Gistat: moving towards a location information management system (merging geographical, statistical and historical information) Pina Grazia Ticca Marco Ballin Istat - Italy Aguascalientes, Mexico 2-4 December 2013
Agenda ISTAT and GISTAT The geographic information system Moving towards a location information management system The Geoportal
GIS in ISTAT Environmental unit Agriculture unit GIS and Territorial unit (30 persons of which 10 directly involed in developing and managing GIS system) Dissemination unit
GISTAT (up to now) It is the Italian geographic information system for statistics It is a milestone of the Stat2015 (a medium period strategic project in Istat) It is based on a spatio-temporal geodatabase it relies on a Service Oriented Architecture with the purpose of sharing and disseminating geospatial information
GISTAT (up to now) The Geographic Database It is a nationwide spatio-temporal database It is an admin borders-centric geodatabase; it was firstly created by collecting and harmonizing the census mapping cartography Census mapping cartography has been digitized since 1991 and then updated up to the 2011 census. It stores other layers such as: local market areas, election districts, morphological urban aggregates,
The spatio temporal data bases enables a backward reconstructing of both admin borders for Provinces (NUTS3) and population data starting from 1861 for census years
GISTAT (web services) GeoSpatial information is published through GeoWebServices (standard WMS) The applications let the users interact with the GeoWebServices using a web browser The applications have been designed to let users navigate, search and query geostatistical data using a Location Analytics approach. They can be accessed from a variety of applications and used to derive knowledge from geospatial analyses The GeoWebServices are available for different years: 1991, 2001 and 2011 and are linked to the statistical data
GISTAT (the next future) Gistat is moving towards a location information management system, with the aim of merging geographical, statistical and historical information The design of the Gistat geodatawarehouse will integrate the geospatial information with the corporate statistical datawarehouse. Design of the Geoportal: a unique access point for the geospatial information
Design of the Geoportal The design of an Istat Geoportal will enhance the accessibility and interoperability of Gistat The Geoportal will make available geographic and georeferenced data providing discovery, viewing and data download services The production of a catalogue of metadata (data and services) is a mandatory for the system evolution
Design of the Geoportal The cataloguing of geodata is in progress, according to the national and international standards (RNDT, EU- INSPIRE) RNDT specifications are the rules stated by A.D.I. (Agency for the Digital Agenda) that is the national agency supervising the adoption of the digital code for public institutions RNDT metadata model is a subset of the EU-INSPIRE model
Google Earth to search into the Gistat geowebservices
Location Analytics - Reading demographic indicators using a map Foreign population per 1000 inhabits NUTS3
Location Analytics - Reading demographic indicators using a map Female population older than 85 LAU2 Querying the values
Location Analytics Spatially accessing the census variables Employment figures Enumeration Areas
Location Analytics Who is living and working close to the maritime border?
Location Analytics Spatially search urban localities (inside a user-defined area)
Location Analytics Query results - the urban locality and linked census variables
Conclusions The geographical approach is a milestone of the Stat2015 Istat project Gistat is a starting point to provide users with knowledge coming from statistics spatially enabled The Gistat-Geoportal will make available geographic and georeferenced data, providing viewing, discovery and data download services It can be seen as part of a wider National and European project
