Aspects of SUSY Breaking Zohar Komargodski Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton ZK and Nathan Seiberg : arxiv:0907.2441 Aspects of SUSY Breaking p. 1/?

Motivations Supersymmetry is important for particle physics, string theory and many other branches of physics and mathematics. We do not yet have a good understanding of spontaneous SUSY breaking. This is important: If we want to make contact with experiment SUSY has to be broken. Aspects of SUSY Breaking p. 2/?

Motivations Breaking of global N = 1 supersymmetry predicts the existence of a massless Weyl fermion G α. Studying it we hope to elucidate generalities of SUSY breaking and make contact with phenomenology. There are many open questions. Aspects of SUSY Breaking p. 3/?

Open Questions What is the connection between the UV physics and the Goldstinos? Models of SUSY breaking are sometimes incalculable and even worse, there is no superpotential description. Can we say which UV operators are associated to the low energy Goldstino? Is there a useful superspace description at low energies? How do we parameterize SUSY breaking in strongly coupled models? Aspects of SUSY Breaking p. 4/?

Open Questions Is there any difference between D-term and F -term breaking? How is D-term vs. F -term breaking reflected in the Goldstino Lagrangian? Aspects of SUSY Breaking p. 5/?

Open Questions What are the interactions of the Goldstino particle with itself? In the 1970 s Akulov and Volkov proposed a Lagrangian: [ L A V F 2 det δ ν µ i F 2 νgσ µ Ḡ + i ] F 2Gσµ ν Ḡ F 2 + Gσ µ µ Ḡ + It was before the discovery of SUSY. What is the role of this Lagrangian? Why is there a symmetry G α e iθ G α? How to describe corrections? Aspects of SUSY Breaking p. 6/?

Open Questions What are the interactions of the Goldstino particle with light matter particles? If SUSY is broken in field theory, the Goldstino is out there. What are its leading interactions with the visible sector? gluons? matter fermions? Higgs fields? Aspects of SUSY Breaking p. 7/?

Outline We present the tools with which we address these issues. Models that Break SUSY Broken Symmetries The Supercurrent Multiplet Connecting the UV and the IR Goldstinos and some Lagrangians Matter Fields Summary Aspects of SUSY Breaking p. 8/?

Basic Examples of SUSY Breaking Consider a single chiral field, Φ Φ = φ + θψ φ + θ 2 F with a free Lagrangian d 4 θ Φ 2 + d 2 θfφ + c.c. The vacuum energy is f 2 0 and therefore SUSY is broken. Since the theory is free the spectrum is supersymmetric, m φ = m ψφ = 0. Aspects of SUSY Breaking p. 9/?

Basic Examples of SUSY Breaking Now, think of: d 4 θ The scalar potential is ( Φ 2 1 ) M 2 Φ 4 + d 2 θfφ + c.c. V = 1 + 4 f 2 M 2 φ 2 +... There is nice vacuum at φ = 0 with vacuum energy f 2. The spectrum is m φ = 2 f /M and m ψφ = 0. The fermion ψ φ is massless because it is the Goldstino. Aspects of SUSY Breaking p. 10/?

More Examples of SUSY Breaking Renormalizable models of SUSY breaking. E.g. all the O Raifeartaigh-like models and their recent reincarnation. Calculable dynamical models. For example, 3-2 model (ADS), deformed quantum moduli space (ITIY), massive SQCD (ISS). Incalculable models with strong (but indirect) evidence of SUSY breaking, e.g. SU(5) and SO(10) (ADS). What are the general principles common to all these examples? Aspects of SUSY Breaking p. 11/?

Symmetry Breaking For a conserved charge Q we can associate a conserved current µ j µ = 0. Even if the symmetry is spontaneously broken, the operator equation µ j µ = 0 holds but Q = d 3 xj 0 diverges in the IR. In spite of this, [Q, O], where O is any local operator is well defined and local. Aspects of SUSY Breaking p. 12/?

Symmetry Breaking We conclude that even if a symmetry is spontaneously broken, All the operators sit in representations of the symmetry. Aspects of SUSY Breaking p. 13/?

The Supercurrent Multiplet N = 1 supersymmetric theories have a conserved supercurrent, µ S µα = 0. We can study the multiplet of the supercurrent, i.e. calculate {Q,S µα }, {Q,S µα } etc. In this way we find the conserved energy momentum tensor T µν, some R-current jµ R (which may not be conserved) and an operator which we will call x. They can all be written explicitly in a given microscopic theory. Aspects of SUSY Breaking p. 14/?

The Supercurrent Multiplet A nice way to package this multiplet was given by Ferrara and Zumino. They used a real multiplet J µ. Its components J µ = j µ + θ α ( S µα + 1 3 (σ µ σ ρ S ρ ) α ) + c.c. +(θσ ν θ) ( 2T νµ 2 3 η νµt 1 2 ǫ νµρσ ρ j σ )+ i 2 θ2 µ x i 2 θ 2 µ x. where stand for derivatives of the various fields. Aspects of SUSY Breaking p. 15/?

The Supercurrent Multiplet We would like to understand this mysterious complex scalar field x. Aspects of SUSY Breaking p. 16/?

The Supercurrent Multiplet The information encoded in the superfield is equivalent to the current algebra {Q β,s µα } = σ (2T ν α β µν + iη νµ j i ν j µ 14 ) ǫ νµρσ [ρ j σ] {Q β,s µα } = 2i(σ µν ) αβ ν x This holds even if SUSY is broken. We see that the mysterious x is a well defined operator in the theory. It can be obtained by varying the supercurrent. Aspects of SUSY Breaking p. 17/?

