Electro-Optical Distance Measurements in the Tokai Region, Central Japan (1977-1981) Fumiaki KIMATA Inuyama Crustal Movement Observatory, School of Science,. Nagoya University Tsuneo and YAMAUCHI Regional Center for Earthquake Prediction Observation, School of Science, Nagoya University (Received December 30, 1982) EDM (electro-optical distance measurements) in the Tokai region, central Japan has been repeated with the use of a Geodimeter 6BL at intervals of 1. 5-3 months since January 1977, in order to detect secular strain accumulation in the direction of northwest-southeast. Horizontal displacement of the triangulation point in this region during the late 100 years indicates significant contraction in the direction of northwest-southeast. The strain accumulation observed from January 1977 to December 1981 is consistent with the result of triangulation. It is found that an accuracy of about 0.3x10-6 in the EDM is attained if it is repeated frequently within a few hours around sunset. In this paper, we suggest a possiblity of the change in length associated with earthquakes.

Fig. 2. Accumulation of horizontal strains at the Sangane-Zaoh base-line, the Awagatake- Megami base-line and the Mukaiyama base-line network. The data obtained under the poor meteorological conditions are indicated by open circles, which are excluded from the least squares fits.

Fig. 4. Comparison of corrections for the temperature. Line segment for 1C indicates the variation in length for the change of 1C. The data obtained under the poor meteorological conditions are indicated by open circles. A; the temperature at the observation point is used. B; the mean temperature at the observation and reflection points is used. Fig. 5. Deviations of the data from the fitted lines in Fig. 2 are plotted against months of every year. Circles; Awagatake-Megami base-line. Squares; Sangane-Zaoh base-line. The data indicated by open circle and squares are discussed in the text.
