AN INVERSE FUNCTION THEOREM CONVERSE arxiv:1812.03561v1 [mah.fa] 9 Dec 2018 JIMMIE LAWSON Absrac. We esablish he following converse of he well-known inverse funcion heorem. Le g : U V and f : V U be inverse homeomorphisms beween open subses of Banach spaces. If g is differeniable of class C p and f if locally Lipschiz, hen he Fréche derivaive of g a each poin of U is inverible and f mus be differeniable of class C p. Inroducion A general form of he well-known inverse funcion heorem assers ha if g is a differeniable funcion of class C p, p 1, beween wo open subses of Banach spaces and if he Fréche derivaive of g a some poin x is inverible, hen locally around x, here exiss a differeniable inverse map f of g ha is also of class C p. Bu in various seings, one may have he inverse funcion f readily a hand and wan o know abou he inveribiliy of he Fréche derivaive of g a x and wheher f is of class C p. Our purpose in his paper is o presen a relaively elemenary proof of his converse resul under he general hypohesis ha he inverse f is (locally) Lipschiz. Simple examples like g(x) = x 3 a x = 0 on he real line show ha he assumpion of coninuiy alone is no enough. Thus i is a bi surprising ha he mild srenghening o he assumpion ha he inverse is locally Lipschiz suffices. Helpful ools for he ask a hand have been developed in he inense sudy of Lipschiz funcions in he Banach space seing moivaed by Rademacher s heorem concerning he exisence of an abundance of poins of differeniabiliy of Lipschiz mappings in he seing of euclidean spaces. In paricular we recall in he nex Dae: December, 2018. 1
2 LAWSON secion a useful generalizaion of he chain rule by O. Maleva and D. Preiss [4]. In Secions 3 and 4 we presen our main resuls and provide some follow-up illusraive maerial in Secion 5. For a comprehensive reference o he inverse funcion and implici funcion heorems and relaed heory, we refer he reader o [1]. 2. A general version of he chain rule In his secion we recall some noions of differeniabiliy of Lipschiz funcions beween open subses of a Banach spaces and a generalized chain rule from he work of Maleva and Preiss [4]. This maerial will be crucial o he derivaion of our main resuls in he nex secion. Suppose ha Y and Z are Banach spaces, U is a nonempy open subse of Y, f : U Z, and y U, v Y. Recall ha lim 0 +(f(y +v) f(y))/, if i exiss, is called he one-sided direcional derivaive of f a y in he direcion v. Similarly if lim 0 (f(y+v) f(y))/ exiss, i is called he (bilaeral) direcional derivaive of f a y in he direcion v. If he direcional derivaive of f a y in he direcion v exiss for all v Y, hen he mapping from Y o Z sending v o is direcional derivaive is, by definiion, he Gâeaux derivaive (by some auhors he mapping is also required o be a coninuous linear map). Maleva and Preiss [4] have given he following generalizaion of he one-sided direcional derivaive. Definiion 2.1. The derived se of f a he poin y in he direcion of v is defined as he se Df(y,v) consising of all exising limis lim n (f(y+ n v) f(y))/ n, where n ց 0. The δ-approximaing derived se of f a y in he direcion of v is defined, for δ > 0, by { f(y +v) f(y) D δ f(y,v) = Remark 2.2. I is easy o see ha (2.1) Df(y,v) = δ>0d δ f(y,v) } : 0 < < δ. In general he derived se may be empy, a single poin, or muli-valued. If Df(y,v)is a single poin, hen i is he one-sided direcional derivaive of f a y in he direcion
AN INVERSE FUNCTION THEOREM CONVERSE 3 v, and we denoe i by f + (y,v). If he direcional derivaive of f a y in he direcion v exiss, i is denoed f (y,v). If f is Gâeaux differeniable a y, hen he Gâeaux derivaive a y is equal o f (y, ) = Df(y, ). We recall a general version of he chain rule from [4, Corollary 2.6]. Proposiion 2.3. Suppose X, Y are Banach spaces, x U, an open subse of X, and V is an open subse of Y. If g : U V is coninuous and has a one-sided direcional derivaive a x in he direcion of v and f : V Z is Lipschiz, hen D(f g)(x,v) = Df(g(x),g +(x,v)). Proof. Le a D(f g)(x,v). Then here exiss a sequence n 0 + such ha a = lim n f g(x+ n v) f g(x) n. Le κ be a Lipschiz consan for f on V. Le ε > 0 and choose N such ha (g(x+ n v) g(x))/ n g +(x,v) < ε/κ for n N. We hen noe for n N f g(x+ n v) f g(x) f(g(x)+ ng + (x,v)) f(g(x)) n n = f(g(x+ n v)) f(g(x)+ n g + (x,v)) n κ g(x+ n v) g(x) n g +(x,v) n = κ g(x+ n v) g(x) g + (x,v) n κ(ε/κ) = ε. I hus follows ha he sequence [f(g(x)+ n g + (x,v)) f(g(x))]/ n also converges o a, so a Df(g(x),g + (x,v)). The argumen is reversible so he equaliy claimed in he proposiion holds. 3. A Converse of he Inverse Funcion Theorem The inverse funcion heorem assers he exisence of a local inverse if he derivaive is inverible. In his secion we derive a converse resul: a Lipschiz coninuous local inverse implies an inverible derivaive.
