Faculty Environmental Sciences» Department Geosciences» Chair for Geoinformationsystems Developing Scientific GDI DGEO Workshop Lars Bernard, Stephan Mäs February 2013

TU Dresden GIS Team Chair Geoinformationsystems @ Faculty Environmental Sciences Research and Education focuses on Geoinformation Science (Master Geoinformationstechnologien) Today: Team of >10 (2 PostDocs, 8 PhD) Participate(d) in a number of SDI-related Projects (COBWEB, GIGAS, GLUES, HEREPLUS, LPIS-Testbed, EO2HEAVEN, COBWEB, GDI Sachsen Studies ) Active in AGILE, EuroSDR, INSPIRE, OGC, GEOSS, LG GDI-DE More under: http://tu-dresden.de/fgh/geo/gis TU Dresden Scientific GDI 2

GEOSS-Activities (GLUES) Participation in the GEOSS AIP 5: Support testing the GEO Discovery and Access Broker (provision of test services) Continue in proposed EU project OpenDataGEOSS TU Dresden Scientific GDI 3

GEOSS-Activities (EO2Heaven) AIP3 Contribution to case studies Provision of in-situ sensor data AIP4 access to EO and health data via OGC Services Import tool for sensor data into OGC SOS / SWE AIP5 Lead of the SBA Health: AQ and Waterborne thread decision support and processing components test integration of EO and health data tutorials and best practice guides TU Dresden Scientific GDI 4

Scientific Geodata Infrastructures (sgdi) GLUES GDI for Research on Sustainable Land Management A number of further Projects dealing with sgdi aspects, e.g. http://modul-a.nachhaltiges-landmanagement.de/en/scientificcoordination-glues http://cobwebproject.eu/ www.eo2heaven.org TU Dresden Scientific GDI 5

Scientific Geodata Infrastructures (sgdi) sgdi for efficiently GLUES GDI for Research on Sustainable Land sharing and accessing scientific data, Management (Global Assessment of Land Use Dynamics, Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Ecosystem sharing and accessing analysis methods Services) for scientific data, sharing simulation models, A number of further Projects dealing with sgdi aspects, e.g. fostering interdisciplinary research... http://www.envision-project.eu/ http://modul-a.nachhaltiges-landmanagement.de/en/scientificcoordination-glues http://www.eurogeoss.eu www.eo2heaven.org TU Dresden Scientific GDI 6

sgdi Current achievements from GLUES & EO2HEAVEN TU Dresden Scientific GDI 7

Sustainable Landmanagement BMBF funding measure Sustainable Land Management Modul A, 70 Mio, 2010-2016 12 globally distributed Regional Projects to research impacts of climate & socio-economic changes to develop measures for sustainable land management General Tasks for GLUES (Global Assessment of Land Use Dynamics, Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Ecosystem Services) Establish and foster communication, perform outreach and support stakeholder work in the program Develop scientific synthesis on the base of consistent global scenarios and data sets Establish an GLUES Scientific GDI (TU Dresden, 52 North, con terra)! TU Dresden Scientific GDI 8

GLUES Geoportal TU Dresden Scientific GDI 9

Discovery & Assessment in sgdi (MetaVIZ, provenance) TU Dresden Scientific GDI 10

Discovery & Assessment in sgdi (MetaVIZ) Still Challenges on Metadata Automated metadata generation & usage (we could do better!) Achieving & using common reference systems (also vocabularies) Dealing with simulations & scenarios How to best describe quality and propagate quality descriptions and model assumptions Link to linked data and to scientific papers... TU Dresden Scientific GDI 11

Exploration in sgdi (Time4Maps) TU Dresden Scientific GDI 12

Discovery & Assessment in sgdi (Compare2Maps) TU Dresden Scientific GDI 13

Discovery & Assessment in sgdi (Compare2Maps) Challenges Link to methods to allow for model comparisons (transformations, geoprocessing, ) Integrate uncertainty in the visualization... TU Dresden Scientific GDI 14

Distributed Geoprocessing in sgdi: Vision Local Data Server (WFS,WCS, SOS, ) User Geo- Processing Registry Algorithm Feeds WPS- Instance Developer http://52north.org/ Data Servers WPS- Instances TU Dresden Scientific GDI 15

Distributed Geoprocessing in sgdi: Prototypes Prototype Geoprocessing AppStore Install Web Processing Service Search Algorithm in WPS AppStore Subscribe to Processing Feed for your Web Processing Service Use algorithm on your resources Example: Assess expostions (public health) Air Quality Zoned Statistics Aggregation http://52north.org/ Statistical Units TU Dresden Scientific GDI 16

Distributed Geoprocessing in sgdi: Prototypes TU Dresden Scientific GDI 17

Distributed Geoprocessing in sgdi: Vision Local Data Server (WFS,WCS, SOS, ) Next Steps Empirically derive taxonomies for WPSgeoprocessing operators? Instances Geo- Algorithm User Further develop Processing a Feeds community Registry WPS- Instanz geoprocessing repository and best practices on distributed geoprocessing Developer Further link to cloud computing Formalising geoprocessing operators (as Map-Algebra, etc.)? Data Servers Granularity?... TU Dresden Scientific GDI 18

sgdi Some future work (in GLUES, COBWEB, OpenDataGEOSS, ) TU Dresden Scientific GDI 19

sgdi: Publishing citable Scientific Data http://datacite.org/ http://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/pangaea.51464 Current Issues Having Citation Indexes Improving Discovery Harmonized Licensing Linking with other GDI-Services (view, analysis)...... TU Dresden Scientific GDI 20

sgdi: Citing Scientific Data http://datacite.org/ TU Dresden Scientific GDI 21

sgdi: Licensing Scientific Data http://creativecommons.org http://opendatacommons.org/ TU Dresden Scientific GDI 22

Persistent TestBed Federated Access Management for research & teaching in the SDI Saxony (GeoSN, TU Dresden, con terra; 9/2012-12/2013) http://sdi-testbed.eu Main Goals: Combine SDI access management with the German research network (http://www.dfn.de) Enabling researchers and students to get access to the SDI in a single-sign-on-manner (similar to accessing digital libraries) Appropriate license model to allow for research and teaching use based on existing licensing frameworks 23 TU Dresden Scientific GDI

Using (volunteered) crowd soucing!? Issues When & where do we reach the critical size of the crowd, esp. for volunteered crowd sourcing? Quality control, esp. for spatiotemporal phenomena (includes modeling trust) Data fusion & data mining (derive relevant events/processes) Data privacy TU Dresden Scientific GDI http://watch.eyeonearth.org 24

Conclusions As GDI get established in Administrations Scientific GDI are still in their infancies and have several challenging questions for us... Scientific GDI are more than GDI...(here we focussed functional aspects, but did not cover archiving, funding, operation, etc.) need more elaboration an horizontal measures & activities Scientific GDI should become part of Research Infrastructures (NSF Earth Cube, ESFRI Environment...) TU Dresden Scientific GDI 25
