APPLICATION GF BASIC THERMODYNAMICS TO COMPRESSOR CYCLE ANALYSIS Richard G. Kent P.E. (Reg. N, J., PA) Allis Chalers Corporation, Milwaukee, Wisconsin INTRODUCTION This paper looks at the basic steps in copressor operation with exaples showing their relation to the language of therodynaics textbooks. Discharge Volue: V 2 "' w X R X T pl 7.68 ft. 3 "' 1 X 53,3 X 610 144 X 29,4 The various types of copressors: centrifugal, axial, rotary, reciprocating, helical screw, and others, differ considerably in construction and eans of copression, nevertheless, they all have the sae coon threefold task to perfor upon the gas between suction and discharge flanges. 1. Suction - Containing the gas within the copressor. 2. Copression - Raising the gas pressure to discharge pressure. 3. Discharge - Moving the copressed gas into the discharge line, To understand these three steps in detail, let's consider a single acting frictionless piston and cylinder operating with the following conditions: Cylinder capacity at inlet conditions: 1 pound of dry air. Inletpressure: p 1 14.7lbs./in. 2 Discharge pressure: p 2 29.4 lbs./in. 2 Inlet teperature: Fro th5.s data we can calculate: Inlet Volue: v 1 "' wt. x R x pl "'12.6 ft. 3 T 1 X 53.3 X 500 144 X 14,7 Further, we'll initially assue no heat is added to, or reoved fro the cylinder during these three steps - this is called adiabatic copression, and would result in the following teperature and volue. Discharge Teperature (Adiabatic): T k-1 k One Coplete Cycle Using the Mechanical Approach Here the events during one copressor cycle would be in ters of how any foot pounds of work the crankshaft ust provide for each one of these steps in a coplete cycle, This approach will differ fro the textbook, heat balance approach for calculating work, but the net result ust be the sae in each case, a. Crankshaft work during suction stroke. Because there is no difference in pressure between the top and botto sides of the piston, there is no crankshaft work during the suction stroke. b. Copression work. At the beginning of copression the pressure on both the top and botto of the piston is the sae. In our calculations, absolute air pressure values are used to easure the force resisting upward piston oveent, therefore, we ust also take into account the opposite force provided by atospheric pressure in the crankcase. Thus, the total work to copress the air is equal to the su of crankshaft work plus the work resulting fro atospheric pressure on the botto area of the piston. Since we assued the piston is frictionless and no heat is added to, or reoved fro, the confined air being copressed, between work and internal energy is: Work Expressed In BTU Where: lb. of air L1u "'~hange in internal energy, Ll T Change in air teperature, F or 0 R Cv Specific heat at constant volue (.172 BTU for each lb. of dry air) ~ We'll ephasize here that internal energy is strictly a function of teperature and it is unrelated to other gas properties. (o) (5.5) ~20.9) 26.4 BTU) Consider the sae proble with the therodynaic textbook heat balance approach where changes in enthalpy (i.e., the su of internal and potential energy) are calculated, Calculations can be considerably sipler than the previous exaple by oitting the effect of crankcase pressure, providing we treat the suction stroke as work done by, rather than on the air. Starting with air in the inlet line, we'll review the sae fundaental steps of copressor operation. a. Total energy or enthalpy (h) in the intake line h "'_internal energy and potential energy h (BTU) "' CvT + pv x 144 TIE =.172 X 500 + 14.7 X 144 X 12.6 "' 120.3 BTU b. Work done by the air during suction stroke. The inus sign-will show that work was done by, rather than on, the air. ~ PSIA (Initial volue - Final volue x 144 14.7 X (0-12.6) X 144-34.3 BTU c. Work done on the air during copression Work (BTU) =.172 (610-500) = 18.9 BTU d. Work done ~ the air during discharge = 29.4 X 7.68 X 144 = 41.8 BTU e. Total energy or enthalpy in the discharge line h at inlet + the net work on the air = h at discharge Check: 120.3-34.3 + 18.9 + 41.8 = 146.7 BTU h =.172 X 610 + 144 (29.4 X 7.68) And : Change in EnthalFY : 146.7 BTU 146.7-120.3 = 26.4 BTU Therefore, the copressor has increased the air's total energy by 26.4 BTU which is equal to the net work done by the crankshaft in our first approach. This is obvious, for when there is no friction or heat flow into, or out of the air, all the work done by the crankshaft ust be absorbed by the air. Accordingly when we suarize and 292

