Alvarado 1 and Kevin R. ixie 1 1 Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Washington State University arxiv:1702.08068v1 [math.dg] 26 Feb 2017 Tuesday 6 th February, 2018 Abstract We establish a quantitative lower bound on the reach of flat norm minimizers for boundaries in R 2. 1 Introduction Previous work has shown that bounded curvature approximations to shapes in R 2 can be effectively computed using the fact that the L 1 T functional for which there are many algorithms actually computes the boundaries of co-dimension-1 boundaries. While a shape with a curvature bound of B is certainly regular in so far as smoothness is concerned, there is another sense of regularity that is still unsettled, at least quantitatively. And that is the question of reach. ery briefly, the reach of a set is the supremum of the radii s such that a ball of radius s cannot touch the boundary in more than one place at a time. While a reach of r implies the curvature of the boundary is bounded by 1, r having the curvature bounded by 1 does not guarantee that the reach is at least r. In r Figure 1: Low curvature does not imply large reach. this paper we show that while a curvature bound of B does not imply that a flat norm minimizer has a reach of 1, being a flat norm minimizer does imply that the reach is at B least C where C < 1 is not too small. The previous work this paper builds on includes the paper of Morgan and ixie [7] in which they pointed out that the L 1 T functional was computing the flat norm, the Allard paper [1] in which fundamental regularity results were developed and the paper of an Dyke and ixie [2] in which it is shown that C < 1. 2 Definitions and Notation 2.1. Functions. Let Γ R 2 be compact submanifold of dimension 1 and suppose Γ = Ω for some open Ω R 2, and define the signed distance function to Γ, δ Γ : R 2 R as { dist(x, Γ) x Ω δ Γ (x) = dist(x, Γ) x R 2 \ Ω. We denote any scaling of the unit circle in R 2 by S 1. Which scaling we are using is context dependent, determined by the constraint that embeddings we study are isometric. Define γ : S 1 R 2 to be a C k isometric embedding of S 1, and let Γ denote it s image. We define the outer normal map, α ɛ : S 1 R 2 as α ɛ (s) = γ(s) + ɛn(s), where n(s) denotes the outer unit normal of Γ at γ(s). Similarly, we may define the inner normal map with the inner unit normal of Γ instead. We will denote the image of the outer-normal map and inner-normal map as Γ ɛ, and Γ ɛ respectively. Let ρ be the injectivity radius of the inner and outer normal map of Γ; that is, the supremal ɛ for which both α ɛ and ᾱ ɛ are injective on S 1, and notice that ρ = reach(γ). We will let cl, and int denote the closure, and interior, respectively. For the readers convenience, we will concisely present the definitions necessary to define the flat norm. However, for a full and complete discussion of these topics, the reader should refer to [6] and [3]. Although we may define the following for any real finite dimensional vector space, we will focus on defining the following on R n. For a non-negative integer k n, let Λ k (R n ) and Λ k (R n ) denote the space of k-vectors and its dual space, the space of k-covectors in R n ; respectively. For ξ = v 1 v 2... v k in Λ k (R n ), and ϕ = w 1 w 2... w k in Λ k (R n ), we have the dual Euclidean norms, ξ = det( t ) (3) where denotes the k n matrix with columns v 1,..., v k, and similarly for ϕ, modulo a matrix P with columns w 1, w 2,..., w k. Intuitively, the dual Euclidean norm of a k-(co)vector is the area of the k-dimensional parallelepiped defined by its vectors. We will define the mass of ω as ω = sup{ ω(x) : x U}. (5) Now, the space of k-dimensional currents is the dual space of D k (U) under the weak topology and will be denoted as D k (U). 3 Results Lemma 1. Let Γ be a C 1 isometric embedding of S 1 into R 2 and suppose n is differentiable at s S 1 such that n (s) < K. Then if 0 < ɛ < 1/K then T (Γ, γ(s)) = T (Γ ɛ, α ɛ (s)). Proof. Since we are trying to show equality of our tangent spaces, all we must show is that α (s) = cγ (s) for some c 0. Let n be differentiable at s S 1. Since n = 1 on S 1, n (s), n(s) = 0. Hence, since γ (s), n(s) = 0 there exists an r R for which n (s) = rγ (s). Thus α (s) = γ (s)(1+rɛ). We must therefore show that 1 + rɛ 0; which reduces to showing that ɛ 1/r. Since n (s) < K, we get that r < K. Moreover since 0 < ɛ < 1/K, we get that ɛ < 1/ r and hence 1/ r < ɛ < 1/ r ; implying that ɛ 1/r. Lemma 2. If Γ is a C 1,1 embedding of S 1 into R 2 and ɛ < 1/K, then T (Γ, γ(s)) = T (Γ ɛ, α ɛ (s)) for all s S 1. Proof. Since we will prove a local condition on Γ and Γ ɛ, we may instead investigate α ɛ E for sufficiently small open sets E about points in S 1. That is, Γ E and Γ ɛ E instead of Γ and Γ ɛ respectively. We will first argue that Γ ɛ E is a C 1 hypersurface, and then show that T (Γ E, γ(s)) = T (Γ ɛ E, α ɛ (s)) for all s E. Since Γ E is C 1,1, reach(γ E ) > 0 [5]; so by [4] we get that the signed distance function δ(x) to Γ E is a C 1 function on the open ɛ-neighborhood U ɛ (Γ E ) of Γ E. Hence the ɛ-level-set L ɛ (δ) is also C 1 ; and since L ɛ (δ) = Γ ɛ E, we get that Γ ɛ E is also C 1. Now since Γ is C 1,1, n is Lipschitz and therefore differentiable a.e in S 1. Hence by Lemma 1, T (Γ, γ(s)) = T (Γ ɛ, α(s)) for a.e s S 1. Therefore if we pick x S 1 such that n is not differentiable at x, there exists a sequence {x i } i=1 in E converging to x for which T (Γ, γ(x i )) = T (Γ ɛ, α ɛ (x i )) for all i. This, together with the fact that Γ ɛ E is C 1, implies that T (Γ ɛ, α ɛ (x)) = T (Γ, γ(x)). Lemma 3. Suppose that Γ is C 1,1 and therefore has positive reach equal to ρ and also that the curvature is strictly less than 1/ρ. Since Γ is compact, we may assume there exist distinct v, v S 1 for which α ρ (v) = α ρ (v ). We will show that T (Γ, γ(v)) = T (Γ, γ(v )). Proof. First and foremost, we have to set everything up. Let Γ have positive reach ρ. Since Γ is compact, there exist distinct v, v S 1 for which α ρ (v) = α ρ (v ) or ᾱ ρ (v) = ᾱ ρ (v ). Without loss of generality let s assume α ρ (v) = α ρ (v ). At first glance, the proof might appear to not use the fact that curvature of Γ is uniformly bounded above by something strictly less than 1/ρ. Since Γ is a C 1,1 embedded curve in R 2 with empty boundary, it has positive reach. This implies that there is some small ɛ so that every component of Γ contains a translate of B(0, ɛ).