4 LAWSON In his secion we work in he following seing. Le X,Y be Banach spaces, le U and V be nonempy open subses of X and Y resp., each equipped wih he resriced meric from he conaining Banach space, and le g : U V and f : V U be inverse homeomorphisms. Definiion 3.1. For g : U V, he Gâeaux derivaive of g a x U is defined by d G x g(v) = g + (x,v) for all v X, provided such one-sided direcional derivaives exis for all v X and he resuling map d G xg : E F is a coninuous linear map. Lemma 3.2. Le x U, y = f(x) V. Assume ha g has a Gâeaux derivaive d G x g : E F a x and assume ha f is Lipschiz. Then Df(g(x), ) dg xg is he ideniy map on X and he Gâeaux derivaive d G xg is injecive. Proof. Since f g on U is he ideniy map, i follows direcly from he definiion of D ha D(f g)(x, ) is he ideniy map on X. Hence by Proposiion 2.3 for any v X, v = D(f g)(x,v) = Df(g(x),g +(x,v)) = Df(g(x),d G x(v)). This equaliy of he lef-hand and righ-hand sides of he equaion yields he wo concluding asserions. Lemma 3.2 yields he inveribiliy of he he Gâeaux derivaive in he finie dimensional seing. Corollary 3.3. If X,Y are boh finie dimensional and g is Gâeaux differeniable a x U, hen d G x is inverible. Proof. Since g and f are homeomorphisms, X and Y mus have he same dimension. Hence he linear map d G x he case by Lemma 3.2. is a linear isomorphism if and only if i injecive, which is The infinie dimensional case requires more work and sronger hypoheses. Lemma 3.4. Le x U, y = g(x) V. Assume ha g is Fréche differeniable a x and ha f is Lipschiz on V. Then he image of X under he Fréche derivaive dg x : X Y is dense in Y.
AN INVERSE FUNCTION THEOREM CONVERSE 5 Proof. Le M f be a Lipschiz consan for f on V. Le w Y. Pick τ > 0 small enough so ha y +w V for 0 < < τ. We se z = f(y+w) f(y) and noe from he Lipschiz condiion ha f(y +w) f(y) (3.2) z = 1 M f (y +w) y = M f w. We divide he remainder of he proof ino seps. Sep 1: (g(x+z ) g(x))/ = w for 0 < < τ. ( ( f(y +w) f(y) ) ) g(x+z ) g(x) = g f(y)+ y = gf(y+w) y = w, so (g(x+z ) g(x))/ = w. Sep 2: For ε > 0 here exiss < τ such ha (g(x+z ) g(x))/ dg x (z ) < ε. From he Fréche differeniabiliy of g a x, he Fréche derivaive dg x saisfies For ε > 0 pick δ > 0 such ha g(x+u) g(x) dg x (u) lim = 0. u 0 u g(x+u) g(x) dg x (u) u < ε M f w whenever 0 < u < δ. Pick > 0 such ha y+w V and M f w < δ. We conclude from inequaliy (3.2) and he preceding ha g(x+z ) g(x)) dg x (z ) = z g(x+z ) g(x)) dg x (z ) z ε < M f w M f w = ε Using he lineariy of of he Fréche derivaive dg x, we obain dg x (z ) = dg x (z ), which allows us o rewrie he firs enry in he preceding sring o obain g(x+z ) g(x) dg x (z ) < ε, which esablishes he Sep 2. We noe ha combining Seps 1 and 2 yields w dg x (z ) w g(x+z ) g(x) + g(x+z ) g(x) dg x (z ) ε. Since w Y and ε > 0 were chosen arbirarily, his complees he proof.
