2013 BAYLOR BASEBALL GAME NOTES @BAYLORBASEBALL BAYLOR VS UT ARLINGTON BAYLOR TAKES FIRST-EVER SERIES AGAINST WEST VIRGINIA Baylor moved back to.500 for the first time since March 8 with a 2-1 series win in the first-ever meeting with West Virginia over the weekend. The Bears bounced back from a 9-8 loss on Friday, after overcoming a 6-0 fifth-inning deficit, and won the final two games in convincing fashion. On Saturday, BU pounded out eight runs on 13 hits behind Max Garner s six shutout innings for his first win since March 3 and first scoreless start of the season. On Sunday, the Bears erupted for their best inning of the season, scoring nine runs in the second inning en route to an 11-1 run-rule win. Austin Stone earned his second win in Big 12 play with a career-high six scoreless innings. BAYLOR VS. UT ARLINGTON SERIES HISTORY Baylor won two of three games last season against UT Arlington and leads the all-time series 80-30, 49-12 in Waco and 34-10 under Steve Smith. Last year, UTA topped BU 5-4 in Arlington on March 13, 2012 before the Bears evened the season series with a 6-4 win at home on April 25. Baylor then got the better of UTA with an 11-6 win to advance in the NCAA Waco Regional on June 2. BAYLOR VS. WESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE Baylor is 211-78 against teams that are current members of the Western Athletic Conference. The Bears own a winning record over all five teams they have played from the WAC: UT Arlington (80-30), Texas State (48-18), Dallas Baptist (44-21), UT San Antonio (29-6) and Louisiana Tech (10-3). The Bears are 4-1 against the WAC this season with wins over Texas State, Louisiana Tech (2) and Dallas Baptist, and a loss to UTSA. BAYLOR S ADVANTAGE AT BAYLOR BALLPARK Baylor is 10-9 at home and has won three straight. Baylor is 344-143 in games played at Baylor Ballpark overall. In home games this season, Baylor pitchers are holding opponents to a.229 average with a 2.83 ERA. BAYLOR OFFENSE GETTING HOT AT RIGHT TIME Baylor has its offense clicking over the last eight games, hitting.325 with 55 runs, 51 RBI, 45 walks, and 18 extra base hits while knocking 10 or more hits six times. For the season, the Bears are hitting.270 and averaging 4.9 runs per game -- during the last eight games, BU is averaging 6.9 runs per game. The offense put a fitting cap on the weekend by exploding for nine runs in the second inning in Sunday s 11-1 win over West Virginia -- the most runs BU has scored in an inning since doing the same at Georgia on Feb. 27, 2011. PORTER DRIVING IN RUNS AT HIGH RATE Grayson Porter has been on an RBI binge lately, tallying 16 over his last eight games while hitting.345 with eight runs, five walks and three homers. For the season he has 20 RBI on only 16 hits in just 23 games. His five home runs are a career-high and equal the rest of the BU hitters combined. For the season, Porter ranks fifth in the Big 12 in homers (5) and 74th in the NCAA. In Big 12-only games, he has been even better as he leads the conference in homers (3), RBI (15) and slugging percentage (.773) while hitting.364 in only six games. STONE RISING UP IN BIG 12 PLAY Prior to Big 12 play, Austin Stone was 0-2 with a 5.14 ERA in 14 innings of work through seven appearances and four starts. But he s been a different pitcher in Big 12 action. He first came in to relieve Bobby McCormack on March 30 against Kansas State and posted 4.1 innings while allowing three unearned runs on six hits and a walk. The effective outing gave him his first win of the season. Seven days later, he started against West Virginia on Sunday and turned in six innings of one-run ball on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts. The career-long outing earned him his second straight win and lowered his season ERA to 3.33. His Big 12 totals are 2-0 with a 0.87 ERA in 10.1 innings. His Big 12 wins are tied for the league lead and his ERA is sixth. MISCELLANEOUS QUICK HITS Since the start of the 2003 season, Baylor is: - 266-131 (.676) when its starting pitcher lasts at least 5.0 innings - 91-30 (.752) when its pitchers record at least 10 strikeouts - 249-77 (.765) when scoring first - 303-49 (.866) when out-hitting its opponent - 286-81 (.787) when holding its opponent to fewer than five runs - 265-52 (.840) when scoring at least six runs - 232-34 (.876) when scoring at least seven runs Since the start of the 2002 season, Baylor has won 94.3% of the time when leading after eight innings (338-21). Baylor has won 82 of its last 101 games when hitting at least two home runs. Baylor is 29-19 in extra-inning games since the start of the 2003 season, including a 3-2 record last season and 2-1 record this season. Baylor has won 34 of its last 60 home games in which the opponent scored in the first inning. Baylor has won 16 of its last 19 Big 12 Conference series finales with a chance