USGS POD implementation in USGS Cloud to Support US Topo Production 2017 Esri User Conference 16 June 2017 Bob Davis lrdavis@usgs.gov 573-308-3554 William J. Marken, GSP wmarken@usgs.gov 573-308-3532 U.S. Department of the Interior U.S. Geological Survey
Production Milestones Public launch of US Topo (December 2009) Completed US Topo for the 48 contiguous states in September 2012 totaling nearly 54,000 new maps Redesign in 2013 improved legibility and symbology Second round of US Topo map completion for continental U.S. completed in September 2015 Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and US Virgin Islands added into second round production in 2013 Alaska production started in 2013
US Topo The USGS topographic map product Built from The National Map data Digital ISO-32000 Geospatial PDF Available free on the Web Image base Core feature layers Regular updates
US Topo Maps Content 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 Feature Content Ortho-rectified Aerial Imagery Roads (Commercial Source) Names Elevation Contours Hydrography State/County/USFS Boundaries Runways Woodland Railroads Public Land Survey System (PLSS) Fire Stations Hospitals Schools Military Boundaries Cemeteries Post Offices Shaded Relief USFS Trails FWS Boundaries State Capitals Police Stations Correctional Facilities IMBA Trails National Scenic Trails FWS Wetlands (Freshwater Emergent and Freshwater Forested/Shrub Wetland types only)) Road Source Changed to Census TIGER NPS Pilot Great Smoky Mt NP ( NPS Service Facilities, Picnic Areas, Lookout Towers, Outdoor Theater / Amphitheaters, Visitor / Information Centers, Trailheads and Campgrounds) GNIS Landform polygons for labeling valleys, arroyos, ridges, and summits
Strategy Evolution Data layers added as they become available in The National Map Features added as technical processes are perfected Three-year revision cycle Linked to US Department of Agriculture s National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) image acquisition schedule
Data Sources The National Map Transportation roads from US Census TIGER files and US Forest Service Boundaries National Boundaries Dataset (via partnerships) Names - Geographic Names Information System Orthoimage National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) Elevation 3D Elevation Program Hydrography National Hydrography Dataset Structures National Structures Dataset (includes crowdsourcing) Woodland National Land Cover Dataset Other Sources Public Land Survey System Bureau of Land Management Trails National Scenic Trails, IMBA, US Forest Service
Product Characteristics Traditional USGS 7.5-minute topographic quadrangle format Nationally consistent and complete Can be used electronically or plotted Reference systems with traditional annotation: Latitude/Longitude U.S. National Grid
Product Characteristics GeoPDF (From 2009-2017) A TerraGo Technologies published extension to the Adobe PDF file format Geospatial PDF (maps published 2017 and beyond) An ISO 32000 (PDF v1.7) compliant format File size varies - about 18 to 35 Mb Georeferenced Locations defined in terms of map projection and coordinate systems Layered (select layers, turn layers on/off) Limited interactive capabilities, free tools
Modernization of US Topo Production System Production System Modernization 2017 New system (Product on Demand (POD) produces maps in an ISO 32000 (PDF 1.7) compliant geospatial PDF Adheres to the US Topo product standard for scale, extent, projection, datum, coordinate system and grid information Reproduces cartography, page layout, marginalia, layering, Table of Contents, metadata and other characteristics Cloud based Enables future capability for dynamic mapping: supporting multiple map scales, multiple map formats, custom footprints, and custom content from TNM and other sources
MOD to POD: Changes for Digital Use Tools > Analysis > Geospatial Location Tool to initialize readout Latitude / Longitude only (no MGRS readout) TerraGo Toolbar does not function with new geospatial PDF USGS might pursue an alternative toolbar solution in the future depending upon user feedback Coordinate readout is not turned on by default, and it is only available for Latitude / Longitude Access Readout via Tools > Analysis > Geospatial Location Tool
MOD to POD: Changes for Printing POD Marginalia Slight change in the distance between data frame and marginalia results in slight increase in print area Marginalia no longer aligned exactly with data frame No impacts are anticipated for printing maps produced in the new geospatial PDF Not aligned Larger distance from data frame Larger distance Not aligned
Future Migrate US Topo Operational System MOD to POD QTR-2-3 FY17 POD in the Cloud INPUT CARTO DESIGN MXDs / Label Rules -- Annotation OUTPUT: US Topo Layered geospatial PDF Standard Content / AOIs Standard Collared Layout INPUT TNM data INPUT web services DYNAMIC OUTPUT: Maps, Tiles and Data Multiple formats (incl open) Custom Content / AOIs Collared / collarless tiles Multi-scale Continued R&D: Future Plans

USGS POD Future Goals Dynamic Mapping: POD prototype on external USGS Cloud Locked down for small set of end users (e.g. USFS) Expose out-of-the box POD capability Multi-scale Dynamic Area Dynamic Page Add GeoTIFF and Map Package Export Formats Incorporate 100K template Continue with Cartographic attribute research Continue with auto-label research
US Topo Future Goals Committed to completing the third 3 year cycle (2016 2018) Significantly more recreational trails, especially in National Forests Wild and Scenic Rivers Federally designated Wilderness areas PLSS coverage for all PLSS states Improved text placement for natural landform features Continued enhancements to Structures content Complete US Topo coverage for Alaska by 2022 Continuing Research Enhancements to Topo TNM Style Template (https://viewer.nationalmap.gov/tools/topotemplate/) Alternative formats, scales, and customized content/aois