6 LAWSON We come now o a cenral resul of he paper, wha we are calling a converse of he inverse funcion heorem. Theorem 3.5. Le X and Y be Banach spaces, le U and V be nonempy open subses of X and Y resp., and le g : U V and f : V U be inverse homeomorphisms. Le x U and y = g(x) V. Le g be Fréche differeniable a x and le f be Lipschiz coninuous on V. Then dg x ( ) : X Y is an isomorphism. Proof. By Lemma 3.2 he Fréche derivaive dg x is injecive, hence a linear isomorphism ono is image Z = g(x), a subspace of Y, and has inverse Df(y, ) : Z X. (Inparicularinhisseing forw Z imus behecasehadf(y,w)isasingleon, which we could wrie alernaively as f + (y,w).) Le M f be he Lipschiz consan for f on V. By equaion (3.2) every member of D δ f(y,w) is bounded in norm by M f w, and hence he same is rue for Df(y,w) = δ>0 D δf(y,w). We conclude ha Df(y, ) : Z X is Lipschiz for he Lipschiz consan M f. By Lemma 3.4 Z is dense in Y. Thus he linear Lipschiz map Df(y, ) : Z X exends uniquely o a linear Lipschiz map (hence a bounded linear operaor) from Y o X. Label dg x = Γ X, Df(y, ) = Γ Z and is exension o Y by Γ Y. We noe for 0 z Z, z = Γ X (Γ Z (z) Γ X Γ Z (z), so (1/ Γ X ) z Γ Z (z). By coninuiy of he norm and densiy of Z in Y his inequaliy carries over from Γ Z o is exension Γ Y. Bu his exended inequaliy implies Γ Y has a rivial kernel, which means ha Γ Y is injecive. Bu if Z is proper in Y, hen his is impossible, since Γ Z (Z) = X. Hence Z = Y and Γ Z = Γ Y is an inverse for dg x. 4. A Global Resul We can use Theorem 3.5 o derive useful resuls for sudying differeniable funcions wih locally Lipschiz inverses, in paricular for deriving differeniabiliy properies of he inverse. In he following C p means have coninuous derivaives hrough order p for p a posiive ineger, have coninuous derivaives of all order for p =, and being analyic (having locally power series expansions) for p = ω.
AN INVERSE FUNCTION THEOREM CONVERSE 7 Theorem 4.1. Le X and Y be Banach spaces, le U and V be nonempy open subses of X and Y resp., and le g : U V and f : V U be inverse homeomorphisms. Assume furher ha g is of class C p on U for some p 1 and ha f is locally Lipschiz on V. Then g and f are inverse diffeomorphisms of class C p. Proof. We fix x U and y = f(x) V. We apply Theorem 3.5 o small enough neighborhoods of x and y so ha f is Lipschiz o see ha he hypoheses of he sandard inverse funcion heorem (in he Banach space seing) are saisfied. The conclusions of his heorem hen follow locally from he inverse funcion heorem. (See, for example, [5, Theorem 1.23] for he C ω -case.) In his way we obain ha he conclusions of he heorem hold locally for each x X and hence hold globally. We remark ha he preceding resuls can be generalized o he seing of Banach manifolds. In order o obain he preceding resuls in his seing one needs Lipschiz chars (beween he manifold meric and he Banach space meric) a each poin and hen he preceding resuls readily exend o his more general seing. 5. An Applicaion We skech in his secion one seing in which our general converse of he inverse funcion heorem can be fruifully applied and briefly consider a specific example. Suppose we are given some equaion of he form F(x,y) = 0, where x,y belong o some given open subse of a Banach space. In some cases i migh be possible o solve he equaion for y in erms of x, i.e., y = g(x), which can seen o be of class C p. Le s suppose furher ha g has an inverse given by x = f(y), bu no corresponding explici descripion of his funcion. If i can be shown, however, ha f is (locally) Lipschiz, hen we use he resuls of he preceding secion o show ha f is also of class C p. Example 5.1. LeB(H)beheC -algebraofboundedlinearoperaorsonhehilber space H. We consider he Banach space S of hermiian operaors and he open cone of posiive inverible hermiian operaors P. In recen years a useful noion of a mulivariable geomeric mean Λ on P has arisen [2], [3], generally called he Karcher mean. One useful characerizaion of his n-variable mean Λ(A 1,...,A n ) for A 1,...,A n P
8 LAWSON is ha i is he unique soluion X of he equaion log(x 1/2 A 1 X 1/2 )+ +log(x 1/2 A n X 1/2 ) = 0. If we fix A 1,...,A n 1, le Y = A n, and he lef-hand side of he equaion be F(X,Y), hen we are in he general seing of he previous paragraph wih U = V = P. One can raher easily solve F(X,Y) for Y and see i is an analyic funcion g of X, bu no conversely. However he inverse f is given by f(y) = Λ(A 1,...,A n 1,Y). The (local) Lipschiz propery is a basic propery of Λ, so he earlier resuls yield X, he geomeric mean, as an analyic funcion of Y, or alernaively we can say Λ is an analyic funcion of each of is variables. This urns ou o be an imporan propery of Λ. This ype of analysis can be applied o oher imporan operaor means. References [1] S. Kranz and H. Parks, The Implici Funcion Theorem.
