Farm Management System Map Import Standard (Paddocks) 09 December 2012 Farm IQ Systems Limited Commercial in confidence
Purpose This document contains the Standard that prescribes the format and content of the geospatial mapping information that must be provided to comply with Farm IQ s Farm Management System farm map import. The document includes the following sections: 1. Interpretation 2. Circumstances requiring submission of geospatial mapping information 3. Description of the required geospatial mapping information 4. Specification for submitting digital geospatial mapping information 5. Specification of the format for digital geospatial mapping information 1 Interpretation In this Standard: Line segment means a straight line bounded by end points with distinct map coordinates. Polyline means a continuous line composed of one or more line segments. Polygon means a closed shape bounded by sequentially-connected polylines that do not cross, such that the map co-ordinates of the end point of one polyline are the same as the map coordinates of the start of the next polyline. 2 Circumstances requiring submission of geospatial mapping information Upon joining FarmIQ a farmer may optionally submit geospatial mapping information for one or more paddocks for the purposes of establishing their farm in the FarmIQ farm management system. 3 Description of the Required Geospatial Mapping Information (1) Submitted geospatial mapping information shall comprise: (a) One or more polygons that spatially delineate each paddock and; (2) The geospatial mapping information for each polygon should include: (a) Text used to define the paddock name 4 Specification for Submitting Digital Geospatial Mapping Information (1) The geospatial mapping information that must be submitted is: (a) A single Esri shapefile that: (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) Includes data for a single farm consisting of one or more paddocks; and Contains paddock boundaries only; and Paddock names must be unique; and Is created using the applicants GIS tool e.g. ArcGIS desktop or MapInfo Professional, and will be uploaded electronically as part of the farm set-up process undertaken within the Farm IQ Farm Management System. 5 Specification of the Format for Digital Geospatial Mapping Information (1) For the purposes of submitting geospatial mapping information for your farm, a shapefile: (a) Must comprise the following four digital files: (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) A.shp file shape format file; the feature geometry in the shapefile (i.e. the map coordinates of the polyline segments that make up the paddock polygons). NOTE: A shp file cannot have a mix of geometry types i.e. a mixture of points, lines, polylines and polygons. A.shx file shape index format file; a positional index of the feature geometry in the shapefile (i.e. the location within the.shp file of the start of the data for each paddock polygon). A.prj file projection format file; the coordinate system and map projection information for the shapefile. NOTE: Some GIS\Mapping packages will create an xml file instead of a prj file. This will not load into the FarmIQ system. A.dbf file attribute format file; the attributes for each paddock polygon in the shapefile. Farm IQ Systems Limited Page 3
(b) Must not include multi-part polygons. (2) The projection format file must contain information compliant with the New Zealand Transverse Mercator 2000 Projection. NOTE: If a third party is capturing the data the vendor should be made aware that New Zealand Transverse Mercator is mandatory. This is also called NZTM or projection SRID 2193. This projection information is held in the prj file. The example below shows an incorrect and a correct projection (prj) file. In the incorrect file the errors have been highlighted in bold red text. Incorrect: PROJCS["unnamed", GEOGCS["GCS_NZGD_2000", DATUM["D_NZGD_2000", SPHEROID["GRS_1980",6.378137e6,2.982572221010002e2]], PRIMEM["Greenwich",0.0], UNIT["Degree",0.0174532925199433]], PROJECTION["Transverse_Mercator"], PARAMETER["False_Easting",1600000], PARAMETER["False_Northing",10000000], PARAMETER["Scale_Factor",9.9960000000000004e-1], PARAMETER["Central_Meridian",173], PARAMETER["Origin_Of_Projection",0], PARAMETER["Scale_Factor",9.9960000000000004e-1], UNIT["Meter",1.0]] NOTE: A number of lines are also missing. These include: AXIS["Longitude", EAST], AXIS["Latitude", NORTH]], AXIS["x", EAST], AXIS["y", NORTH]] Correct: PROJCS["NZGD_2000_New_Zealand_Transverse_Mercator", GEOGCS["GCS_NZGD_2000", DATUM["D_NZGD_2000", SPHEROID["GRS_1980", 6378137.0, 298.257222101]], PRIMEM["Greenwich", 0.0], UNIT["degree", 0.017453292519943295], AXIS["Longitude", EAST], Farm IQ Systems Limited Page 4
AXIS["Latitude", NORTH]], PROJECTION["Transverse_Mercator"], PARAMETER["central_meridian", 173.0], PARAMETER["latitude_of_origin", 0.0], PARAMETER["scale_factor", 0.9996], PARAMETER["false_easting", 1600000.0], PARAMETER["false_northing", 10000000.0], UNIT["m", 1.0], AXIS["x", EAST], AXIS["y", NORTH]] Resolution: The prj files can be opened and edited in any text editor. The incorrect components can be copied from this document. NOTE: Opening a shp file in ArcGIS Desktop is not a method of verifying that the prj file is correct. The only way to ensure its validity is to load it into the FarmIQ application and have it displayed over one of the base maps. (3) The attribute format file (i.e. the.dbf file) may include multiple columns of data, however in order that paddock names can be automatically set up in FarmIQ one of those columns should include as an attribute the information specified in Table 1 below. (4) Other optional fields can also be supplied in the attribute format file (i.e. the.dbf file), as specified in Table 1 below. Table 1: Specification for polygon attributes in the.dbf file - attribute format file Attribute Description Mandatory or Optional Format PadkName Paddock name Optional Text, 255 characters Behaviour if not provided User can select from a list of all attributes, or choose for paddock names to be created by the system EffHect The effective area of the paddock Optional Floating point number Effective area set to the calculated size of the paddock Hectares The actual area of the paddock Optional Floating point number Total area set to the calculated size of the paddock 6 Confirmation Upon successfully loading an Esri shp file the user will be presented with a map of the farm (from the shp file) and labelled with the paddock name column that was chosen.