The Supercurrent Multiplet In the superfield language, the conservation equations follow from D α J α α = D α X where X is some chiral field. Solving this in components we find J α α and X is given by X = x + θψ + θ 2 F, with ψ σ µ S α α α µ, F = T µ µ + i µ j µ The operator x is therefore the lowest component of this chiral superfield. Aspects of SUSY Breaking p. 18/?

Relation to Goldstino We need to understand X better. The supercurrent S µα has two different Lorentz representations (1, 1/2), (0, 1/2). If supersymmetry is broken the (0, 1/2) component is the Goldstino. (And (1, 1/2) decouples.) Therefore, at very long distances, ψ becomes the Goldstino ψ σ µ α α S α µ G α. The chiral superfield X must flow at low energies to a chiral superfield which contains the Goldstino! Aspects of SUSY Breaking p. 19/?

Relation to Goldstino This superfield X is expected to be nonlinear at low energies. What could x flow to? We know, {Q,G} σ µ µ x. In addition, the F component of X is just the vacuum energy T µ µ. There is not much choice: x G 2. Aspects of SUSY Breaking p. 20/?

Relation to Goldstino SUSY fixes all the coefficients and we get: X X NL = G2 2F + 2θG + θ 2 F. Note the equation X 2 NL = 0 Aspects of SUSY Breaking p. 21/?

Relation to Goldstino So far we have seen that The Goldstino always sits in a chiral superfield (regardless of D-terms), which can be defined in the UV. This makes perfect sense even in incalculable examples. We can therefore calculate in all theories x(r 1 )x(r 2 )x(r 3 )... G 2 (r 1 )G 2 (r 2 )G 2 (r 3 )... X generalizes the SUSY-breaking spurion." Therefore, a chiral spurion superfield exists not only in weakly coupled examples! Aspects of SUSY Breaking p. 22/?

Lagrangians The low energy theory should be written with X NL, remembering the constraint XNL 2 = 0. We can write a free" theory d 4 θ X NL 2 + d 2 θfx NL + c.c. This gives the Akulov-Volkov theory! There is an accidental R-symmetry. Previous work from different perspectives: Akulov,Volkov,Rocek,Lindstrom,Wess,Samuel,Clark,Love... Corrections are controlled by scaling under which S(X NL ) = 1, S(dθ) = 1/2. So, all the A-V terms have S = 0. E.g. we can write d 4 θ X NL 2 which has S = 2. Aspects of SUSY Breaking p. 23/?

Lagrangians In components the meaning of this scaling is that the Goldstino is assigned dimension 1/2. The terms following from are of the form d 4 θ X NL 2 + d 2 θfx NL + c.c. f 2 + Ḡ σ G + Ḡ2 2 (G 2 ) +... and we see that they all indeed have S = 0. Can prove that d 4 θ X NL 2 is unique at scaling zero. The accidental R-symmetry can be broken at higher orders. Aspects of SUSY Breaking p. 24/?

Lagrangians Let us see how all these ideas work in the simplest nontrivial example. Aspects of SUSY Breaking p. 25/?

Example Reminder: L = d 4 θ ( ΦΦ 1 ) M 2( ΦΦ) 2 + d 2 θfφ + c.c.. φ = 0 is a good vacuum. The vacuum energy is f 2 and the spectrum is m 2 φ = f 2 /M 2, m ψφ = 0. ψ φ is the Goldstino. Our description at low energies should include only ψ φ as a physical field. We should integrate out φ. Aspects of SUSY Breaking p. 26/?

Example At zero-momentum the Lagrangian is L p=0 = 1 M 2(2φF φ ψ 2 φ)(2φ F φ ψ 2 φ). We integrate out φ and get φ = ψ2 φ 2F φ. This is independent of the high energy parameter M! We see that we need to use the non-linear superfield Φ X NL = ψ2 φ 2F φ + 2θψ φ + θ 2 F φ. Aspects of SUSY Breaking p. 27/?

Example We should use this field to write the low energy action. At leading order we just substitute it back to the action. The term ( ΦΦ) 2 vanishes due to XNL 2 the already familiar d 4 θ X NL 2. = 0. So we remain with In this model the microscopic operator X from DJ µ DX is given by X = fφ + 1 M 2Φ2 D2 Φ2 At low energies, due to Φ X NL, Φ 2 = 0. Thus, X fφ fx NL which is exactly the spurion" superfield. Aspects of SUSY Breaking p. 28/?

Connecting the IR and the UV The derivation and low energy results are independent of M. They are completely general. Aspects of SUSY Breaking p. 29/?

Matter Fields With similar technics and ideas we can solve the problem of including matter fields. In addition to XNL 2 = 0 we have Matter fermions (e.g. electrons) X NL Q NL = 0 Nonlinear Wess-Zumino Gauge XV = 0 Gauge fields (e.g. photon) X NL W αnl = 0 Higgs fields X NL H = chiral ( Goldstone bosons (e.g. axions) X NL A Ā ) = 0 From this we can calculate all the interesting couplings of matter fields to Goldstinos. Aspects of SUSY Breaking p. 30/?

Conclusions Supersymmetry and superspace are useful even when SUSY is broken. We can follow the supercurrent multiplet J α α and the associated X along the flow. X flows to the Goldstino multiplet and satisfies X 2 = 0 at long distances. We can efficiently find the interesting interactions of the Goldstino and other particles. The deep low-energy theory is universal. Aspects of SUSY Breaking p. 31/?

More Open Questions Understand the geometry behind X 2 = XQ NL = 0 and all their friends. Calculate phenomenological consequences of Goldstino couplings. Bounds on the R-axion. Understand local SUSY breaking and the corrections to the interaction vertices of global SUSY breaking. Find more exact results in theories that break SUSY. Aspects of SUSY Breaking p. 32/?
