TOWN OF CHATHAM LAND BANK 1998-2007 TALLY 16 PROJECTS COMPLETED 162 ACRES ACQUIRED TOTAL PURCHASE PRICES: NON-TOWN FUNDING: NET LAND BANK COST: $12,768,800 $ 1,71,214 $10,737,586 TOTAL COST PER ACRE: $78,820 NET LAND BANK COST PER ACRE: $60,818 HIGHLIGHTS Chatham is one of only two towns on the Cape that retained its Land Bank while also adopting the Community Preservation Act. Chatham preserved more than 6 percent of the town s remaining undeveloped buildable land through strategic Land bank purchases. For the first time, the Town and Chatham Conservation Foundation, Inc. worked together to secure important open space, in the Old Village Historic District (Ivy Lane), and at Valley Farm off Barn Hill Road. The Town completed several undevelopment projects along Route 28 and at Whites Pond (Sylvan Gardens). A local artist records the autumn scene en plein air at Forest Beach in South Chatham, viewing it from the town park overlooking the 75 acres that the Land Bank helped to purchase from MCI-WorldCom in 1999. View of Whites Pond from the 8-acre Sylvan Gardens property off Old Main Street, preserved by Land Bank funds in 2005 PROPERTY SPOTLIGHT A group of South Chatham neighbors rallied to persuade the Town to purchase 75 acres at Forest Beach and 25 acres at Ryders Cove and Lovers Lake from MCIWorldCom (formerly, RCA land). A volunteer contingent even began the negotiations with the corporation. The beach property includes barrier beach and salt marsh (where the radio towers once stood) and about 5 acres of upland overlooking it all.
