Paper I Gender and Society Patriarchy as ideology and practice, status of women in society, nature Vs gender, sexual division of labour, socialization and gender roles, socio-historical perspective of gender Prevailing feminist theories, feminism and post-structuralism, feminism and post modernism; gender and stratification: caste and gender, class and gender Status of women in India: pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial, demographic profile of gender-gap (Census, National Sample Surveys), gender and polity, gender and violence, women s employment and their earnings; gender and development: health, education and land rights Women s empowerment, women s movements, liberalization, globalization and their impact on women, role of the state and NGOs