for a series sweep. Only three times has Baylor won the first two games of a Big 12 series at home and not completed the sweep 1999 vs. Oklahoma, 2001 vs. Missouri and 2009 vs. Texas Tech. The Bears are 22-3 in series finales when playing for a Big 12 home series sweep. Baylor and Oklahoma are the only programs to have participated in every Big 12 Conference Championship. Enjoying breakout week, he hit.375 (6-for-16) with eight RBI, four runs, two homers, two steals and a double to compile a.813 slugging percentage and.368 on-base percentage in four games. With an RBI in all four games during the week, Porter started off with a 2-for-4 game against UTSA as he had a double, run scored and RBI. In the series opener against Kansas State, he had a sacrifice fly. He then erupted in the second KSU game, hitting a game-tying two-run homer in the eighth inning and a walk-off two-run homer in the 13th. His 3-for-6 day produced five RBI, two runs scored and a steal. His hit, homer, run, steal and RBI totals were all career highs. The two homers were the first by a Baylor player this season and since Logan Vick did so on June 9, 2012 against Arkansas in the Waco Super Regional. The five RBI were the most by a Baylor player this season and since Max Muncy did so against Kansas State on March 24, 2012. Porter ended the KSU series by going 1-for-3 with a run scored, RBI, walk and steal. NEWMAN STEPPING TO FRONT OF ROTATION Baylor s newfound ace Dillon Newman (3-2, 3.12 ERA) has been nothing short of dependable through eight starts this season. He s given up more than three runs just two time, has a one-hitter under his belt and has allowed just two walks in 49.0 innings. His 19.0 strikeout-to-walk ratio leads the NCAA and his 0.37 walks per nine innings are second. He also ranks 30th in the NCAA with a 0.88 WHIP. GARNER MAKING MOST OF MOVE TO ROTATION Baylor s closer last year, Max Garner (2-3, 3.65 ERA) has stepped into the rotation with success as he s given up more than three earned runs just one time in his eight starts. In his last start on Saturday, he shutout West Virginia for six innings to earn the win and end WVU s eight-game winning streak. The outing marked the first time all season he has held an opponent scoreless in a start, despite experiencing discomfort with a blister on his pitching hand for the first time in his life. Three times he s thrown more than six innings and twice he s thrown more than eight, including a nine-inning no-decision. He s logged over 100 pitches four times. BULLPEN TRIO SHARING THE LOAD SUCCESSFULLY Three arms out of the Baylor bullpen have really picked up solid innings as Crayton Bare, Josh Michalec and Ryan Smith all have over 20.0 innings and ERA under 4.00. Bare sports a 2.56 ERA and has more strikeouts (31) than hits given up (25) in 31.2 innings, the most of any BU reliever. Over his last 20.2 innings, he has not given up an earned run while allowing 12 hits and striking out 24. Michalec is 3-2 with a 3.43 ERA in 21.0 innings and has held opponents scoreless in six of his last seven appearances. Anchoring the back of the bullpen has been Smith, who has 19.0 innings of relief. Take away his emergency start in the first game of the season (2.2 IP, 5 R), and he is 1-1 with a 1.42 ERA and five saves out of the bullpen. As a reliever, he s holding opponents to a.145 batting average and has given up nine hits while striking out 12. His career-high five saves rank fourth in the Big 12. ASHBY COMING OUT OF BULLPEN STRONG He doesn t have the same amount of work as the trio mentioned above, but Doug Ashby has been just as effective. In his third year with the program, the side-arming lefty has given up just two runs in 14.1 innings for a stellar 1.26 ERA while giving up just eight hits and seven walks with 10 strikeouts. None of the hits given up have been for extra bases and he s given up a hit in only five of his 12 appearances. He started the season holding opponents scoreless in his first nine outings over 9.1 innings. He has twice gone a career-high 2.2 innings and has faced one batter in three outings. ORF GETTING ON-BASE AT HIGH RATE Nathan Orf has reached base safely in 30 of 32 games this season and has his second 10-game or better hitting streak this season at a career-high 14. On his current streak, he s hitting.393 with 10 runs, eight RBI, seven walks, four doubles and a steal. He has multiple hits in five of the games and is coming off a career-high-tying four-hit game. He has had a hit in 28 games this season and has a team-high 13 multi-hit games. He recently picked up his 100th career hit on March 19 against Sam Houston State. Orf ranks first in the Big 12 in on-base percentage (.493), second in the Big 12 in hitting (.397) and third in hits (48). He ranks 26th in the NCAA in hits (48), 33rd in on-base percentage (.493) and 37th in hitting (.397).

