A Note on the Generic Solvability of the Navier-Stokes Equations. PAOLO SECCHI (*) 1. - Introduction. Let Q c R3 be a bounded domain in R3 with boundary 2D of class C2. Consider the Navier-Stokes equations with some T > 0. By a strong solution (u, of (1.1) solution with we mean a for some p with 2 ~ p oo. Let denote the closure in the norm of W9-~~~ (,~)$ of the set of smooth finite solenoidal vectors equal (*) Indirizzo dell A. : Dipartimento di Matematica Pura ed Applicata, Universita di Padova, via Belzoni 7, 35131 Padova, Italy.

to zero on Consider uo and f E Lp(QT). Then it is known that these assumptions on the data assure the existence of a local in time unique strong solution of (1.1) (see [4]). The existence of strong solutions for arbitrary T > 0 is an important open problem. Therefore it is interesting to know properties of the set R( uo) = E Lp(QT)/(l.l) has a unique strong solution (u, Vn) with data uo, f} for a fixed initial value It is not known whether or not R(uo) however it is interesting to = prove some density properties of this set, since this gives information about how many f do exist such that (1.1) is strongly solvable. In this concern H. Sohr and W. von Wahl [3] have proved the following interesting result: the set.r(uo) c EP(QT) is dense in the norm of L (O, T; for all s, q E (1, oo) with 4 2/8 -~- 31q (see also [2] for a weaker previous result). Their result is proved by a regularization procedure. for (1.1 ~ using an approximation of Yosida type and an estimate of the nonlinear term (u. V)u using the exponent p = 5/4 (see [3]). The aim of the present note is to prove the same result with a completely different method. We use an approximation method due to H. Beirao da Veiga [1] plus Sobolev imbedding and H61der inequality. Thi~ approach is particularly simple and so we think it is of interest, even if the result is not new. Denote the norm in and by the norm in T ; Lq(.~)a). Our result reads as follows THEOREM A. Let 2 ~ p oo and J~~~21 ~(S~). Then the set R(uo) c c is dense in T ; for all s, q E (1, oo) with 4 21s --~~ + 3 jq. There f ore, for every f E and every s > 0 there exists L1J(Qp) with as --~ 0 8 -~ 0 and such that has ac unique strong Polution (u,

2. - Proof of Theorem A. Following [1] we define the set of vectors where T > 0 arbitrary, and consider the linearized system f or v E ~1.. For convenience define From [4] (Theorem 4.2, p. 487) we have the following preliminary result : ac THEOREM 1. Let v E A, UO E 7 f E LfJ(QT). Then there exists unique solution (u, Vn) of proeblem (2.1) such that We quote now the result which gives us the approximating solutions we shall use later. It is proved in [1] (see Theorem 1.6, p. 329) as a consequence of a very interesting general approximation theorem. THEOREM 2 ([1]). Let uo E go(,~) and f E L2 (o, T; L2(Q)3) be given and let 1 q c ~ /4. T hen, in correspondence to every 8 > 0, there exist

veri f ying the system and for which Moreover the following estimates hold Estimates (2.6)1 and (2.6)2 hold also for vs and respectively. Let now uo, f and 8, q as in Theorem A. A combination of Theorems 1 and 2 gives us that the approximating solution given by Theorem 2 satisfies also (2.3). We are now in position to prove our result. We write (2.4), in the form Hence Vns) is a strong solution of (1.1) with external force f + 9~, Observe that, because 4 C 2/s -~- 3/q, we have s 2, q 3/2; it follows that Lp(Qp), 2 p oo, is densely contained in Z (0y T ; Hence the theorem is proved if we show that 91 E and - 0 as 8-0. Since E!1 and (us, Vn,) satisfies (2.3), using some Sobolev imbeddings it easily follows that ge E Lp(Qp). On the other hand, using the Hölder inequality gives

where ( we obtain be the solution of The estimates on Sl, ql yield 2 Sl S2, 2 ql q2 6. Using the H61der inequality gives where a, b must satisfy System (2.12) has a solution if and only if the determinant of the corresponding complete matrix is zero. This condition is satisfied since (2.10) holds. Hence we find a solution of (2.12) with a, b > 0. Since we have with 0 (2 /s2 ) 1 it f ollows

where 01 is a positive constant. Integrating in time at the s2..th power and the Young s inequality give where O2 is a positive constant; the right-hand side of (2.13) is bounded because of (2.6). Hence from (2.5), (2.6) (also for (2.8), (2.11), (2.13) we obtain where C3 is a positive constant independent of E. proved. The theorem is REFERENCES [1] H.
