High Sensitivity S Pol Radar dual-pol Doppler radar is needed to monitor the clear air boundaries that initiate convection, the descending downdraft core that generates the strong downdraft winds and then the hazardous surface winds

Hi-Resolution dual-doppler radars

Integrated Observing System Frequent Soundings Wind Profiler Radiometer RASS for temperature Ceilometer Surface Met Obs Soundings

Buoys are needed for monitoring the lake conditions

Atmospheric Radiation Measurement the Aerosol Observing System, the microwave radiometer profiler, the balloon-borne sounding system, micropulse lidar, the total sky imager, Vaisala ceilometer, radar wind profiler, W-band cloud radar, Ka-band and W-band scanning cloud radars, the Doppler lidar, AERI system, Infrared Thermometer, ECOR system, Meteorological Instrumentation, optical rain gauge, tower camera and AMF3 C-band polarimetric radar. Climate Research

Post-Meeting Ojbectives LVB-HyNEWS 1. Develop a Sev Wx Nowcasting Demonstration Project (SWNDP) using global and regional data for all of LVB and multi-purposes (severe wx, aviation, agriculture, public health, diaster risk reduction) 2. Conduct a Field Project for Understanding and Verification and Validation of the SWNDP, HyVic and Thorpex HIW 3. Conduct Underpinning science to understand climate variability/change, improve climate predictability and to improve the projections, support decision making 4. Enhance the monitoring network for climate, weather and nowcaster including over the lake and its sustainability

AMCOMET WMO Initiative The African Ministers Cooperation in Meteorology (AMCOMET) is an over-arching initiative that addresses the meteorological issues related to all of Africa at the highest political level. The AMCOMET objectives: Increased recognition of NHMSs role at political level Improved climate risk management for the protection of life and property. Increased safety on land, on water and in the air. Enhanced quality of life. Enhanced cooperation among African countries to strengthen NMHSs.

LVB-HyNEWS is proposed as a demonstration project of AMCOMET (GFCS)

EAC proposed to conduct a donor meeting for LVB-HyNEWS consortium of projects. Envision multiple donor meetings

Task Force Membership Paul Joe Fred Semazzi Alexander Baklanov John Eza (Uganda) Hamza Kabelwa (TZ) Samuel Mwangi (Kenya) Rwanda N. Godefroid (Burundi) Richard T (ACLE) Jim Wilson, Rita Roberts, John Marsham, Rosalind Cornforth, Caroline Bain, Estelle de Coning,...

Next Steps (revised) Focal Points identified and authorized to help prepare research proposal/donor bids Proposal for a Nowcasting System within SWFDP framework Need to increase knowledge of nowcasting (capacity building) Need to refine concept of the Nowcast System Need to conduct stakeholder meeting Need to prepare donor requests Need to engage HIWeather, Lake Model, USP,
