GeoSUR Award Sixth Competition (2017) GeoSUR was created in 2007 with the financial backing of the CAF and in joint coordination with the Pan American Institute of Geography and History (PAIGH). The fundamental aim of GeoSUR is to provide the community of geospatial information users in the Americas with local, national and, especially, transnational data and applications that contribute to improving support systems for planning and decision-making, to facilitate the comprehensive development of the region www.geosur.info Each year the award is awarded to the outstanding activity arising from the relationship of the participating GeoSUR program institutions based on the geospatial data available on the geoportal, on the institutions themselves, and on the use of geospatial information services offered in Latin America and the Caribbean. On this occasion, this issue of the award coincides with the tenth anniversary of the GeoSUR Program; and so the technical presentation of the wining project will take place during the 10 th meeting of GeoSUR to be held on the 25 th of October, 2017, in Panama City in the framework of the 21 st General Assembly of the PAIGH, which will be held on the 23 rd to the 27 th of October. 1. Requirements The award will recognize the application of spatial data or the development of geospatial information services or products offered in the region, where these possess specific features of innovation and relevance, giving priority to those that contribute to the fulfillment of the general objectives of the GeoSUR Program. At this sixth award, the evaluating jury will give special consideration to the facility with which spatial data can be accessed, applied and used, on the basis of the products, services or spatial data bases of the candidates. 2017 GeoSUR Award 1

2. Nominations Institutions or individuals with their origins in any Latin American or Caribbean country may participate. The offices of the the GeoSUR Program and of the PAIGH will announce in reasonable time through their websites the number, title, author(s) and nationalities of the candidates selected in accordance with the rules for the award. Once the documentation corresponding to the competition has been submitted, candidates may withdraw neither that documentation nor their candidacy for the contest before the jury reaches its decision. The GeoSUR Award may not be granted twice for the same application, product or spatial data base already given the award previously even if the results of its evolution are assessed. This criteria does not apply to initiatives which have been granted an honorable mention at previous awards or projects which did not end as winners of previous awards. 3. Jury The jury will consist of one representative from the CAF, another from the PAIGH and a third from a country connected to the Program but which did not submit an initiative to compete for the award of that particular year. Although each jury member s decision will be sent by means of an electronic communication addressed exclusively to the General Secretariat of the PAIGH, the jury may adopt its decision during a face to face or virtual session called for that purpose. The award will be granted based on the majority decision of the jury. The General Secretariat will coordinate the tasks related to the verdict by consensus or by a majority of jury members. 2017 GeoSUR Award 2

4. Award In order to participate, the interested parties must submit the following documentation to the jury at the General Secretariat of the PAIGH exclusively by electronic means to the address premios@ipgh.org by August 31st, 2017: A report that covers the objective, methodology and results achieved by the initiative, including all the necessary links for users to view and operate the tool, as well as the technical aspects which will facilitate the jury s assessment, including the corresponding metadata. Details of the corresponding project information and its connection to the GeoSUR Program. This aspect will be an additional element to be assessed by the jury. The winner will be given a diploma and US$2,000 in cash, which will be presented to the project leader representing the corresponding institution. At the discretion of the jury, the prize may be left unawarded. In 2017 the award will be presented in Panama City, Panama, during the 10th Meeting of the GeoSUR Program within the framework of the 21 st General Assembly of the PAIGH. If it is needed, financing for the responsible person to be able to attend the event to receive the award and make a presentation about the winning initiative may be covered by GeoSUR in full or partially, depending on available resources. If the characteristics of the work so allow, an article or summary of the winning work will be published in the Revista Cartográfica Journal of the PAIGH, after being analyzed by the editor. The project information would also be available for reference or publication in the institutional communication media of the PAIGH and the GeoSUR Program, such as the Newsletter or the Program web portal. The same could be considered in the case of other non-winning works. 2017 GeoSUR Award 3

5. General provisions Participation in the contest implies acceptance of the current rules, of the jury members and of the decision handed down without possibility of appeal. Should there be any unforeseen events, the General Secretariat of the PAIGH may reach as many decisions as it judges appropriate, as to which the applicants will not have a right to file a complaint.
