunteers were also provided the opportunity to select which milkweed stands they wanted to keep tabs on, with available locations in Kathryn Albertson Park, Ann Morrison Park, and along the Bethine Church River Trail. Volunteers were in the field from May through September and visited their adopted milkweed sites regularly, committing over 120 hours and submitting over 250 data reports. All of which have been compiled for inclusion in a national database, managed by the Xerces Society. The collected information will help scientists determine the migration pattern of monarchs west of the Rockies, as well as study breeding activity. Overall, June proved to be the busiest month for monarch activity. Volunteers counted numerous eggs as well as larvae, with most adult sightings occurring in late June. There was little to no larvae activity in either July and August, at any of the monitored sites. August and September also showed no reports of adult sightings. Kathryn Albertson Park provided the highest number of eggs, larvae, and adults. The 2016 Monarch Report Page 1

Male monarch nectaring on milkweed plant in Ann Morrison Park. larvae were seen at multiple sites within Kathryn Albertson Park throughout June and July. Ann Morrison Park was busy with eggs and adults, but no larvae were seen this season. The Bethine Church River Trail has milkweed scattered throughout the path, however, there was little monarch activity reported. The little bit of activity that was seen on Bethine Church was from mid June through mid July. Kathryn Albertson Park Kathryn Albertson volunteers found 134 eggs, 8 larvae and saw 6 adult monarchs during the season. Of the 134 eggs observed, 73 of those eggs were seen in June. The ratio of eggs to larvae demonstrates the difficulties larvae were having, maturing into pupae. Some speculate that predators of the larvae such as spiders, ants, and beetles, could be a factor. The adults were seen in flight or nectaring in the late morning to early afternoon when the temperature ranged from 75 85 F. Ann Morrison Park Those monitoring in Ann Morrison reported 59 eggs, 0 larvae and 11 adult monarchs. Almost all of the eggs observed, 47 of 59, were seen in June, along with 10 out of the 11 adult monarchs. This large milkweed patch in Ann Morrison is on east facing slope with a lot of sun, resulting in early milkweed growth compared to the other sites. The early growth and the high numbers of eggs and adults in June, leads one to surmise that this site may be one of the first places monarchs migrate to and start breeding activity in Boise. However, monarch migration paths and timelines in Idaho are largely unknown. It will be only through continued monitoring, that we ll be able to definitively draw this conclusion. Bethine Church River Trail The Bethine Church River Trail saw 11 eggs, 6 larvae and 1 adult monarch. The scattered milkweed along the trail range from full sun to partial shade, and from individual plants to large patches. The monarch activity reported occurred throughout June but dwindled from mid July to the end of the season. As we continue to monitor the trail, we hope to see more substantial monarch activity. Boise Parks & Recreation is committed to the conservation and preservation of the monarch butterfly and its habitat. Thanks to all our dedicated volunteers for your hard work making the initial season of Parks, Monarchs, and Milkweeds a success. Through the coming years, we hope to see both the program and monarch population grow in Boise! 2016 Monarch Report Page 2