siplify the work of suction, copression, and discharge the following equation for copressor v1ork results: l X -j rn 144 The ath involved in transforing the three steps of the copressor process into this equation, for adiabatic copression is readily available in ost therodynaic texts. Our object here is priarily to show the eaning of the three factors which for the equation. Side Issues, Friction and Cooling Most shop en take a di view of explanations liited to frictionless devices such as we have assued. Thus, we'll show how the basic process changes with the inevitably present heat of fric- "tion. Friction siply results in the addition of heat to the air being copressed, thus, we'll visualize its effects by stopping the piston at the copletion of its intake stroke and add heat through the cylinder walls. In accordance with Charles' Law, the absolute pressure of the confined air will rise in direct proportion to the rise in absolute teperature. Hence, if we add enough heat the air pressure within the cylinder will reach discharge line pressure even though no work of copression has been done by the piston. We can then restart the copressor and coplete the cycle by discharging the air which is already at discharge line pressure. At first glance, it appears that the addition of heat would result in less total copressor work since no piston work was required to copress the air. However, recalling that total horsepower is the su of suction, copression and discharge work, we find: Total Copressor Work ~ Suction Work + Copression Work* + Discharge Work ~'l (Initial Vol. - Final Vol.) ' 0 : P2 (Initial Vol. - Final Vol-] x 144 77FJ ~4.7 (0-12.6) + 0 + 29.4 (12.6-10~ X 144 * In this case, the copressor did not provide the Hark. Recall that for our exaple where no friction or ezternal heat was added to the copressor, the copressor work for one cycle was only 26.4 BTU. 'l'hus, \ le have shown that although frictj.on or ext~rnal heat reduces the copression work, the net result for a coplete cycle is increased copressor horsepower. After noting this effect of friction, or the addition of heat, on copressor horsepower, we can turn this knowledge to our advantage by reoving heat fro the gas being copressed. This is coonly done with fins, cooling water jackets, or spray injection. Using the conditions of our original exaple, we'll cool the air. When the air just reach~s discharge line pressure, we'll stop the piston and cool the cylinder unitl the air teperature reaches inlet air teperature. Again, Charles' Law enters the picture with a resulting drop in pressure to; 29.4 x 500 or 24.1 PSIA hlo Now we'll restart the copressor for the two steps required to coplete the cycle: a. Work of discharging the copressed air P 2 (Initial Vol. -Final Vol.) x 144 Suarizing the work in this exaple of cooled copression: Total Work Suction Hork + Copression Work + Discharge Work -Pv + Cv GT2 - Tl) + Tl2 TlJ+ Pv -34.3 +.172 [610 5oo) + (530-5ooU + 36.3 26.1 Thus, even though cooling necessitates additional copression work, the net result is lower copressor horsepower. Up to this point we have shown how the three basic factors in copression tie into therodynaic ters to product the adiabatic copressor equation. 293

Further, we have proven with nuerical exaples that which the shop an knew fro the start - friction increases, and cooling decreases power requireents. Before showing how the adiabatic equation is rewritten to reflect the effects of friction and cooling, we ust know several other textbook ters. That Word Called Entropy Many textbooks define entropy as a easure of the unavailability of soe portion of a gas's total energy. Pressurized plant air which has been cooled to roo teperature has no ore total energy than the atosphere air in the roo. Obviously, then we need further inforation to coplete the picture: 1. The percentage of the total energy which can be used in a achine or process, and 2. The percentage which is unavailable. Pressurized plant air is in a position to expand and produce work hence, the net effect of a plant copressor and aftercooler is to increase the available portion of the air's energy, and not to increase its total energy, (i.e. enthalpy), This difference in available energy can be seen on a Mollier chart for air as a difference in entropy. For the pressurized plant air illustration this difference in availability is nuerically equal to: T x S ~ difference in availability BTU where: T s Th. roo and plant air teperature 0 R S@ At. - 8 @ Plant Air Pressure difference in entropy To gain additional failiarity with the ter entropy let's calculate the approxiate work of adiabatic copression with entropy values rather than the echanical and enthalpy ethods used previously. The air properties in our original exaple would show up on a Mollier chart for air as illustrated below. 66o 610 500 158.8 146.7 120.3 CD - Adiabatic Copression Path DE - Cooling Copressed Air To Initial Teperature AEDB - Area Representing Adiabatic Work CY - Typical Polytropic Copression Path BCYX - Area Representing Added Work For Typical Polytropic Copression The area enclosed by ABDE represents the work of one coplete cycle, however, its echanical analogy is not as siple to visualize as the typical indicator card with its pressure and volte relationships, In our exaple of adiabatic copression the work to get the air fro 14.7 PSIA and 500 F to 29.4 PSIA and 610 F was 26.1+ BTU These Th. two conditions are represented by points C and D on the sketch. Now if we reove all the heat of copressor work in an aftercooler, we will arrive at point E, hence the area ABDE will represent the sae aount of work as h 2 - h 1. If we wish to becoe ore sophisticated about this, our calculations will have to adjust slightly by the fact that real gases deviate slightly fro straight line relationships such as D to E. In textbooks, the heat transfer in an entropy change is accurately defined as: dq = Tds. For air we would be reasonably accurate with: Q = (TD + TE) x (SB - SA) (2) Q 555 x' (.908-.860) 26.4 BTU Th. Available Energy is the average teperature between D and E Available energy is the ter which ties the picture together and solves the ystery about high pressure air having no ore total energy than low pressure air at the sae teperature. Fro our practical point of view what is iportant about any gas is how uch work can be extracted fro the gas. The equation which tells how uch available energy can be extracted fro a gas between two teperature levels is: Where a 2 - a 1 = difference in available energy BTU lb..86o,gos.927 ENTROPY BTU /LB, jor The air which we copressed to 29.4 PSIA in our exaple has no ore total energy than the roo air but, it can expand in an air tool to atospheric pressure and in doing so, will produce work by 294

