NC Geospatial Data Archiving Project 1. Frequency of Capture of Geospatial Data We seek your advice and experience in creating geospatial data snapshots for your archives -- versions of vector data and associated attributes for your permanent records collections. Please take 10-15 minutes on up to 28 questions. This survey is not intended to address routine backups that overwrite data for purposes such as disaster recovery. This research project, including a summary of all the responses, will serve rth Carolina well to address digital preservation in a partnership with the Library of Congress and other supportive collaborators. For more information on how rth Carolina is working on issues concerning digital geospatial information preservation, see http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/ncgdap/partners.html Page 1 of 12

NC Geospatial Data Archiving Project 2. Capturing Snapshots of Geospatial Data Please answer all questions only as they relate to data snapshots created for long-term retention, not to regular backups. * 1. Do you create and retain periodic snapshots of any vector datasets for long-term retention and archiving? Yes This question is required. If skip to section 10, question 28 (page 11). Page 2 of 12

3. Cadastral Data Questions 2. How often are snapshots of PARCEL geometry made for long-term retention? (choose frequency closest to your practice) Annually Every 6 Months Quarterly Monthly Weekly or Daily t Saved 3. In what formats are PARCEL geometry snapshots saved? (check all that apply) Shapefile Geodatabase Arc Coverage Arc Interchange (e00) 4. Does this involve a data conversion from the native format? (e.g., Geodatabase feature class export to shapefile) Yes 5. Are PARCEL attributes (such as tax record information) saved with the PARCEL geometry data? Yes, as attached attributes Yes, in a separate table Page 3 of 12

4. Street Centerline Questions 6. How often are snapshots of STREET CENTERLINE geometry made for long-term retention? (choose frequency that is closest to your practice) Annually Every 6 Months Quarterly Monthly Weekly or Daily t Saved 7. In what formats are STREET CENTERLINE geometry snapshots saved? (check all that apply) Shapefile Geodatabase Arc Coverage Arc Interchange (e00) 8. Does this involve a data conversion from the native format? (e.g., MapInfo format to Shapefile) Yes 9. Are STREET attributes saved with the STREET CENTERLINE geometry? Yes, as attached attributes Yes, in a separate table Page 4 of 12

5. Jurisdictional Boundary Data Questions 10. For which of the following JURISDICTIONAL BOUNDARY datasets do you create snapshots? (check all that apply) County Boundaries Municipal Boundaries Extraterritorial Jurisdictions ne 11. How often are snapshots of JURISDICTIONAL BOUNDARY data made for long-term retention? (choose frequency closest to your practice) Any time an official boundary change occurs Annually Every 6 Months Quarterly Monthly Weekly or Daily Page 5 of 12

12. In what formats are JURISDICTIONAL BOUNDARY data snapshots saved? Shapefile Geodatabase Arc Coverage Arc Interchange (e00) 13. Does this involve a data conversion from the native format? (e.g., Geodatabase feature class to shapefile) Yes Page 6 of 12

6. Zoning Data Questions 14. How often are snapshots of ZONING geometry made for long-term retention? (choose frequency closest to your practice) Annually Every 6 Months Quarterly Monthly Weekly or Daily t Saved 15. In what formats are ZONING geometry snapshots saved? (check all that apply) Shapefile Geodatabase Arc Coverage Arc Interchange (e00) 16. Does this involve a conversion from the native format? (e.g., MapInfo to Shapefile) Yes 17. Are ZONING attributes saved with ZONING geometry? Yes, as attached attributes Yes, in a separate table Page 7 of 12

7. Current Practices -- Data and History 18. Please list or summarize any OTHER DATA layers you are archiving for long-term retention, if any. 19. How far back does your archive of vector data snapshots go? Page 8 of 12

8. Current Practices -- Metadata and Storage 20. What METADATA types are saved with the snapshot data? FGDC format Locally defined metadata NC OneMap metadata starter block ne 21. In what STORAGE environment are the snapshot data saved? Tape CD DVD External Hard Drive Server or Online Storage 22. Where are the snapshot data stored? Onsite Offsite Both Onsite and Offsite Page 9 of 12

9. Current Practices -- Use and Access Uses of historic data and public access. 23. What local business RULES and/or USES drive the long-term retention of vector data in your jurisdiction? (check all that apply) Information technology policy Records retention policy Tax administration rules Land use change analysis Resolution of legal issues Historic mapping 24. Do you provide PUBLIC ACCESS to snapshots of vector data? Yes, all of the files Yes, some of the files ne Page 10 of 12

10. Historic Aerial Photos and Maps These questions relate to orthophotos, aerial photos and hardcopy maps. 25. How are historic (superceded) digital ORTHOPHOTOS being stored? (check all that apply) Tape CD DVD External Hard Drive Server or Online Storage t Stored 26. Have you created digital versions of any of the following: Historic hardcopy maps, scanned only Historic hardcopy maps, scanned and georeferenced Aerial photos, scanned only Aerial photos, scanned and georeferenced ne 27. Please add any additional comments, clarifications or questions: Page 11 of 12

11. The Last Page Thank you for completing this survey. When you hit "DONE" you will see results to date in a separate window. As always, your help is much appreciated. For more information on how rth Carolina is working on issues concerning digital geospatial information preservation, see http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/ncgdap/partners.html 28. Would you like to participate in FORUMS concerning preservation of local geospatial data? Yes t sure Page 12 of 12
