BULLETIN BOARD Meeting Our April meeting will feature Cheryl Maurice. She will be giving us a presentation on her trip to the Madeira Islands of Portugal. Please come out and listen to what should be an interesting slide show. Clouds Open House Clouds Orchids Open House will be held on the weekend of April 8 th. & 9 th., 11 am. to 4 pm. - No Workshop Hospitality A reminder to Isabel Streeter and Kathy Burns that they are signed up to bring the sweets to go along with coffee. Thanks, Ladies!! Display The Society is planning to set up another orchid display at the Art to Heart Gallery in Thorold from Thursday, May 11 th. to Saturday, May 13 th. Joanne and Isabel have offered to set up the display, but we need a volunteer for taking down the display Saturday afternoon. Also, if you have any plants that will be in bloom for that weekend, please bring them to the May meeting on Wednesday. check out the library and see George Streeter if you wish to sign one out. Black Orchids in Vietnam Forests... Of over 1,000 species of orchids found in Vietnam, there are species... -black or dark purple... Bulbophyllum nigrescens: Found in Thailand, Yunnan Province China and Vietnam in sparse woods growing on tree trunks at elevations around 400 to 1,500 meters of a miniature size, warm to cool-growing lithophytes or epiphytes with squat, globular, flattened ventrally, rugose pseudobulbs carrying a single, apical and linear to lanceolate leaf that blooms in the late winter and early spring on an erect, basal (15 to 50cm long) many-flowered inflorescence. Bulbophyllum spadiciflorum... Sunipia nigricans... Found in Yunnan province of China and Vietnam at elevations of 1,200 to 1,800 meters as a small sized, warm to cool growing epiphyte that blooms in the spring. Volume 37, No. 7, March, 2015 5

Trichotosia dalatensis Bulbophyllum lemniscatoides:this species is native to Java, Sumatra, Thailand and Vietnam. It is found on mountain sides at about 1500m above sea level. The pseudobulbs are 2 cm tall and the two leaves about 10cm long. This species is deciduous or semi deciduous when flowering. The raceme is 4-5cm long and carries 20-30 flowers, each 2-3mm wide.the mobile appendages are 5-6mm long. Volume 37, No. 7, March, 2015 6
