WMO for UN New Urban Agenda Urban Integrated Services and Multi-Hazard Early Warning Systems Gregory R. Carmichael
WMO WMO Priority: Urbanization - Research and services for megacities and large urban complexes Goal: Integrated Urban Weather, Water, Environment and Climate Services to address Urban Hazards and Risks including: poor air quality; extreme heat/cold and human thermal stress, extreme local winds; sand and dust storms; wild fires and smog haze; urban floods; sea-level rise; energy and water sustainability; climate change - 75% GHG emission associated public health problems caused by the above Through research to service actions across WMO (GAW, WWRP, WCRP) and beyond
Growing number of applications/services involve atmospheric composition Simplified impact cascade for heat/air pollution. Blue/green shows cascade of physical processes and relevant parameters. Beige/brown are 1 st & 2 nd order socio-economic impacts. Red shows human impacts.

WMO Sand and Dust Storm Warning Advisory and Assessment System (SDS-WAS) Objectives: To enhance the ability of countries to deliver: timely and quality forecasts of sand and dust storms, observations of aerosols: sand and dust information and knowledge to users through an international partnership of research and operational experts and users Three Regional Nodes (North Africa, Europe and Middle East Node, (East) Asian Node and Pan-American Node) provide SDS global and regional forecasts for 72 hours. First Operation Centre opened in Spain: The Barcelona Dust Forecast Centre was inaugurated in 2014. Steering Committee: to ensure the global coordination activity on SDS-WAS and collaboration with other Agencies (UNEP, UNCCD, WHO). Web: http://www.wmo.int/sdswas
Regional Vegetation Fire and Smoke Pollution Warning and Advisory System (VFSP-WAS) Interested countries are welcome!
