MapGuide is used to provide three different versions of VanMap, and Map is used as our primary data-creation tool. The core is Oracle Spatial which is accessed on a live basis by both MapGuide and Map. We have also built a number of business applications on top of VanMap which provide a range of functionality for our staff. These include applications for notification, view preservation height calculations, cemetery viewing, custom mapping, thematic mapping, and query building, thereby expanding the role of VanMap from primarily a data-viewing environment to a dynamic business tool. About the Speaker: Jonathan Mark is in the Information Technology Department in the Corporate Services Group at the City of Vancouver. Jonathan has been the City's GIS manager since 1990. In this role, he and his Team are responsible for the City's corporate GIS infrastructure (core software, hardware, and databases) as well as the VanMap implementation. Jonathan's work with the City has also included responsibility for systems in the Health Department, Property Division, and Stores. Prior to joining the City in 1984, Jonathan taught in the Faculty of Commerce at the University of British Columbia, having obtained a Ph.D. in Economics in 1977. jonathan.mark@vancouver.ca

Presentation Objectives Describe Enterprise GIS Describe Vancouver s GIS environment Detail the VanMap (MapGuide) environment Describe directions for MapGuide & VanMap Demonstrate VanMap Autodesk University 2005 4 Enterprise Implementation Defined Organizations acting as a whole, moving with common purpose in a defined direction to implement an application Implies sharing of core set of data across an organization with corresponding shared responsibilities More common in context of umbrella organization (local government or large utility) Autodesk University 2005 5 Enterprise Implementations Enterprise systems integrate Business processes Data People Sharing of data to increase efficiencies and reduce data costs for participants The benefits of having a single authoritative source Objective is to provide a single organizational view Autodesk University 2005 6
Enterprise versus Large Enterprise implementations can be in large or small organizations Enterprise and Large are not synonymous Autodesk University 2005 7 Why Discuss Enterprise GIS Implementations? The term is being used more More organizations deploying centrally managed GIS GIS becoming more common throughout organizations and hence more common in the organization The increasing role of decentralized responsibilities centrally managed environment Autodesk University 2005 8 Why Pursue Enterprise Systems? To achieve organizational harmony through integration of: Standard processes and procedures Reduced data duplication and errors Costs and benefits based on shared services model Single, corporate perspective Autodesk University 2005 9
