WOULD THERE BE WIND IF THE EARTH S TEMPERATURE WAS THE SAME EVERYWHERE? ANSWER IN PARAGRAPH FORM AND PROVIDE EVIDENCE TO DEFEND YOUR ANSWER.
No, there would be no wind. Wind is caused by differences in air pressure due to uneven heating of the atmosphere. Differences in air pressure are caused by different temperatures.
Characteristics of the Atmosphere Chapter 6 Lesson 1
After actively engaging in this lesson, I can Describe the composition of Earth s atmosphere. Explain why air pressure changes with altitude. Explain how air temperature changes with atmospheric composition. Describe the layers of the atmosphere.
The Composition of the Atmosphere The atmosphere is made up mostly of nitrogen gas. Oxygen makes up a little more than 20% of the atmosphere.
Atmospheric Pressure and Temperature The atmosphere is held around the Earth by gravity. Gravity pulls gas molecules in the atmosphere toward the Earth s surface, causing air pressure. As altitude increases, air pressure decreases. Air temperature decreases as altitude increases. Lower parts of the atmosphere are warmer because they contain a high percentage of gases that absorb solar energy.
Layers of the Atmosphere There are five major layers of atmosphere above the Earth that are separated by temperature. Each layer of the layers are separated by an increasing or decreasing temperature of the gases in the layer.
With your table, discuss why air pressure and temperature decrease as the altitude gets higher.
Fill in the chart in your interactive notebook.
Label the heights of each layer on the left. With your table partner, categorize the layers where the pictures belong. DO NOT GLUE YET!
The Troposphere Lies next to the Earth s surface Densest atmospheric level (because gravity pushes down on it the most) Layer where we live Layer where weather occurs
The Stratosphere Air is very thin There is almost no moisture in this layer so it s very dry inside the stratosphere Contains the ozone layer which absorbs sun UV rays and keeps the Earth safe from overheating
About 3mm thick or the thickness of 2 pennies stacked together.
The Mesosphere Coldest layer As altitude increases, temperature decreases Very windy
The Thermosphere * Contains the ionosphere where electricity makes gases light up = The Northern and Southern Lights *Very high temperature (BUT IT DOES NOT FEEL HOT). *This is because the particles are moving fast but do not touch.
