A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO COPERNICUS AND CAMS Juan Garcés de Marcilla Director of Copernicus Services European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Copernicus EU Copernicus EU Copernicus EU www.copernicus.eu

COPERNICUS IN BRIEF Copernicus is a flagship programme of the European Union - Monitors the Earth, its environment and ecosystems a full, free and open data policy In support of policy making is a tool for economic development

COPERNICUS TIMELINE

Q1-Q2 2018 2023 13 October 2023

THE COPERNICUS VALUE- ADDING CHAIN COPERNICUS VALUE- ADDING CHAIN Policy Makers & Public USERS & Private, Commercial Different Users and needs Farming Oil Spill Tracking Air Quality Flood Surveillance Arctic change Examples of Products Land Marine Emergency Security Climate Information Services Space Infrastructure & * In Situ Infrastructure * Sustainable observation OBSERVATION * Mostly based on the principle of subsidiarity from EU Member states

WHY ATMOSPHERIC COMPOSITION MATTERS? Lights from Space Emissions by human activities Changes in the composition of the atmosphere is the most direct and significant impact of mankind on the Earth System so far, being the key driver of climate change Everyone of us breathes about 14 kg of air every day and poor air quality results in over half a million premature deaths annually in Europe

C O P E R N I C U S A T M O S P H E R E M O N I T O R I N G S E R V I C E CAMS directly addresses several topics of high societal relevance

CAMS IN SUPPORT OF POLICIES Emergencies Local air quality Seveso and other classified plants Aerosols UV radiation Regional air quality Long-range transport of pollution Protection of the ozone layer Climate change Critical loads As a direct consequence, most information products in scope of CAMS support international, EU, national and local policy design, implementation and monitoring

BUT 2. European CAMS air ALSO quality: pollen COVERS forecasts OTHER NEEDS 25% of the European population is sensitive to pollens and, though there s a need for information, there is currently no associated policy. CAMS current offer came in response to expressed needs in this area, especially coming from the health sector. BIRCH GRASS OLIVE

WHAT IS AVAILABLE? CAMS PORTFOLIO CAMS portfolio is continually evolving, following user requests, developments, changes in observations (not only Sentinels)...

15 CAMS SERVICE SERVICE CHAIN CHAIN IN A NUTSHELL Space Agencies In-situ observations National scale

OVER 70 DATA STREAMS USED DAILY CAMS is built on top of ECMWF s highly successful weather forecasting system. Because of this, Europe can afford a system with no equivalent in the world, taking advantage of about 80 different streams of satellite observations.

CAMS IS OPERATIONAL OBS MONITORING This means that all products are produced: permanently (user can invest and count on continuity) timely (just like weather forecasts) reliably (systematic/continuous evaluation)

SEE CAMS ON TV VERY SOON From December 1st, CAMS air quality forecasts for today and tomorrow will be broadcast several times daily. The European air quality index recently introduced by the EEA will be used (with values from 1 to 5).