2013 BAYLOR BASEBALL GAME NOTES @BAYLORBASEBALL BAYLOR VS UT ARLINGTON LANGFORD EXTENDS ON-BASE STREAK TO 23 Lawton Langford has eclipsed Nathan Orf s on-base streak set earlier this season (15) with a 23- game run of his own to raise his on-base percentage to.424. He is one shy of tying his career long streak of 24 from last season. In 30 games this season, Langford has failed to reach base safely just one time, and that was on Feb. 24 against UCLA when he came in as a sub for one at-bat. During the streak, he has 22 hits, 18 walks, 18 runs, eight RBI, six HBP and two steals. Over his last eight games, he s hitting.321 with eight walks, seven runs, four RBI, one double and steal. TOWEY PRODUCING RUNS Baylor senior third baseman Cal Towey has been consistently driving in runs all season. His impressive RBI streak ended at nine games in the series opener on March 8th against Illinois, but he hasn t stopped there. During the streak he hit.414 (12-for-29) with 15 RBI, eight runs, six walks, two doubles, a triple, homer and steal. He had multiple RBI in six of the nine games during the streak. He leads Baylor with 28 RBI, ranking him third in the Big 12 and 51st in the NCAA. Over his last eight games he s driven in eight while hitting.400 with five runs, four walks, two doubles and triples. BAYLOR IN BIG 12 OPENERS Baylor is 9-8 all-time in Big 12 season openers. Prior to losing the March 22 opener at No. 20 Oklahoma State 5-0, the Bears won last year s opener in a 9-4 decision at home over Texas Tech. Last season s win snapped a five-game losing streak in Big 12 openers and gave BU its first such win since 2006. BAYLOR ADDS SIX MORE TV GAMES TO 2013 SLATE Baylor Athletics announced on March 18th that six more of baseball's games this season will air on TV. The additions give the Bears a total of 12 TV dates over their last 25 games of the 2013 regular season. FOX College Sports (FCS) and FOX Sports Southwest Plus (FSN Southwest Plus) will broadcast the additional games. FCS will carry Baylor's March 30th game at home against Kansas State along with the May 16th and 18th contests at Texas Tech. FSN Southwest Plus will air the entire three-game series at TCU on April 19-21. NEWMAN TOSSES ONE-HITTER VS NEW ORLEANS Baylor junior right-hander Dillon Newman was nearly flawless in a seven-inning one-hitter against New Orleans in a 10-0 win at Houston's Cougar Field on March 15. Giving BU its first one-hitter since Logan Verrett did so on March 11, 2011 in Waco against Louisiana Tech, Newman allowed just two base runners and both were eliminated on double plays as he faced the minimum 21 hitters in seven innings. He allowed a one-out walk to Zach Pohto in the first and a one-out single to Reese Kanter in the second. These young men are all strong students and will be good representatives of Baylor University on and off the field. Steve Johnigan and Trevor Mote have done a great job putting this group together. The following will join Baylor's baseball program in the fall of 2013: LHP Daniel Castano (Lake Travis, Texas; Lake Travis HS), C/1B/OF Aaron Dodson (Cypress, Texas; Cy-Fair HS), 1B/LHP Kameron Esthay (Moss Bluff, La.; Sam Houston HS), RHP/INF Nick Lewis (Flower Mound, Texas; Marcus HS), INF Steven McLean (Los Altos, Calif.; Los Altos HS), RHP Kyle Ott (Galveston, Texas; Ball HS), RHP Josh Pettitte (Deer Park, Texas; Deer Park HS), OF Darryn Sheppard (Sugar Land, Texas; Dulles HS) and 1B/RHP Case Smith (Waco, Texas; Midway HS). Four of the Baylor signees are ranked among the top 500 nationally by Perfect Game, including a national top 105 recruit in Sheppard. Sheppard, an outfielder from Sugar Land, Texas, is ranked as the 14th best player in Texas and the No. 4 outfielder in the state by Perfect Game. Sheppard hit.400 with seven home runs and a.510 on-base percentage as a junior at Dulles High School. Besides Sheppard, three others are rated in Texas: Ott is 62nd, Castano is 66th and Pettitte at 99th. Ott was a first-team 24-4A all-county selection in 2012 after going 7-2, with a 1.39 ERA at Ball High School in Galveston. Castano is the 11th-ranked LHP prospect in Texas and struck out 84 in 66.2 innings as a junior. Pettitte, the son of 17-year MLB veteran and five-time World Series champion, Andy Pettitte, helped lead Deer Park High School to a 32-2 record last season, earning second-team 22-5A all-district honors. 2013 LAST AT-BAT WINS OPPONENT (DATE) PLAY INN.
