Unit 7: Energy. Bell Ringer: You are on a roller coaster 92 meters above the ground traveling at 14 m/s. You weigh 400 N (or approximately 40.8 kg). What is your mechanical energy? Show your work and include your units!

Types of Energy Mechanical/ Sound Thermal Chemical Radiant/ Light/ Electromagnetic Electrical Nuclear

Mechanical Energy Mechanical energy: energy of motion Sound is mechanical energy too!

Thermal Energy (Heat) The heat energy of an object determines how active its atoms and molecules are. A hot object is one whose atoms and molecules are excited and show rapid movement. A cooler object's molecules and atoms will show less movement.

Chemical Energy Energy that is available for release from chemical reactions. The chemical bonds in a match stick store energy that is transformed into thermal energy (fire) when the match is struck.

Chemical Energy

Radiant Energy (Light / Electromagnet) Involves all energy found within electromagnetic spectrum. These types of energy travel in waves. These waves have electrical properties and magnetic properties.

Radiant Energy (Light / Electromagnet) Electromagnetic Spectrum

Electrical Energy Energy caused by the movement of electrons. Easily transported through power lines and converted into other forms of energy. Most common energy type throughout U.S. households.

A type of potential energy stored in the nucleus of an atom and released as nuclear reactions. These reactions releases tremendous amounts of energy. Nuclear Energy Types of Nuclear Energy: Nuclear fission reaction(used in nuclear power plants): nucleus splits Nuclear fusion reaction: nuclei fuse or join together

Bell Ringer HAND IN PURPLE PERMISSION SLIP FOR SOL MOVIE NIGHT 1. Where would you find the most potential energy on a roller coaster? 2. Where would you find the most kinetic energy on a roller coaster? 3. What type of energy transformation is taking place when a roller coaster goes down a hill?

An energy transformation is a change of one form of energy into another.

Law of Conservation of Energy: the law states that energy is neither created or destroyed

Let s try a problem from the study guide! 44) A 25 kg ball is at rest on a balcony on Earth that is 30 m high. A cat knocks the ball off of the balcony. After falling down 10 m, what is its kinetic energy? Hint: Use the Law of Conservation of Energy 30 m 25 kg Ball 20 m 10 m 0 m Answer: 2,450 J

** In every energy conversion, some energy is always converted into thermal energy (because of friction)!

Where does all this energy come from?! Nonrenewable Resources: cannot be replace after they are used (or can only be replaced over thousands or millions of years) Fossil fuels: Coal, petroleum, natural gas Nuclear Energy

Where does all this energy come from?! Renewable Resources: can be used and replaced in nature over a relatively short period of time Wind Solar Geothermal Biomass Water

Energy Poster & Debate (10 point summative) Your job is to work as a group and create a poster that shows why your energy resource is the best choice! You will be graded on 1) Design (make it look pretty) 2) Explain how energy is produced from your resource 3) Highlight at least 3 ADVANTAGES! 4) On the back of your poster make notes on why your resource is better than the competitor! You will need this for your debate next class! Textbook pages 232-237 are helpful
