Exploring Hidden South Carolina Backroads to Beaufort November 13 16 November is a great month to explore South Carolina s hidden Low Country, featuring one of the US s finest coastal gems Beaufort. We ll make our way, coming and going, over lovely blue roads that take us past blackwater rivers, ancient churches and cemeteries, and local eateries of great repute. We ll travel by comfortable van, at a pace that will blend with the rhythms of the region.
Itinerary: Tuesday, November 13 This morning we ll depart the Foothills / Upstate region, and take to the backroads! Our drive will take us through Laurens and Saluda Counties, SC, where stops will include the Belfast Plantation, the Saluda County Museum, the pretty town of Ridge Spring, and lunch nearby. In the mid-afternoon, we ll visit the one-of-a-king African Art exhibit at the Stanback Museum in Orangeburg. Afterwards, check into our hotel for R & R. Dinner and overnight in Orangeburg. Wednesday, November 14 Before departing Orangeburg, we ll make a stop at the Edisto Memorial Gardens located along one of South Carolina s prettiest Low Country blackwater rivers. We ll continue on a drive of discovery through the hamlets of Midway and McPhersonville, with stops and commentary at both places. We ll arrive in Beaufort County, visit the Sheldon Church ruins, then enjoy lunch in the pretty riverside town of Beaufort. Our
afternoon itinerary will feature time to explore downtown s boutiques, museums, and riverside park; our hotel check-in / R & R; and a pleasant carriage tour of the historic district. Dinner and overnight, Beaufort. Thursday, November 15 Today, we ll enjoy a drive along the Sea Island Highway, that will take us to the historic Penn Center, to Hunting Island, and to Fripp Island. Our drive and stops will feature some of the area s best stories, lovely historic structures, and lunch at the Fripp Island Marina. This evening, we ll enjoy a river-and-sound boat cruise, followed by dinner in downtown Beaufort. Overnight, Beaufort. Friday, November 16 This morning, we ll pay a visit to nearby Parris Island home of the Marine Corps Recruitment Depot... and one of the best regional museums in the Southeast. We ll then embark on a drive that will take us to Blackville, SC and lunch at Miller s Bread Basket. Afterwards, we ll visit God s Healing Springs, then continue our drive home.