dropping its teperature ll0 F (i.e., adiabatic teperature change between 29.4 PSIA and 14.7 PSIA). Let's deterine the difference in available energy between the plant air and roo air, both at a teperature T 1 and accordingly h1 ~ h2. a ~ 0 + 23.8 BTU per pound Thus, the available energy has increased even though the total energy is no greater than that of the surrounding roo air at atospheric pressure. This increase in available energy is nuerically equal to the work which would be required. to copress the air in our exaple at a constant teperature fro suction to discharge, Note, the work of suction, copression at constant teperature, and discharge is: Polytropic Efficiency In actual practice, copressors do not follow the adiabatic teperature rise and horsepower relationships because of friction and cooling. Their actual perforance is called polytropic copression, a te+ which takes into account the extent of friction and cooling during the cycle. Aong all the types of copressor efficiencies used, polytropic efficiency is the only index which accurately reflects copressor perforance. In pointing out the iportance of available energy gain, rather than gain in total energy we didn't say what practical process would be used to get the available energy down to our lower teperature. Friction in uncooled polytropic copression increases the adj.abatic horsepower by an aount equal to (T2 + T1) x (s2 - s1). (2) For this extra work, our available energy equation tells us that of this aount, T1 (82-81) is available. Coparing these two ters, we note that soe of this additional work above adiabatic is recoverable. But this increase in available energy is only available in the for of heat whereas we want to use this air to perfor work. It should be recalled that ost plants throw away heat through the inter and after cooler because it is not the for of energy which can be used to perfor echanical work. With this in ind, we can now define polytropic head as the gain in that portion of available energy which can produce echanical work. Bolytropic efficiency then is polytropic head divided by the heat input (work) per pound needed to obtain this polytropic head. In equation for: Npolytropic = (h 2 hl) - (T2 + Tl) (s2 - sl) (2) Let's alter our exaple of adiabatic copression to one of polytropic copression with 660 R (200 F) discharge teperature. In our exaple using the textbook way, we have found that the actual copressor work, per pound of air, is equal to the final enthalpy inus the initial enthalpy or (h 2 - h 1 ). These properties as well as entropy values ay be found on a Mo1lier chart for air. On different charts, their values ay not be the sae because varying basic reference teperatures are frequently used. This is uniportant because we are interested in differences in enthalpy and entropy rather than their absolute values. For this exaple of polytropic copression: Tl 500 R T2 "' 660 pl 14.7 PSIA p2 29.4 hl 120.3 BTU per pound h2 158.8 sl.9os BTU per pound s -927 per degree polytropic efficiency (158.8-119-7) - (660 + 500) (.927-.908) = 71-1/<$ 2 2 (158.8-120.3) This exaple and the explanation of polytropic efficiency is ainly to illustrate the eaning of the ter. In ordinary plant practice the engineer knows what the copressor discharge teperature is and fro this can find polytropic efficiency through the relationship between polytropic and adiabatic perforance. To alter our basic adiabatic relationships for polytropic copression, we find the polytropic equivalent of k-1 and designate this as n-1 k-1 x 1 = n-1 ~ Npolytropic n n Thus for polytropic copression, we can use all the adiabatic equations siply by replacing k-1 or k with n-1 or n T k-1 -n n:r Having now developed the equation for coon polytropic copression, we'll check our exaple of polytropic copression. We assued a 660 R discharge teperature and fro entropy values calculated 71-1/~k polytropic efficiency. Conclusion A copressor designer reading this outline would no doubt wish to aplify any of the general stateents and include additional Side issues which enter into the picture. Conversely a plant engineer ay believe that day to day shop probles do not necessitate a working knowledge of entropy, enthalpy, et cetera. The writer recognizes validity in both of these positions. However, it is hoped that a fundaental knowledge of what occurs between copressor suction and discharge flanges will be a useful starting point for the shop an when probles of copressor selection or operation arise.
